I feel like the difference between Magnus and Hikaru in online chess is that Hikaru likes to blitz out moves and more often than not, comments on how he messed up the opening or somehow reached a good/bad position, and he just plays with what he has. Meanwhile Magnus is actively trying to *reach* a certain position in which he believes he is better, and begins to play a winning endgame from there which although takes more time, results in more wins than losses.
