My mother had a pet magpie as a child (this was the 1930's/40's and the bird was a rescued nestling), which mother allowed to fly free but it would go with her to school (the bird would ride with my mother on her horse - mom rode a horse to school), wait for her in trees outside and fly to her at the end of the day to go home with her, though mother told me that as the weather warmed, if the school opened the windows for spring/summer, the magpie would fly in, alight on my mother's desk and make a nuisance of itself, as magpies do - evidently the bird loved to steal pencils! My family is Irish and my grandmother LOVED magpies so she encouraged my mother's pet! What she always told us was that if you see a magpie you must always tell the bird hello, ask after his/her family and treat the bird with love and respect so as to avoid sorrow! We have lots of crows and ravens here, but no magpies. What we do have in winter, is Steller's Jays, which are similar to Blue Jays, but a bit different. I put peanuts out for them and they take turns coming for them. They are amazing birds. They come to my window where they know I am, and make themselves known, wanting to be fed. They are like pets.
@nairbvel4 жыл бұрын
Jays are corvids (along with crows, ravens, jackdaws, magpies, and nutcrackers. The corvidae are considered some of the most intelligent birds regardless of which genus or species is looked at. We used to have massive flocks of crows in my area but there was an overwhelming die-off a few years back when the West Nile virus reached this part of the U.S. -- luckily, the crow population has been recovering and while their flocks aren't yet casting huge shadows they are once again common and are working to re-take their territory from other species that moved into their niche. (Although the grackles & jays are putting up quite the fight, it seems...)

@@PaddyWolfe In China the magpie is a symbol of good luck and joy, Also married bliss. Magpies form a bridge to allow the two star-crossed lovers Zhinu and Niulang to reunite for one day in the year among the stars. Barry Hughart wrote a book called Bridge of Birds that included that legend. You seldom see a single magpie, as they are a very gregarious bird. So even in Britain they are seldom unlucky and usually a bringer of joy. Some people moan about magpies eating young birds, but do they hate cats who kill so many more? Magpies can be taught to talk. They look so damn smart. They leave the occasional iridescent feather shining against the rain-soaked asphalt to brighten everyone's day, making it look like a shiny blue angel has passed by. Also, we would be knee deep in kebabs and pizza in most cities if the magpies didn't tidy up. There are many good things to say about magpies.

Such a close-up, detailed photograph makes it clear that while there is a similar-ish sort of bird in Australia, they are not the same species. (Do a search of Images Australian magpie.) The Australian magpie is very clever, sings in tune and has a "laugh". (It's not quite as spectacular as the kookaburra's laugh but it's still a nice sound.) The Australian magpie is famous for swooping on people during their nesting season, and they are big enough that they can do some damage. However, they also can tell people apart and they know who the friendly ones are and they can remember the unfriendly ones for up to 5 years. Both parents are needed to raise young magpies. When the young are close to leaving the nest the young magpies may actually be a little larger than their parents and it is funny to see a bird that is larger than its parents following them around squeaking like a baby bird as they search for insects (especially as, by that stage, they are also pecking at insects on their own!)

I just learnt today Australian Magpies and European Magpies are from two completely different families. I always thought the Maggies in Australia were realted to Ravens and Crows in the Corvidae family, turns out i was completely wrong!
@MrDaiseymay4 жыл бұрын
@@fairie2653 Obviously---when the first Brits arrived in ANY new country, they named alsorts of things , from Places /Cities, to Birds, after their homeland equivalents . The Australian Bird is clearly close enough, to call it a magpie. Best example I can think of, ( although the likeness is poor) is the North American ''ROBIN '', which is more than twice the size of the English one, and not marked anything like it. It has RED feather's on it's chest. It was just a comforter, for Sailors FAR from home.

