Mr. Hansen Excellent video, thank you very much. In particular, thank you for bringing to my attention the channel Chess fan MWP. I recall that after Magnus withdrew from the Sinquefield Cup, you pointed out that the Chessbrahs were aware that Hans Niemann is a cheat. As you suspected, there is indeed an old black-and-white photograph depicting the artist and chess master Marcel Duchamp sitting at a chessboard, opposite a barenaked lady. It seems to me that the explanation for Carlsen's behaviour is really quite simple. This certainly does not apply to you, good sir, but those speculating that Carlsen is worried about cheating (or whatever else) may be addressing the wrong issue. Allow me to explain: If I'm correct, it has to do, particularly, with that cruel mistress Caissa, and the... intimate... relationship which Magnus seems to have with her. As background, here's a true story about a cheating incident. In the mid-nineties, in northeast England, I played a league game in which my opponent cheated quite blatantly (not with an engine, merely by retracting a blunder, after having recorded the move and pressed the clock). Notwithstanding his notoriety (and, more especially, his culpability) after a protracted process not only was he exonerated, but *my club* was sanctioned. Here's the thing about that: losing to a cheat spooks you. The following season, I had to play him again. Which was unfortunate, because--psychologically--I had already lost that game, even before I sat down to play it. This, I submit, is what happened to Magnus, on account of his being compelled to play a known--indeed self-confessed--cheat, by the name of Hans Niemann. In effect, psychologically, Magnus had lost to Hans *before sitting down to play him* In other words, the self-confessed cheat Hans Niemann is Magnus Carlsen's _bête noire_ This explains why Magnus Tweeted the clip of Jose Mourinho. Magnus can't tell the truth that he lost because he was spooked. If he did, he'd be in all kinds of trouble. He can do without that. But that's why he lost. And it's why he withdrew from The Sinquefield Cup. It's also why he resigned after playing one move against Hans in the Julius Bär event. Hans has repeatedly violated Carlsen's mistress, Caissa. It's also why those prominent individuals who are berating Magnus for withdrawing should, perhaps, pause and reflect. In the future, perhaps tournament organisers should feel constrained to invite *either* Hans *or* Magnus. But not Enzensberger. And definitely not both Hans and Magnus. The way to avoid prominent withdrawals from elite tournaments--round robins in particular--is to avoid inviting self-confessed cheats to play in said tournaments. The way to avoid premature resignations in online events is to avoid inviting self-confessed cheats to play in said events. The fact that they're 100% certain to get away with cheating (as is demonstrably the case with respect to Hans Niemann) simply encourages would-be cheats to become repeat offenders. Now, with regard to The Sinquefield Cup, from what he has--and more especially hasn't--said, with 20/20 hindsight Magnus realises (it seems to me) that he ought never to have agreed to play in the same tournament as Hans. But Magnus likes Rex and Jeanne Sinquefield, and appreciates their very substantial contribution to chess, globally. For these reasons, probably he felt obligated to play in The Sinquefield Cup. Probably, too, he imagined (just as I did before that second league encounter back in the '90s) that he could ride the demon, vanquish it, and defeat Niemann in one fell swoop. As it turned out, the demon persuaded him that there was No Man to whom he was more likely to lose, and lose horribly. Perhaps we can all agree that the problem is that cheating is so prevalent. IIRC, years ago, a study published by an Ivy League university (Brown, perhaps?) concluded that around 60%(!) of online chess games involve cheating. So what can we do about it? Many people in this channel will have watched Francis Ford Coppola's movie: Apocalypse Now. Whether or not you have, you might be aware that the story in the movie has not one basis, but rather two. The more well-known of these is Joseph Conrad's short novel: "Heart of Darkness" (which, indeed, was the working title of the movie). Its other basis was the true history of a real-life US Army Colonel named Tony Poe. Not a little of what is described in the movie as the ostensible military career of Marlon Brando's character, Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, is lifted directly from the *actual* career of Colonel Poe. About 40% of the way through the movie, the narration of Martin Sheen's character, Captain Benjamin L. Willard (who is, ostensibly, writing a journal) describes an operation lately conducted on the orders of Colonel Kurtz, having been conceived by him: "Late summer/autumn 1968: Kurtz's patrols in the highlands coming under frequent ambush. The camp started falling apart. November: Kurtz orders assassination of three Vietnamese men, and one woman. Two of the men were Colonels in the South Vietnamese Army. Enemy activity in his old sector dropped off to nothing. Guess he must have hit the right four people." Now, as I described from my personal experience, above, it appears that the chess community, as a whole, exhibits a reluctance to deal effectively with cheating, and the cheating cheats who cheat (my profuse apologies to Al Franken). Perhaps one of the most important reasons why the situation is... unsatisfactory... might be that would-be cheats know that they are pretty much certain to get away with it, and that even if they're caught, they'll incur no penalty. So my position is this (FWIW): Whether or not Hans Niemann cheated in The Sinquefield Cup is irrelevant. What *is* relevant is his having admitted to cheating--more than once!--in the past. Anyone who, for any reason, at any age, under any circumstances, is disposed to cheat...is not a chess player (regardless of how talented they may or may not be). Furthermore they're never going to *become* a chess player. Not. Ever. That individual is a violator of Caissa. Nothing more... nothing less. As such, that individual is not welcome in the community of chess players (Gens Una Sumus). Ideally, there should be a clause in every EULA, and in every professional tournament and match contract compelling would-be competitors to agree to the following: If caught cheating then after a first infraction, whether online or over-the-board, the penalty shall be a lifetime ban from all competition, whether over-the-board, via correspondence, or online. (Yes, I know that in correspondence competition artificial assistance is extensively employed.) A further clause could be added, forcing would-be competitors to agree to forfeit 100% of after-tax income, whether from chess, from other vocations, from businesses, from investments, from gifts, from welfare payments, from insurance dividends, or whatever other means of subsistence. Forever (i.e. their estates should be liable, posthumously, too). The same should apply to anyone who refuses to disclose the identity of known cheats. Apart from other considerations, withholding such information could produce a negative effect with regard to the value of your acquisitions.... If we adopt these straightforward measures, then (unlike Colonel Poe's actual result of actual operations) the incidence of cheating may not drop off to nothing, but it should undergo a dramatic reduction. If we do anything less, the incidence of cheating may simply continue to increase. Just my two cents.

