Wow, this is a revolution in the history of chess... Being able to watch the World Champion and leading chess player over the last 10 years, sit in a comfortable environment and play and comment on both his own and others' games, is a huge source for insight. Thank you so much for sharing this Jon Ludvig, I think this video will live a long life on YT.

Im glad to see this happening in other disciplines now , streaming is a great thing and still is not really well understood by a large portion of the population. Check out twitch.tv if you get the chance. Its a streaming platform mainly for videogames but there are all sort of streams 24/7 including chess streams.

I agree. It seems to me that he makes a conscious effort to differentiate himself for former WC's. From my understanding it is quite unique that he is such an active tournament player, in all time controls. And not to mention his engagement with the public in different ways. You could argue he is a proper 21-century WCC.

Warhammer Workshop It’s almost completely a trained memory. He wasn’t born like that.
@TheClassicWorld6 жыл бұрын
I think he was, I read that he memorised all the flags of the world when he was 5? In any case, it's impossible for him not to have been born like that. The only way to be the best Chess player is to be born with a naturally strong memory above most humans. You need the ability. You don't learn that kind of memory. Remember, Magnus was great at Chess by the age of like 8. That's natural talent. No 8-year-old trains for anything. To quote Bobby Fischer, with hard work you can be good, but you'll never be great.
@sylendraws12496 жыл бұрын
Warhammer Workshop Magnus wasn't that good at the age of 8 like lower than 1k rating. I think the age where he started to get really good is maybe 10.
@TheClassicWorld6 жыл бұрын
I think his rating was more 1500 when he was 8, not under 1000. But, whatever, 1k, 1.5k, 10, 8, all the same. I was making a point, not extreme accuracy. (Plus, I've not studied Magnus much, I have other things to do in life, so, I don't know everything.)

The crazy part is that Magnus is playing against GM's and he calculates seriously only 1 or 2 times in a game. Most of his moves are intuitive yet so effective.

Benefits of being a prodigy.
@Ayush-cy7bz6 жыл бұрын
Michael Reed There are many prodigies but only one MC. The ease with which he plays is simply mind boggling. Most of the time, he yawningly makes his moves, even against super GM's like that at online chess.com tournaments against the likes of Hikaru and so on. That is way more than prodigy!
@TheClassicWorld6 жыл бұрын
Well, he 'simply' plays the best moves which are logical and forced from such standpoint, therefore, it's easy... the hard part is knowing the best moves. Man, life is tough. Play like a computer! I get some of the best/computer moves, but, getting every right move every game is what makes Magnus great.
@gtrmusic696 жыл бұрын

To hear Magnus think out loud is really fantastic. His statements are very objective and clear, offering tremendous insight into his thinking process. As many people have already mentioned, he calculates much less than I thought, but his intuitive selection of moves is really amazing to witness. He seems to telescope into the critical lines without being distracted by details that he has probably already ruled out as unimportant or unnecessary to calculate. Thank you so much for streaming your play. I hope that there is more in the future.
@TheClassicWorld6 жыл бұрын
Most top players do this and I assume he calculates a lot more when he's playing the best players in the world in real games. But, yeah, nowadays it's just a matter of playing millions of games and remembering the computer moves. Fischer in the 1970s without computers or much help, now that's impressive!
@Svilly126 жыл бұрын
What Magnus does is just as impressive as what Fischer did. Because everyone who Magnus plays has the same resources he does, just like everyone who Fischer played had the same resources he did. Therefor, being the best is still super fucking impressive. You should try some critical thinking, Warhammer. Then you won't come across as looking so stupid in the future.

