British Racing Green actually derives from a motor race in Ireland in 1902. The British cars were painted green out of respect to the Irish for holding the race. After that race the British continued to use similar greens on their cars.

I owned an '88 911 Targa Carrera, purchased some 10 years ago. This was the Commemorative Edition in Diamond blue metallic paint, short throw shifter and stitching in the headrests. I absolutely loved that car. It was a car that forced you to drive it and pay attention. The clutch was super stiff, the steering precise with no power assist, the brakes could bring you to a dead stop from 100 mph almost immediately. The fun part was 2nd to 3rd gear. Well one of the fun parts. I had to sell it for various reasons, but you can definitely have an emotional attachment to a car.

I totally relate to his statement about driving and how it allows you to disconnect from the rest of life and really unwind. I have a few routes that I take regularly to go and unwind, ranging from about 15 miles to 150+ miles, mostly on back roads through the middle of nowhere. Since I live in NH, about 3/4 of a mile from the ocean, I can either blast up the coast in the early morning or late afternoon when there is little traffic, or go inland and/or up to the north and into the mountains. Either way, I get to enjoy the natural beauty of the landscape and nature. I'm not so lucky as to have a plethora of Porsche 911's in my garage to choose from, I do have (what I consider to be) some rather nice vehicles that are a ton of fun on the winding roads here in NH. The first, and my favorite, a supercharged 1990 convertible Mustang LX (306ci with 515hp/460tq at the wheels) , which is rather lightweight at a touch under 2800lbs, and handles quite well with upgraded suspension and sticky Yokohama tires. I love getting up into the mountains, opening the exhaust cutouts and hearing the roar of the exhaust while I carve through the winding roads of the mountains and valleys. The second is a 1989 Chevy S10 with custom chassis and Jag 5.3liter V12, which probably makes 375hp or so at the flywheel. Its a completely different experience from the mustang, but still wonderful. The V12 just loves to rev, and that unique V12 sound is like music. It lacks the brute force torque that the Mustang has, but it still pulls pretty good. You just need to keep the rpms up and let that V12 HP pull you out of the corners. And I can't say enough about the way it sounds, as its amazing. It runs custom headers into dual 2.25" exhaust with a X-pipe and Magnaflow Bullet race mufflers, exiting just ahead of the rear tires. Its very raspy and somewhat high-pitched. You would think it was a European sports car, until you see this little truck coming down the road. It gets a lot of attention, especially when I tell people it has a V12 in it. A little about the Jag V12. They are relatively easy to find and can be had for very little (I got the complete car for a few hundred dollars. It was a rust bucket, but had low miles and a solid engine). As long as it doesn't need a bunch of work, they are great engines, just expensive when they break. But if you want a low-cost V12, the 70's and 80's Jags are a bargain. And there is nothing like the sound of a V12!

Never had a Porsche but I know exactly what he's talking about, I had a 2015 Mazda 3 that I felt the same way about. The seats squeaked and creaked, the radio didn't work very well in the winter, all four wheels had curb marks, there was a little rust mark on the drivers door, rock chips everywhere, the 1-2 shift was clunky, the horn stopped working at some point and I could never figure out why. But that pure, direct feeling connection to the road was there, and just enough power to give you a thrill, but not so much power that you needed to break the law to have fun. I drove the absolute hell out of that car for 9 years, it was like a part of me and I miss it a lot. I have a Mini now. Superior car in every measurable way, but somehow just not quite as fun.

I have a 99 Carrera and I love it - had it for 10 years now, but not the same as an early 911 in terms of road feel. My dream is an early 911S. This is the perfect example of someone that is doing it right. The guy isn't out to showoff his cars to the public, or even really cares what people think. In 1977 as a 20 year old living in Long Beach, CA I knew nothing of Porches but had to have one and found one listed for sale locally -I paid $6k for a 5 speed, steel wheels, chocolate brown with saddle interior in mint stock condition with 55k miles-the older gent was selling for his son and during the test drive mentioned that the car had a lot of pep once it got going in 3rd gear-3 weeks later I took it to a local Porsche mechanic and asked him to drive it and he got in then revved it up and said to me " so how many gears is this" I said 4 speed , and he revved it again put it in gear and it took off like a rocket with black smoke blasting out the back exhaust and he said "no this is a 5 speed you been taking off in 2nd gear"!

There isn't really one tint of green that you can call British Racing Green. The original color was made in honor of the Irish, who hosted British races (racing was illegal in Britain at the time), so they painted their cars the color of a cloverleaf. So Irish green is a fitting name.

Green as Britain's colour is believed to date from a race in 1902 where British Napier cars were painted green in honour of the country hosting the race: Ireland. The colour was originally referred to as Shamrock Green. So Irish Green is more appropriate for this Porsche...

British Racing Green originated in Ireland during the Gordon Bennett race in 1903. The British entry used a green livery to commemorate the event being held in Ireland, then under British rule. At the time, it was known as Shamrock Green.

Very much hope this guy reads this comment. So regarding 3:25 and his mention of british racing green. Yes it is a colour. However, back in the early days of motor racing colours were assigned to countries. Italy was red, Germany silver France blue and so on. In light of this and because one of the first international races, call it the beginning of modern F1, was hosted by the british but was actually held in ireland, so in a dipping of their hats so to speak, the british team decided to paint their cars Green to represent ireland's national colour. The colour became known as britihs racing green simply by default of what country were using it. And thus british racing green.... in ireland. haha So magnus here maintains that porsche perhaps couldn't call the car british racing green but he is wrong i think. I reckon that in fact they called it Irish green as a mark of respect to the true origin of colour. Anyway, this is not the most eloquent explanation of the origin of the colour, but suffice to say that "irish green" is actually more accurate than magnus thinks. Feel free to research it your selves. P.S. I think this is a beautiful car... but green.... any shade of green on a porsche... I'm not a fan. only aggressive looking cars can pull of british racing green as a colour. The E-Type of course or a or the mustang GT fastback.... Something that looks like it would run off with your wife if you turned your back on it. personally i think Black is the best color for Porsche. Makes them look as fast as they are.

Hi Magnus, I had a gery similar car to this one. If you get a chance, try installing a vintage seats 911R seat in it. It swaps out in less than 20 minutes and feels great to sit tight in the turns with an otherwise somewhat bouncy ride. I eventually did other upgrades to my car, such as rebuild the motor with original S p&c's, cams and S carbs which made the car significantly faster and more bubbly at hi revs, but the original 2.0 normale with solex cams was a nice smooth engine with enough power. For the hassle and money though, the 911R seat was best improvement of all....

A Porsche makes you feel whatever you want to feel. The car is built around the driver and engages you in a way that makes you feel alive. Why do I write this?