Niemann says he only cheated twice. no. he got **caught** cheating twice. You'd have to be completely naive to think those just happened to be the only two times he cheated. another way to put it is he's been cheating since he was at least 12 years-old, and didn't stop after getting caught the first time.

I have inside information about all of this. It all comes down to magnus finding out that Hans is a significantly more prolific cheater and has been cheating more recently than the chess community has been led to believe. Chesscom acquiring PlayMagnus put Magnus in close contact with a Chesscom employee that divulged over a thousand instances of Hans botting and using engine assistance. Magnus can't show proof without outing the employee (it's not Danny) that divulged confidential information, doing so would put the employee in legal and professional jeopardy. A lot of things are going down behind the scenes. A few GMs have been shown the evidence under the compromise that they wouldn't expose the leak. Look at Levon's interviews, he went from supporting Hans and calling his peers "paranoid" to being highly suspicious of Hans' online history. The only public development will be Chesscom exposing the information on Hans or someone in the know being so fed up with Chesscom's handling that they leak all of the relevant information. Magnus will not be the one to show this evidence in order to protect the Chesscom employee, if the employee is ok with information coming out he's going to expose it himself. Chesscom looks so bad in how they've handled Hans' violations of fair play i doubt they'll willingly admit sweeping over a thousand (including recent) violations of fair play under the rug.

I’m a believer that Hans “cheated at least 2 times” nieman did not cheat at St. Louis, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is a cheater and it changes the dynamic when you play a cheater in a competitive environment. A dummed down example of this in case you’ve never played games competitively, let’s say you are playing poker or magic cards with someone and they are caught cheating, now everytime you play that person you will have to watch them that much more closely to assure a fair game. Even if Hans never cheats again, his cheater title will follow him and forever taint every game he plays in the future.

A couple interesting points from today: First, It was fascinating to see Hans get a completely busted position on move 14 (making a 1-move blunder) against Erigaisi. Imagine a guy who put together a crushing game against Magnus 2 weeks ago, but was unable to explain his thought process, only to get crushed by another junior 2 weeks later (in a similar opening) and drag out a lost position for 25+ moves. Second, Hammer missed the point. If Magnus is protesting (which seems to be the case), he is not doing the unsporting thing. That is how you voice the protest as a competitor - you don't compete against him.

The idea that Magnus has strong convictions about Hans's cheating doesn't make sense UNLESS Magnus thinks Hans cheated at Sinquefield. It is well known that Hans cheated years ago, so if Magnus has such strong convictions about it, why did he even play against Hans in the first place there? To me, it looks like Magnus got beat fair and square at Sinquefield and then decided to throw a tantrum about Hans's cheating from years ago. This is not a good look at all for Magnus or chess, and Magnus needs to man up and make a statement about it or move on. It's completely unfair to a young man, Hans, as it could quite literally affect his entire career.