The connection with the European Magpie goes deeper than feathers with magpies tho. I’m from NZ and the Australian Magpie is common here too. They’re commonly kept as pets here, or at least used to be when lots more people farmed. Like the European magpie, the Australian magpie like shiny things and will thieve. They’re very smart and they’re great mimics both of human speech and other sounds. Much bigger than the European magpie tho, closer to a jackdaw in size. i like them......it’s part of the country I’m used to, hearing magpies warbling in the trees.
@crowrosive4 жыл бұрын
the bird in the photo is a European magpie and a true corvids whilst Australian magpies are not corvids but related to shrikes I believe the term magpie is used to describe several variations of the corvid family a family which includes ravens crows and jays and corvids in general are highly intelligent birds and able to pass the mirror test too, the Australian Maggie is the odd one out here but still a lovely bird

their fueds with specific people can run longer than 5 years - it can be passed down through generations. each mob has their own unique songs, and if you're ever lucky enough to witness a magpie war, their warcries are epic, and once one mob has been driven off, the victors' song is epic

@@chrisdancer8609 I always assumed it was just something dating back to before corvids were so demonised. Back in 1983, I saw 6 magpies from the window of my wife's room while visiting her in the French maternity clinic in Lille where she was due to have our youngest child. The following weekend, I took our other children metal detecting in the Forest of Hesdin where I found a lovely little gold ring in the double loop shape of infinity. It had a small ruby in one loop and a small pearl in the other. Spooky!

My neighbours have a tree that always attracts magpies. I have two cats and one of them had caught one of them. I went to the rescue and the bird was completely fine and flew off to that tree. Now, whenever that cat is outside and too close, the whole swarm of the magpies start making noise to scare her off. They never do this to my other cat. They know that this is the one who attacked one of them, and when she shows herself they warn each other and scare her away.

That’s hilarious. Jackdaws and carrion crows do the same to kites or buzzards. Whenever I see a buzzard it will always have 2-3 jackdaws or crows mobbing it driving it on. They do it because most birds of prey will prey on their chicks who are usually very exposed in the tops of trees. I also have carrion crow colony in a tree in my village

"One's for sorrow Two's for joy Three's for a girl and Four's for a boy Five's for silver Six for gold Seven's for a secret never told Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee Oh the Magpie brings us tidings Of news both fair and fowl She's more cunning than the Raven More wise than any Owl For she brings us news of the harvest Of the barley we done called And she knows when we'll go to our graves And how we shall be born One's for sorrow Two's for joy Three's for a girl and Four's for a boy Five's for silver Six for gold Seven's for a secret never told Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee She brings us joy when from the right Grief when from the left Of all the news that's in the air We know to trust her best For she sees us at our labor And she mocks us at our work And she steals the extra from out of the Nest And she can mob the hob One's for sorrow Two's for joy Three's for a girl and Four's for a boy Five's for silver Six for gold Seven's for a secret never told Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee Devil devil i defy thee The priest he says we're wicked But to worship the devils birth Ah but we respect the old ways And we disregard his word For we know they rest uneasy As we slumber in the night And we'll always leave out a little bit of meat For the Bird that's black and white One's for sorrow Two's for joy Three's for a girl and Four's for a boy Five's for silver Six for gold Seven's for a secret never told"

Growing up in the New Forest, I first learned the southern version, 1 for sorrow, 2 for joy, 3 for a girl, 4 for a boy, 5 for silver, six for gold, 7 for a secret never to be told (ie death). Then while stationed in Yorkshire many years ago, I learned their version which has 1 for sorrow, 2 for mirth, 3 for a wedding, 4 for a birth, then the same 5, 6 & 7 as the southern version.

One crow for sorrow, Two crows for a mirth; Three crows for a wedding, Four crows for a birth; Five crows for silver, Six crows for gold; Seven crows for a secret, not to be told; Eight crows for heaven, Nine crows for hell; And ten crows for the devil’s own self.

I protest against the historical thought, she would be more cunning than the Raven, Oðins bird, otherwise everything is nice :) The Raven is way more intelligent and cunning, way more. However, very very shy and does not like humans looking or coming too close unlike the magpie. The Magpie is #2 in my book, after the Raven :) They are unlike all other birds as the song tells us. I have shot one as a kid, I regret it. The song performance is first class. Thank you.
