People are misunderstanding Carlsen's rating of Anand's influence. Influence doesnt just mean inspiring a country to the game, but he took into account Anand's contribution towards the game. Chess evolved with theories put forward by many grandmasters, like Kasparov and Bobby Fischer, Anand didnt necessarily come up with any, but he uses the existing theories to build his game. Carlsen considered that and his countries influence and hence he gets an 8 which is pretty fair.

So did Magnus's contemporaries. It is how someone stands apart from his contemporaries that usually sets a person apart. Vishy did that when he became the world champion, but Magnus's domination is greatest in history, alongside the likes of Fisher, Kasparov and Morphy, perhaps even better.

Pretty sure a non-chess country like Norway would be massively influenced by Magnus as well. Please understand acknowledging Magnus doesn't in any shape or form cast any shadow on Vishy's achievements. Vishy may have influenced the most number of people with his chess, considering India has a few billion people. But in terms of chess - strength and dominance, Magnus, Kasparov and Fisher had really set themselves apart as all time greats. Morphy might be arguable but at that time, no one played serious chess.

I would say Carlsen has an influence of 7. He is extraordinarily good and was world champion for a while, but he still didn't have much influence due to the fact that he is in a more modern time and changing Chess very largely is quite difficult.