Like most things it ALWAYS has to do with money. Look at the prize money here at this tournament…with that amount of money there will be some serious effort to cheat but it will be sophisticated. This is why I believe Magnus is staying quiet on the events because the rabbit hole goes deep. With cryptic posts and one move resignations Magnus is making a protest slowly and still saying quiet because there must be a HUGE scandal in the background. Nieman , is just a pawn ( no pun intended ) in some huge cheating scandal behind the scenes in my opinion.

Just went back and watched the Hans Niemann Round 3 Interview. Titled “Niemann: Magnus Must Be Very Embarrassed to Lose To Me” on the Saint Louis Chess Club Channel! I can’t believe the Saint Louis Chess Club channel would actually post that title! How unprofessional! Aside from the fact that the first two minutes of that interview feel extra sus after more recent events. We can actually make a few interesting observations. Whether Niemann cheated or not, Niemann bragged like a pretentious twat after his victory over Carlsen and boy oh boy did he enjoy himself and the limelight while he was doing it. By denying play with Niemann, Magnus has taken away the satisfaction of the braggard. Cheat or not, Niemann will never be able to speak like that about a game he has against Magnus ever again. Perhaps without an incentive like bragging about triumphs over the world champion, Niemann will get bored, or he will have to find a new way to satisfy himself. His shit attitude speaks for itself, not his sus chess.

as I said also in a previous comment, you manage to summarize the situation in the best way possible. I appreciate that you avoid positioning in the absence of OTB cheating evidences. But I really want to express my opinion, judging after seeing a lot of content related to this in the last weeks. This guy is very dangerous for the world of chess. It is really sad that at this level it is happening this drama. And once that the cheating virus touched you in online, it is hard to believe that he didn't at least tried to cheat also on OTB chess. Beside that, his overall aspect and behavior is far away from decent. More like a psycho sometimes... Personal opinion, please don't judge me very harsh.
@robinesperoza2 жыл бұрын
I understand your position, I tend to support Hans. I feel he is innocent until proven guilty. Yes he did admit to having cheated online, perhaps extensively so. Yet this is three years later and Magnus failed to provide any proof. Also let's face it. Magnus played a horrible game. I have seen few games of Magnus in this time control where he played so badly. For example Hanses ...Be6 is not a brainer, it is a counterattack. I personally feel the chances are higher that Magnus is a sore loser, then that Hans cheat. Personally, I think he didn't cheat in OTB chess. But even if there would a 90 % chance Hans cheated in OTB chess, I would still not want to prosecute him, since I would have 10% in doing serious harm with these accusations.
@deceased45042 жыл бұрын
@@robinesperoza I don't get why people are asking for said proof? How do you find that proof when people who commit crimes hide their tracks? Especially in this scenario... @robinesperoza2 жыл бұрын
@@deceased4504 I know it is hard, but what is your alternative, not asking for proof? Magnus can just accuse a player of cheating and we have to believe his word for it? Cheating is difficult to detect, but that doesn't mean someone who is suspected actually cheated.

Hans did not cheat in Sinquefield Cup. Magnus played poorly and recklessly and Hans punished him devastatingly. He didn't give him any chance. I normally play on a certain website and every time I beat an opponent rated over 500 points above me, the first thing they do is to check computer analysis. They play bad chess thinking you will make mistakes and when you beat them, they think you have cheated. I know many people will confirm what I have said.

Magnus' actions make sense: if Hans is cheating, playing him will have the exact same result as resigning after one move, except that it transfert Magnus' reputation to Hans. If Magnus just resigns, there is no such benefit and it doubles down on the suspicions. People have a tendency to think that a cheater would win everything (because he can), but a smart cheater would "balance his range": lose a few games, win some key games to get his name out there, make occasional blunders, some inaccuracies... basically make his progress look as organic as possible. Cheating well is impossible for a bad player because you can't always cheat, and there is too much of a gap between the times you can cheat and the times you can't, so it becomes obvious. However, for a good player who is almost at the top level but not quite, how do you prove someone cheated? At the end of the day, there is no move on the board that a computer can play but that a human can't play (even if for completely different/wrong reasons), and you can't really say "these moves are too good for him" because what is he is just that good? Anyway, for me, the case is open and shut: 1. Hans cheated 2. Hans lied about his cheating in his "sincere confession" interview. => Can't be trusted.
@PkBTH2 жыл бұрын
I mean there is no benefit but is bad for any organizers. At least how one acts is that players oblige to a competitive integrity, and now Magnus might be seen as no different from Han in the competitive integrity. Magnus is well-known so he might not receive large backlash, but it is not preferable for organizers anyways even if the situation is clarified afterward.
@sylver762 жыл бұрын
@@PkBTH Controversy is rarely bad for organizers, regardless of whether they like it or not. The controversy in the Sinquefield cup resulted in massive publicity in mainstream media, and caused the event to become known to millions of people who had no idea the event even existed.
