The ease with which Magnus Carlsen dismantles Super GM Vincent Keymer in this game from the 2022 Julius Baer Generation Cup, calls into question his claim to be a member of the human race . Enjoy this virtually flawless performance!

Where Magnus really shines is his ability to understand the winning concept in any position, and simplifying seemingly complex positions.

Magnus is obviously outstanding, but we should keep in mind that this is the semifinals game 4 and the 17 years old Keymer is forced to win, after 2 draws in the first 2 games and a 92 moves (!!) 3rd game where the Norwegian was finally able to win a virtually drawn very interesting battle. Kudos to the young Keymer too.

Magnus is clearly one of the top 3 chess PLAYERS of all time. He is the best and most consistent chess COMPETITOR of all time. He’s not saddled with any Fischer or Kasparov brand of drama. His mastery and execution of end game genius is evidence of his multi-layered competitive mastery. He’s a true assassin.

@@robertehrenworth3310 Thank you. However, I was quite clear in differentiating between PLAYERS and COMPETITORS. Kasparov is arguably the greatest PLAYER of all time and in the top three as a COMPETITOR. My opinion is that Magnus is the greatest COMPETITOR of all time. Of note, he doesn't have to resort to antics off the board to gain advantage. He may show up to the board at the last minute from time to time but this pales in comparison to the antics used by Fischer and to some extent Kasparov. My argument for Magnus's competitive greatness is how he changed the nature of competition regarding endgames and draws. Prior to Magnus, players would evaluate a position as drawn with best play and shake hands. Magnus saw meat on the bone and forced his competitor to keep working, more often than not to their demise. Now most players follow his example. Of course there are other examples of his unparalleled competitive dominance but that should suffice to illustrate my point.

Sometimes chess works like Counterstrike. You threaten to attack somewhere and then you benefit in other places when they try to defend (rotating in counterstrike) . The pawns is a bit like the utility, taking away squares (molotovs), blocking (smoke). The bishops are the AWP (a sniper rifle) holding angles. The kings are the bombsites, surround a king and you have limited time or moves to save the it. Taking space on a map is just as crucial as taking space in chess and Carlsen does that so well with his pawn moves.

Beautiful game. Kind of a mixture of a Kasparov and Karpov performances at once. Kasparov's for the crushing and agressive opening, and Karpov's because of the flawless and classical conversion of the advantage: pilling up pieces against the adversary King, but invading the position over the other side of the board, without any chance of defense.

I don’t know squat about chess, or at least very little. But, my thought is don’t be too quick to change your format, despite some complaints about the many “what ifs”. If someone just wants to see the actual match, then one can go watch it. For the average player, I’m guessing it’s more interesting to pause and take a look at potential moves and their likely consequences (although perhaps more slowly than you presented). Regardless, a nice presentation. Good job.

With regard to the Fischer vs. Carlsen debate, I believe it is not really comparing like with like insofar as the chess world has changed so much with the advent of so many online resources. When Fischer was preparing for his WC encounter with Spassky in Iceland, he employed London-based New Zealand IM Bob Wade to assemble all of Spassky's games. Bob has a fmously large chess library. Most of us reading this could now do assemble Spassky's games in a matter of minutes with the internet. Carlsen can use engines for pre- and post-match preparation and analysis. Fischer had to rely on "seconds", one or two grandmasters whom he trusted. It was such a different world then. On the whole I suspect Carlsen was/is the more accurate player but Fischer's imagination was just out of this world (which is not to say that Carlsen is unimaginative by any means). BTW, I went to Bob Wade's celebrated chess classes at Morley College and Working Man's College in London in the 70s and can therefore claim two degrees of separation from Bobby!

What has Magnus to do until people will finally admit he is better than Fisher? Fisher was absolutely great but he basically disintegrated at the height of his career. He got world champion and didn't defend it. Now there are reasons for that and we'll never know what was legit and what was paranoia, however, he has always been erratic and liked to cause drama. I consider Magnus the goat not only because of his achievements and engine like precision, it's also because he is so relentless and consistent. It doesn't matter how long the match goes, what the expectation is, how much he is pressured, what the media says, what happens in private life or whatever - he just delivers like a robot but at the same time is so relaxed and charming that he doesn't feel like a robot. Fischer however, like Tal, had swinging moods, ups and downs and was VERY dependant on what's going on around him. He just never had the mental power to keep the title of world champion and defend it for a decade. Also, watch interviews of the late Fischer where he explains why he invented Fischer Random: He would absolutely HATE the way chess is played now. But if you claim the title of GREATEST OF ALL TIME you just need the mental capacity and willingness to go through this. And he never claimed it himself for that record - when interviewers pressed him about this matter and asked if, for example, Morphy could beat him, he never gave a direct answer and always insisted that times are so different and hard to compare.

I don't understand this logic, his opponents are playing in an engine era as well, why would that be more easy? The only advantage I can see is that you can play sanctioned games online now which ultimately means you can do more serious games against more different opponents because you have to travel less.

@@Puschit1 What he means is that with the development of a sport/game every next generation becomes better on average. And that is absolutely true since now in the computer era you can alway find an opponent better than you to play against. If you do not understand why a move is goood or bad you can simply ask the computer and he will show you. Not even to mention that there are always gms online in various sites that you can play againat 24/7. In the past people had tontravel for days to have just one good game.

@delanmorstik7619 Жыл бұрын
@@Puschit1 Honestly I have no idea what your point is. The whole current generation is better than previous. Every opponent magnus has is better than every opponent previous number 1 had and so magnus has a better chance to grow. You can never compare him against fisher because they had different environment of competition. People want to define "best ever" but there is only "best now", "best yesterday", "best 1800". The current environment is better for growing in chess so number one today can take larger lead than before. If the function of growth is not perfectly linear then magnus has a chance to become much more better than his competion than previous people had. But then how can you compare how much better someone is than someone else? You cannot. As you said elo is not perfect valuation. If we had a person that could always beat magnus this would not mean that he has higher elo. Some people just play better against some people.
@Puschit1
@Puschit1 Жыл бұрын
@@delanmorstik7619 Well, that's exactly my point, you cannot really compare but the original poster here implies you can. He says Magnus had it easier to climb in Elo which just isn't true in an environment that is much tougher. Magnus has better tools to get better, yes, but that's not what sm Sm said, hence my reply.
