I think he's nailed it. Not just the quality of the videos, but the rate at which he uploads, and the timing of the uploads. I suspect this channel will grow exponentially when the stars align. I'm a big fan of Viktor Kortjnoj. For decades he was a top level player. His trick was, he told, was to play unexpected moves. Not great moves, but moves not analyzed endlessly by his opponents. "I'm forcing them to think for themselves". It looks like Magnus does the same. Brings the match into unknown territory. No memory usable.

Magnus is the GOAT, I couldn’t play 99% of the moves even if I had unlimited time and was able to use assorted chess engines. Magnus just does it sublimely in less than 3 minutes. We are lucky to watch him at his best. I’m glad he handed in his fide title, hopefully they will change the rules to allow the best to reign and the rest to try and beat him in a format agreeable to him in conjunction with top 20 discourse.

There's been an over-reliance in recent decades on engine evaluation, and trying to figure what is the objectively best move in any given situation, as if we were playing against God. But we're not playing against God. And certain players like Magnus have now harnessed the power of sub-optimal (yet also very good) moves against human competition. Sometimes, weirdly and paradoxically, the sub-optimal move is our best weapon. Alpha Zero has given Magnus (and others) permission to let their freak flag fly. Love it.

The thing about Magnus is that I fully believe that he has studies and knows as much theory as it is possible about these sorts of openings. One of his greatest strengths is his capacity to remember things and so he abuses the fact that other players, even great players, have enough difficulty keeping main openings in their heads, let alone esoteric ones like these. I seem to remember reading somewhere that at one point it was a legal move to push both outside pawns two squares forward if it was your first move. My memory may be making that up, but can you imagine? Magnus armed with the double plow? 😂

i think the theory of his non opening theory moves is to basically give his opponent the first move as black which would never have a reason to be prepared before hand- forcing play over the board over memorization of prepared openings

Magnus didn't invent 1. a4. It's been around for some time and is called, among other names, "The Meadow Hay". I've played it back in the 70s after I saw a game published in the US Chess Life magazine played by IM Eugene Meyer.

Some of us old timers still call it the queen rook pawn. Stockfish has opened some games by pushing a rook pawn, lifting the rook and sacrificing the exchange for the opposite bishop! Perhaps Magnus is trying to learn from this nonsense.
