Pretty sure anybody below 2200 routinely makes small 1 pawn blunders like this (just watch Danya’s speedruns). Also the 1 pawn blunder isn’t huge but he’s playing against Magnus, that was the blunder, not necessarily the pawn itself. Against most other players he could’ve made a draw even with that “blunder”. This game he already gave up, didn’t even care to stop Magnus’s pawn. He sees it. Don’t think you’re better at chess than him lmao. There’s also zero chance you or anyone below 2700 would’ve stopped Magnus’s pawn advance in game 6 too. Who knows how many 2700’s could’ve stopped it either. How common is chess in NORWAY and Russia? Do kids grow up playing chess? Is it the biggest sport there?
@kaminosystem3 жыл бұрын
@@MrSirBoastAlot I can only speak for my family in terms of how it was growing up. We've always owned chess sets, and played it casually since we were young. But I never learned about strategy or tactics etc, just knew how the pieces moved and played with my parents, friends or grandparents for fun. :) But there was definitely a "chess boom" in the country when Magnus was up for the world champion title. And Norwegian tv channels have had a chess studio with commentators every year since, for almost every big tournament, with an average of over half a million people tuning in to every game. Which is like 10 % of the population. When he defended the title in 2018 almost 800 000 people watched the final game! So Magnus definitely popularized it up here. :) (But the biggest sport is 100 % cross country skiing, which we also grow up doing from we are very young!)
@newpgaston68913 жыл бұрын
Chess is often described as the 'pure, mathematical' game that relies only on analysis and all that, but we must not forget there's a psychological aspect to it too. And that's what seems to have hurt Nepo, after losing that marathon of a game. In a format where draws are commonplace, he didn't just happen to lose games after games like that due to a lack of chess skills. Seems more like he was completely out of it, he wasn't there. It's a bit sad (and I don't see why people are being mad at him, it's not like he's doing that on purpose). Anyway, fun games, and good reviews!
@shambhav95343 жыл бұрын
Even if he didn't do that on purpose, you can't deny you kinda have a "Who let him in the championship?" feeling. Nepo was kind of playing his moves really fast, and they caused the blunders. It is hard to keep on going after losing like that but he could've like played some gambit and had fun in all or nothing style instead of just playing out a few quick matches. I can completely understand why people would be mad at him. He just threw away the only opportunity to see the king's gambit in a world championship. He could've even like kept on going with normal openings, but he didn't; as shown by how much time he spent on his moves. The blunders were caused by Nepo losing his will and playing too fast, and people will surely be mad at you for not trying hard enough.
@goodlife15813 жыл бұрын
And the psychological factors you mention apply to many other situations too, other than chess games. Are you more afraid to lose than your desire to win? Which will you listen to?

@@lik7953revisiting his match since ding v ian has started, and its just depressing to watch Magnus take a somewhat early lead and see nepo crumble after that, the first loss was 136 moves, his next three subsequent loses were 134 moves all 3 games together. Ian had the mental strength to battle against one of the greatest chess players ever for 136 moves, but lost that fortitude after the first loss, and then that blunder in game 7 or 8 I believe where his bishop gets trapped. Imagine being a super GM and just making an elementary blunder like that in the most important match of your life at that time, it’s just shattering to think that you allowed yourself to do that. My heart breaks for Nepo, it's one thing to loose against magnus in Rapid and Blitz like Karijakin and Fabi , but another when you are completely trashed like Anand. But like Anand, Nepo will win the candidates and again challange Magnus again.

@@robbielewis4740 He is not invincible. Karijakin had him, Carlsen was pissed after Karijakin beat him, so much so that he didn't attend press conference. Even Anand beat him in their second match. People with 600 ELO complaining that Ian didn't see some computer line, or had a lapse of concentration for a second and played a bad move, days after after playing the longest game in WCC history will always fascinate me. I sometimes go on tilt if I lose a few rapid games when playing online against strangers, can't imagine the mental strain of not going on tilt when there ae 10s of thousands of people watching, you're competing for a world champion title, and you're playing the against the highest rated player in history.

Like ffs, Ian played every game at over 90% accuracy according to the cap scores. So frustrating to watch these people project hate onto him.
@jarirepo11723 жыл бұрын
What I will remember from this match is the most accurate game ever played in a world championship match. Even that was not enough to defeat Magnus. After that, when Nepo lost that grueling longest game ever battle, he lost psychologically. Very tough match... when you lose a game to Magnus who hasn't lost in a world championship match against anyone for so long time, the pressure must be immense and the challenge to win almost unsurmountable. Chess is so delicate if your mind gets even a little imbalanced, it will be tough to keep up your best game. I guess Nepo just straight up decided to create imbalanced position, even with great risk, rather than going for a quiet draw. And what else could he try at this point? No point in playing for certain draw and losing match almost certainly.

I mean, the better player won. It's that simple and that's the narrative of the match. Which, at the end of the day is an extremely common occurrence in an event where two people compete against each other. Magnus may be the best player of all time, and while he is around, everyone might just be fighting for second best. There is nothing bad about that, nor is it anything to be ashamed of, despite what cringey chess reporters try to elude to with the obnoxious questions they ask.

Levy, I just want to write that I looked forward to each one of your recaps. Any beginner could have gotten as much out of the recaps as a seasoned professional...you were that articulate in your explanations of what was occurring and what should have occurred. I've been playing since I was 5 years old in the late sixties and I couldn't be happier for your success. The work you put in reminds me of a famous quote that success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. On a final note, Nepo's demeanor on the podium is a reminder that the true measure of a competitor isn't found in how they handle the limelight of victory but rather the solitude of defeat.
