Even watching this video and analysis, I have no idea what is going on still lol. The attack is too complex, same as the defense. It's one of those games that you need to play yourself and think hard about every single move to understand all the subtleties. Just a few seconds on each move even if explained, after the next move or two is played, you have already forgotten what the countless subtleties are already, both tactical AND positional, since it's usually one or the other but this game seems to be everything all at once. Too many tactical pawn breaks, piece sacrifices, AND long term positional considerations to think about at EVERY move. I feel sorry for Magnus opponent, because it seemed like he had magnus on the ropes for the whole game, just a slight inaccuracy and he would have won in awesome sacrificial style. Burn Magnus made it difficult for him, and he even almost turned it around. I'm guessing time trouble was a factor for white also, since he had too many pawn breaks and piece sacs to consider, while Magnus "just" had to find only moves after white decided which attacking move to go for. But it's Magnus, so we all know he will find them lol. Interesting game, but disappointing finish. Magnus normally plays until then end, especially vs 300 point lower rated player. I can only assume that Magnus thought his position was worse, and thus he took the draw since that was the wise thing to do. Not sure why white did, maybe he also had had enough and was scared that he could end up losing to Magnus supreme endgame skills. Or maybe time trouble. Who knows. Weird game since like I said Magnus normally plays until the end unless it's a clearly drawn game like rook/pawn endgame or closed pawn position or symmetrical pawn+piece endgame.

7:20 Why would you trap a bishop that can be taken straight away (Rxg4)?
@jenakumoyeri3202 Жыл бұрын
Because the rook didn't have to move as it is more powerful sitting there. Moving a rook so advanced into enemy territory to capture the bishop on g4 is unnecessary if the bishop can be captured by the pawns. The idea is to maintain the pressure and give your opponent no breathing space Chess is really deep.

People have been jokingly comparing Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik, but I have a serious comparison -- Kramnik was never quite as good as his record; it was stratospheric because he was the best fish-fryer, and he used the Sicilian against obviously weaker opponents. This is the second game I've seen Carlsen attempt to do the same, but he uncoils so... slowly... that he hands the initiative to his opponents, and goes down to players he has over 200 points on as a result.
