Thank you for these videos. Watched your videos for many years, and some of them repeatedly. You make chess interesting in an AlfaZero way, no other way to describe it. Side note: You're actually the reason I got into chess, because of your description of the game. And watching your standard games made me a decent player of the game. strange how u r "only" an NM - ur ability to explain stuff is clearly better than that of most of the IMs/GMs here on youtube their way of explaining is more robotic/theory heavy (and they possibly have a deeper understanding of the oppositions and can calculate deeper...tho us viewers dont rly notice it cuz they usually dont put that well into words) u r better at explaining the smaller nuances/the logic/intentions behind ur moves on an idea-based level rather than "LUL THAT'S THEORY"-level as most (even) higher ranked players strangely tend to do it

4:35 i'm curious about the decision to make the exchange with 10... Bxg2 here (and move 9; i was indeed tempted by Nc6 haha). i would have thought black's bishop is more valuable here because it's pointing near the enemy king, but i assume there's something i'm missing. is it simply because of the central squares that white's bishop is controlling? does black have any hope of using his bishop as a threat, or does white's bishop effectively shut that down? (or is the bishop not a threat in the first place?)
@zexisak40853 жыл бұрын
Generally the g2 bishop is considered better than the b7 bishop is because it's protected by the king, is the protector of the king, and also defends the light squares of h3 and f3 nicely.
@zexisak40853 жыл бұрын
Also tactics often favor the g2 bishop when it's defended over the b7 bishop which is undefended. See this line in the Hedgehog where white wins material because of the dynamic between the defended g2 bishop and the undefended b7 bishop. 1. c4 c5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nc3 e6 4. g3 b6 5. Bg2 Bb7 6. O-O Be7 7. Re1 d6 8. e4 Nbd7 9. d4 cxd4 10. Nxd4 O-O 11. e5 dxe5 (11... Bxg2 12. exf6) 12. Bxb7 exd4 13. Bxa8.

Possibly Carlsen's greatest strength is his versatility and ability to play any position and play it exceptionally well. Not too long ago he was experimenting with the Grunfeld (in both the FIDE World Cup and Norway Chess), in the latter he was 'tricked' by Rapport into a King's Indian a seemingly lesser opening than the Grunfeld and he defended it effortlessly as if he'd been playing it his whole life. I don't think there's an opening he hasn't played.
@MrSupernova1113 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Magnus is a great technician but his general chess knowledge is off the charts. I believe this is the reason he's been #1 for many years. If his calculation ability falters he can always lean on his immense knowledge of positions to salvage many games.
@AeonQuasar3 жыл бұрын
@@MrSupernova111 he often replies he can pull the emergency break. He can be - 2 behind and still pull off draws by mining out maximum value of his pieces.

You have to see the position after 16...Nc7 with the idea of ...f5 before 13...Ne8 is an acceptable candidate. When you asked "what does Black play here?" I thought of ...Ne8, but threw it out because I didn't see a follow up for it.

I wonder if d5 was a viable option on move 14 winning the knight... what am I missing?
@lukecastellan7213 жыл бұрын
it doesn't win the knight, because after 14. b3 d5 cxd5 exd5, there's Qf5 threatening mate, after g3 Qh3 threatens mate again, and after h5 there's Ne6, forking the queen and rook, and white is winning. Complex position, for sure, but you don't get anything out of playing d5. Plus, the d pawn is pinned, so it wouldn't threaten the knight in the first place.

@jessejordache1869 Жыл бұрын
There's a lot of intuition you can get from it by studying characteristic openings that lead to similar positions, because it can arise from both the Sicilian Scheveningen and ESPECIALLY the Sicilian Taimanov. The Taimanov is almost perfect but it has you playing an early ...Nc6, which is, as in this game, often better left to a later decision. Plus there are different hedgehogs: there are hedgehogs with no fianchettoes, double-fianchettoes, and everything in between. The point is to learn to keep your position sound and to slowly unwind yourself, and this is fundamentally a Sicilian structure. I'm personally not a fan of double fianchettoing... basically ever (wait, we're playing for a bind on the black AND white squares? Seriously what is the idea here?) but there are plenty of players stronger than me who like positions like that. Hoping that points a way to for you to find good positions to study.

I'm a hedgehog player. This Ra7 manœuvre is not new. I wouldn't say it's mainstream, but it's certainly not rare. In fact, I have played this myself more than once to protect the Bishop on b7. The passivity of the a7 rock with a bishop on b7 is not a problem, you can always come back to a8 when the tactical problems of the unprotected Bishop on b7 (e4-e5 and on Bxg2, exf6! and 2 black minor pieces are en prise) are gone. There is also the move Ba8 and the rook can move along the 7th rank as Carlsen did. For sure without light squares bishopscthis Ra7 move makes even more sense. The g5 move is not new in the Hedgehog either. It's quite common once queens are exchanged, something black should generally avoid. However with queens on the board, it's a rarity. Really impressive Carlsen certainly has cojones for the reasons you mentioned.🤣 I enjoyed the game and your comments very much. Thank you!

The correct phrase when the queen or another piece doesn't have a good square to go to, is the board "doesn't have a square to spare".