Not as impressive, but still very impressive. Remember, the Russians had many more resources than Fischer. He was great without many resources compared to the other players. And he was 150 points above second, and was the first super-GM. I think it was said that in 1972 he was much better than every other player in the world and he is one of the only people to have had a perfect win tournament and was the youngest grandmaster in the world for a long time, too. And the list goes on. I may say the same about as you, of course, since Bobby dominated more than Magnus dominates today. Bobby crushed all the Russians, some of which were the best players ever. Also, Fischer taught himself and trained himself mostly, along with some clubs and such, but he had nothing like Magnus and the Russians, and so forth. Also, Bobby was a better Chess player than Magnus, it seems. I mean, Bobby is one of the greatest Chess players that ever lived and was a serious genius, and would most likely beat Magnus if Magnus lived in the 1970s.
@kasparov96 жыл бұрын
" Also, Bobby was a better Chess player than Magnus, it seems. I mean, Bobby is one of the greatest Chess players that ever lived and was a serious genius, and would most likely beat Magnus if Magnus lived in the 1970s." How is he a better chess player? Carlsen has won close to 35 super tournaments already, won 3 world championships. Fischer was great for 1 Cycle. So please explain how Fischer 1 year peak is better than what Carlsen has done overall? And remember Carlsen is only 27. Look at Calrsen's competition and compare that to what Fischer was up against in 70-72. Fischer was 125 points, maximum above Spassky. A player Karpov trounced 4-1 in the 1974 candidates. Fischer really should have played Karpov, but chose to leave the sport. Nothing impressive about that. His awesome run in 70-72 is impressive, but very short lived. Fischer didn't defend his title and didn't play a single game as champ. By the time Carlsen is finished, there is no way in the world you will be able to say Fischer was better and keep a straight face. No 2 years performance on earth can beat say 20 years of Kasparov or even where Carlsen ends up. Fischer had the highest peak for a very short time, wasn't tested after that from challengers, that to me ruins his legacy. Why the constant comparison with Fischer anyway? It's like his fans are terrified that the world will forget about Fischer when a great player comes along like Carlsen, so they keep bringing up his results from 50 years ago just in case you forgot how wonderful he was. But conveniently skip Kasparov who dominated for 20 years, had 17 2820+ tournament performances compared to Fischer's 2 according to chessmetrics.

I know if the word starts with a vowel it's supposed to be "an" not "a" BUT.... as a native english speaker.... "an euphemism" sounds really wrong to me so it might be an exception to the rule... English is like that which makes it hard to learn grammatically. Read enough English and watch enough movies and you'll eventually learn to "hear" what sounds right instead of going based on grammar.... I find this to be true for most languages.... The downside is hear a language spoken incorrectly long enough.... the damage done might be permanent... best of luck! Btw I looked it up... correct spelling is "a euphemism" but I didn't "have" to look it up as I said... it sounded wrong

I'm just wondering if there is such a person who is a chess prodigy, cool as Kianu Reeves, devil-may-care as James Bond and well spoken as David Attenborough. It seems that the expectations of celebreties for many people is totally unrealistic. I have seen some horrificly critical comments about players like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura. zdechlaksensei well, the adverb 'literally' has two different senses, as evidenced by its licensing in two different positions in the structure of the clause. As someone who's just started learning chess, it's relieving to see how much frustration and ups and downs go on here. As opposed to a face to face matches where the players just sit and play quietly and make faces.

@54:44 - I was thinking about f5 for Black, threatening f4 . f5, Bh4, Nf6 seems like an interesting approach for Black as d6 will fall soon. f5, Bh4, Nf6, Rb7, Black has Rd7 and I believe is winning. The problem is that Bh4 is by no means forced, White can just play Be5 after Black gave up the e5 square with his pawn move.

I like his passive-aggressive criticism (his spaghetti isn't hot enough) disguised as politeness at 01:02:53: "You don't have a microwave, do you? You do?" -- "I can heat it for you" -- "No, that's okay." Must be a Norwegian thing.
@TheSteinbitt5 жыл бұрын
Why would it be criticism? He just wanted his spaghetti warmer, its not passive agressive.

From the ratings, it would appear that chess.com Elo trades at a bit of a discount to FIDE Elo (i.e. FIDE ratings will tend to be lower than chess.com ratings for a given player).

The entire time I've been aware of magnus, and have been studying chess and him, I've always noticed that something about his head looked weird. Today, I have finally figured out what it is. He has the head of a midget, but the body of a normal person. I am quit satisfied with my discovery, it's been bothering me for some time

And people hate on globalism. This is what a globalized world brings us. Watching one of the greatest chess players of all time stream his games to the world and commentate on it. This is like watching Bobby Fischer do this. Amazing

Crazy how many of his own obscure games he remembers so clearly.
