They wanted to share the first prize. The regulations said that they would tiebreak with blitz game matches (armaggedon wasn't on the regulations), so they said that they could play short draws forever if FIDE wouldn't agree to make them joint champions.

They did play tiebreak games after the first scheduled 4 games, and it could continue indefinitely if each game was a draw. Each match should have been closed with an Armageddon game IMHO, but instead each match could have been a complete disaster since there was nothing to force the players to fight for a win. They could have continued each of the 4 original matches with endless draws by 3-time repetition. In that case the regulations had no solution. I suppose FIDE would have had to step in, perhaps with a mandatory Armageddon game, but this was a flawed match format. Magnus and Nepo just stepped in to suggest sharing the title, but that would only be possible in the final, while they would have had to find another solution for other matches. A potential disaster for all participants. Kasparov-Karpov match had to be cancelled after 48 games and another match scheduled at the score 5-3 for Karpov.

f6 Nf3 and black has a discovered check which is hard to calculate with no time. It's objectively the best move but you need to be 100% sure you don't miss a thing. I guess Nepo had almost no time at this point
