Venables anaylsis here is excellent..one of the two key reasons England did not win the world cup in italia was 1. Waddle and Barnes were played out of position, too wide instead of giving them the flexibility to go inside where they could better interlink with Lineker and be much harder to mark..2. Bryan Robson's injury which meant they were struggling in midfield against both Cameroon and Belguim..and also Gascoigne was easier to man mark against the Germans, Robson would have got a purchase in the midfield and freed him...

Kailash Patel Did you watch the Euros 88? Did you see us in Mexico 86 for the first 2 games? Did you know that we didn't qualify for the Euros in 84? Bobby Robson came up with a system that worked for our style at the time. Fine margins decide competitions and because the better sides kept the ball and played a strategic game rather than our domestic full on to and fro version. Had Mark Wright not scored v Egypt in the final group game we would have been playing West Germany in the round of 16 rather than the semis. We could have come home early to more derision from the press and disgruntled fans.

@@dogtag869 Yes i watched all of those games (im in my late 40s) and i have made the comment that in Mexico 86 England started poorly when in fact Bobby in the pre tourney matches (esp against the soviet union) they had the framework there, Lineker/Beardsley up front, wilkins/Hoddle not working in midfield and a back four. (with the full backs not pushed to far).also place for Hodge and Steven outwide and bench Waddle, use him as a sub..i love bobby robson, but he never stumbled on the team, it was already there and in Euro 88, they were pretty unlucky..

@@kailashpatel1706 We were awful in 88. Made some glaring errors. Again, fine margins though I agree. He was undecided about Gascoigne until Czechoslavakia just before the WC in 90. That he was maybe too young!? Bryan Robson’s injuries were a curse to us but we heavily relied upon him whilst there. We were more of a team without him but really needed him in the big big games which is ironic. Can’t believe Italia 90 was 30 years ago now.

Great uploads, do you have any full broadcast coverage of World Cup or euros on itv or bbc?
@SiBanstead893 жыл бұрын
Its hard for anyone to upload them due to FIFA & UEFA taking the videos down as its their feeds all being said. The Beeb and ITV just have the rights to show them.

Such a shame he got the injury in the cup final. Never quite the same player after that. You also wonder what would have happened if he had joined United instead of Spurs. Probably would have won a lot more trophies for a start and would have stayed at the top level for a lot longer

To be honest, That's the myth, but it wasn't that injury that ruined his career - he actually ended up making a full recovery in 1992 when he made his protracted move to Lazio. Watch Gazza's Italian Diaries on youtube - he says that his knee was stronger than it was before, after all the rehab they had him doing, and he showed he still had his pace in his first season with Lazio. He was playing in the best league in the world, against the best players. Things started going really wrong in 93-94, when he ballooned up massively in weight, couldn't lose it, and performed poorly in the majority of the world cup qualifiers. It's just a shame, I'm not knocking him, but Gazza's problems were mainly due to his weight problems, and also his inability to avoid controversy. Watch Inside the mind of Paul Gascoigne on youtube as well - that highlights how his problems were always there, even as a teenager, and were always likely to hold him back in his career.

I could never understand why they let Terry Vanables go after 96, he should have actually taken England over in 1992 at least go until the WC 98. Unlike Hoddle he would have taken Gazza to France
@diptastik56513 жыл бұрын
Hoddle was right not to take Gascoigne . He was dreadfully unfit , instead of preparing himself correctly he was out getting pissed . He was told by Hoddle to get serious and he didn't . Too busy having fuck heads like Danny Baker and that twat Ross blow smoke up his arse .

@@diptastik5651 Gazza was a player who didn't need to be 100% fit in order to play well except when he was injured. He was like Maradona, Best, brazilian Ronaldo and many others who could help their teams in any way

@@diptastik5651 England never lost a match over 90 mins with Gazza and Ince in the middle. In the qualifiers Gazza had some very good performances for England including the game in Rome that got us to the world cup. He lived for those big international tournaments and nearly always came good in the biggest games. It was a mistake not to take him and wasn't justified based on actual performances for England. Hoddle was all about Hoddle and making statements which subsequently lost him his job in the end.
