I am an American male who has never once played a competitive game of chess in my life but I truly hope Magnus Carlsen realizes that he has become a shining light for a sport that hardly gets recognized in the WestWorld. I love his pure genius, his aptitude for learning and most importantly his ability to have fun when the time calls for it. (A very interesting and difficult to meet try - Black must play accurately or lose quickly) 4...Nd6 - A clumsy looking defense as it blocks in black's pieces but necessary to the position in hopes of gaining equality. Tricky to play against as black but in theory black should get equality in the line.

And I wouldn’t even say that GM Howell is “far below” Magnus’ level. I mean, his peak rating was over 2700, which is Super GM level. If any of us is far below Magnus, it is definitely me. I mean, Carlsen has me by about 450 points, so that’s a pretty massive margin. David Howell is fairly comparable. And both of them would blow me off the board.

I think it's important to note that while David is a highly accomplished grandmaster, he's still rated something like 300-500 points behind Magnus. That means that Magnus is somewhere between 50x to 1000x more likely to win. So, while their relative elos aren't that far apart, their respective odds of winning are.
