For YEARS I've been telling myself, "Man, I wish I could make music." I've been writing songs since the age of six. I participated in music groups during middle school. Looking back now, it couldn't have been more obvious that making music was established on my path for a reason. Unfortunately, along came high school and with it so did the natural influx of teenage insecurities. For some reason, somewhere along the way, I just stopped believing that pursuing music was a realistic dream to have. I doubted my talents, and I swallowed my voice. I pushed away any belief that I had. I pushed my souls most passionate dream away. I let other people around me decide for me that I'd never make it as a musician. People who had never even heard my music or seen my lyrics. I ended up attending university for 2 years, flunked most of my classes, because deep down in my heart I knew that wasn't what I wanted to do. I decided this year that I'd take a break from school to really figure out what my true passions are, and what I have a good shot at achieving. Then along came COVID. Since the beginning of this pandemic, I've had no choice but to re-visit my passion for making music and writing songs. I am blown away by how natural this feels compared to forcing myself to sit through uni lectures and dreading final essays. I've spent hours upon hours teaching myself how to produce music, and have made a plethora of songs within only a couple of months. I definitely still have a long way to go, but it's a start. Of course there are some people around me who are trying to impose doubt and judgement, but I understand that it's coming from a place within themselves where they aren't able to be confident enough in their own dreams, so naturally they doubt others. There's also some really great people who I'm lucky enough to call my friends, who are excited for me and support me in my decision. I've decided to listen to the supporters. All in all, I'm very happy that I've chosen to revisit my passion. There's a part of me that does wish that I hadn't given up all those years ago, because I can't help to think that maybe I would've been closer to reaching my Magnum Opus by now. I know that way of thinking is useless. I'm here now, and from here I can only go up or go back. I'm not too keen on going back, so I'm choosing to believe that I'm going up. The reason I took the time to write this long message is because I want anybody reading this to know that the biggest dream that you have is the biggest one for a reason. It is who you are. Do not let the doubters fool you into becoming one of them. Do not let social media, or a soul sucking 9-5 job, or a negative parent/relative distract you from what your heart really wants. You deserve to live your life knowing that you've at least tried. I've only just started on this path, and though it is still very daunting, I've found that taking it one day at a time and working on my skills with patience has been extremely rewarding. For anyone who may need to hear this, I believe in you. I hope you choose to do what you love. I support you.

I kept falling and falling but my will to overcome this was stronger and stronger with each one of those falls and eventually I did it. Then, when my sister tried to do so, without knowing it, I tell her what is one of the most important life lessons. You can't achieve your goals if you keep fearing to fall. So you know what? I agree with this video for many important reasons. I’ll name one: Reaching to your Magnum Opus is not only important for you personally, but professionally. If you have a new take on an existing problem, not only will you learn new skills, but you’ll also lead your own unique experience, and probably in your own new field. It’s how you Shine! Also, there is a saying: “you want to make a billion bucks, you have to affect a billion people.” Meaning: the more people you want to help, the more valuable is your endeavor. So even if you fail the first n-number of times, those who believe in your idea will help you get back on your feet, either to get your project back up-n-running, or to offer you a job for your newly earned specialty. The world is increasingly getting connected so you’re never alone! That said, like in the video, you’ll have to make compromises, planning, risk calculation, and have SMART milestones to achieve your goal. You might never make a billion bucks, but you would certainly make yourself, and the people around you, happy 😉

The search for this sort of life purpose can also destroy someone. 99.99% of people will never be Einstein or Michaelangelo or Messi or Rowling. They will normal lives doing average things. We need to help people learn how to embrace that and be at peace with it. Not give them unrealistic dreams about leaving some great legacy behind. 7 billion+ people cannot all be famous and remembered after they are dead. The point of the magnum opus is that you put your entire being into doing the best thing you can envision. You don't need to be Elon Musk to have an impact that ripples outward. In my town there was a crazy guy with a ramshackle house and a billboard facing the road where he would write crazy stuff. Everyone wrote him off as nobody until the fire Marshall tried to shut him down... turns out, he had been quietly taking in homeless people in town for decades, but his house wasn't up to code for having "tenants." The whole town went to bat for "crazy old Joel" and the fire Marshall backed down, and Joelwent back to quietly helping those around him and making his community better for it. Your magnum opus doesn't need to be grand and visionary. It just needs to be bigger than you and objectively good.
@SerfinaHu Жыл бұрын
But I think Magnum Opus goes deeper than this, many unknown people will attain "the great work" and die without a legacy. If Magnum opus is an alchemical term for the process of working with the prima materia to create the philosopher's stone, it has to be something like turning lead into gold in an inner alchemical journey. For instance, being able to turn all the emotions of fear, frustration, sadness, trauma, separation, and almost everything we got inside into LOVE and union.

Let's be real for a moment: "Things people will pay you to do"- maybe you want to be a spiritual leader, or self sufficient, or (genuinely) independent. "Things you are good at"- Never try something you aren't sure you will succeed at, don't bother trying to diversify, challenge yourself, or bother trying new things "Things you enjoy doing"- It's a matter of mind really, for many people it's the concept of HAVING TO work which makes it not fun to begin with, it's more attitude than anything else, also the pressure of reaching your own best can kill the joy in something you used to enjoy when you're being judged based on how you perform.... I really enjoy most of the videos of this channel, but I feel like it is hypocritical at times or just superficial/generalizing. Assuming everyone has the potential to be the next Einstein is naive, and it makes people lie to the themselves. I know it sounds pessimistic, but you can not blindly follow success, just because the advise successful people give worked for them, there's 20 for whom it didn't. How about contempt? Making the best of your circumstances? Allowing people to be "average"? Don't get me wrong, if you want to reach for the stars, reach, but don't expect ever to want lots of money/fame/recognition/friends/achievements etc. You keep quoting buddha, well guess what, a buddhist monk has none of those things and maybe he is happier than any "succesful" person out there. Better than always working to reach your "magnum opus" and never FEEL it, or worse: reaching it, KNOWING it and realizing you reached your peak, just to fall into depression later, which happens too often, greatness is perceived, but the person who reaches it destroyed themselves in the process. It's ok to be contempt with the simple things in life.
@TheTDSingh5 жыл бұрын
Great comment. But I think this video content is not hypocritical but rather a partial picture of the entire argument. You nicely provide the other part. I don't think the video is telling people to become the next Einstein, that's just an example of Magnum Opus. But there's a danger that you might take it that way which is a problem. I guess you can treat it in that Venn diagram. For eg. You might find what you're good at intersecting with what you love doing, but not with something you get paid for. And maybe that's the best you can do. A possible scenario and a clear case of your argument. Not finding this third intersection can lead to grief and frustration. Nevertheless, knowing this clearly helps. I think that's why this video presents the optimistic view point and your argument completes the other side. Both are important to keep in mind, IMHO. Cheers!

to be fair, chances are really high that whatever your "natural" talents, gifts and skills are, they pertain to your purpose for being here. musically gifted people should be creating music, as any inherent abilities should be utilized in this lifetime. to not use them would be disrespectful of your very purpose. you don't have to be einstein to be special. some people paint, some bake, some teach, some build. living a life of purpose doesn't mean living a life of fame and fortune.... it means joyously using your unique talents and gifts in a way that benefits the greater whole. purpose is what your soul came here to do.

I have the desire to pursue a career in advancing the longevity of the brain. Problem is, it’s really hard. Been studying for the GRE and I can’t get a high enough score for grad school. Not to mention grad school takes up 100% of your time, no friends or relaxation, and I am naturally lazy. After finishing, theres a very small chance I will get the job I want, for marginally higher pay than my current job, which I love (blackjack dealer). The job I would be getting would be very stressful. On top of that, student loans, and years of low to no pay.

But what to do if you're not particularly good at anything? I'm 45 and am a half way decent mountain biker but I highly doubt I can go pro and get paid to ride my bike all day.

"This simple exercise can help you focus your energy and home in on your magnum opus journey. Write down things you love to do things you're good at and *things people will pay you to do* the intersection of these three categories is your sweet spot." This is a gross and uncredited oversimplification of the Japanese philosophy of ikigai and in this case is flawed because it includes a condition in which we have no power over: capitalism. If Vincent van Gogh followed After Skool's advice we would've have some of the world's most beloved works of art because he was a commercial failure during his life. If Friedrich Nietzsche had followed After Skool's advice we would've have some of the world's most important writings about existentialism because his writings were a commercial failure during his life. The same can be said about Søren Kierkegaard who was also a commercial failure during his life but his writings today have helped billions define their lives. Money be damned. If you can create something that you see as your magnum opus then create it regardless if it is profitable or not. In this new world where the novels we write, the paintings we paint and the photographic essays we capture can be shared with the world for now and all of eternity with a single click of a mouse button then I say create and forget about making profit. In a hundred years any thought of monetary value will be forgotten but a part of you will still live on. A magnum opus isn't about what we are today but how we want others to remember us long after we are gone from this world.

Give it more than a year. Look. Listen. Be prepared for your magnum opus to turn out better than you imagined!

Yeah, a magnum opus is a life's achievement, not a year's commitment. By that standard, everyone who graduated high school may as well pat themselves on the back for a life well lived.

Doubt is what save us from the bad ideas. Don't blame it. A balance is necessary between doubt and action. And Meteora is the greatest album of Linkin Park.

Its not that people doubt themselves, we are all raised with doubt that you cannot make it without a job or some institutional system. The people you all pointed out did not have institutional jobs or lifestyles. If you are raised to be free of these systems you are more likely to become what you want instead of what everyone else wants.

Wow! Amazing video! I was astonished to see all of the cynics and doubters in the comments. If you’re focused on statistics that’s why you aren’t going to obtain anything significant in life and also why your great grandchildren won’t remember your name. You’re only kidding yourself thinking that there isn’t enough resources on the planet for everyone to be very successful. There is a very large abundance of resources on the planet and if there isn’t enough build a space ship. Figure it out, don’t just make excuses because of what some statistics say. Whoever blames statistics for why they didn’t create a legacy is 100% a cynic that doesn’t even believe in themselves. Every person on the planet could live an amazing prosperous life. Most people would rather have their boss control their lives and give them a paycheck every 2 weeks so that they can make it through life extremely lazy. Just because you lack a dream and have no belief in yourself doesn’t mean you shouldn’t encourage other people and their dreams. Quit bringing up some bologna success statistic you pulled up off of google. You choose to succeed, it’s by choice. The only people that let statistics determine their future are the ones that lose.

Chance Rhymes Life is pretty complicated. I wouldn’t say anyone can achieve their hopes & dreams. There is a limited amount of time in everyone’s life & you won’t get what you want most likely. But yeah, some people I saw had potential but used some questionable reasons to why they won’t follow a talent I saw in them. But tbh, I’ve seen many talentless people & I wouldn’t tell them what you said just now cause it won’t work. Life is complex & cannot be simplified as simply them not trying hard enough. If you try too hard from experience, you also become discouraged & miserable.
