Could you do a step-by-step tutorial on setting up for a boom and zoom? And on recovering from a bad first pass? In American planes in particular, when I boom on a plane it feels like I'm either going too slow (and they shoot me down on the zoom) or I'm going too fast (and my controls stiffen and I can't get guns on). And since I usually dive to clear someone's six, there's always this urgent siren's call to just turn one more time and save the teammate. As a noob, I think there's a (potentially long) period where you know broadly what you're supposed to do but don't have the details in a playbook or your muscle memory.

@cloroxbleach92226 жыл бұрын
I find it extremely useful to know when you are going to have a bad pass, while Boom and Zoom is not all about diving, knowing when to disengage when you're having a bad pass can save at least a usable amount of altitude and potential energy. But this is only done by words, you have to develop something from this theory that I don't know if you're going to find it useful
@Isegawa20014 жыл бұрын
Ideal B&Z dive speed for props are between 550-650 KPH. If you're going against fighters, avoid diving from directly above. Ideally you want to dive from just behind them. If you miss the pass, start a good climb at at least 25°, preferably higher. Gain speed and altitude if the situation calls for it, and do it again. This is how I do it.

That intro was HILARIOUS. However, I should note that in Grivious' defense, Gaijin DID nerf the Ho-103 (the MGs his aircraft was armed with) HARD in the last major update. The API rounds in most of the belts became regular AP and the API-T rounds became just tracers. Note that this nerf is unhistorical and goes completely against MULTIPLE sources provided to Gaijin from both Japanese and American documents. Now, I do have some observations that I'd like to make note of: while a suboptimal choice to engage two on one, it does look like the Spitfire may have done so primarily to protect the P-47. His mistake was COMMITTING to the engagement afterwards instead of breaking off once his wingman was in the clear.

Important video Magz, these always help the community. If I were to add to the discussion, I’d say flying by the books is a great place to start, relying on boom/zoom or strict energy fighting can give you alot of useful habits, but I would suggest letting yourself open up as you get more experienced. I was only able to fly more aggressively with success after about 1000 hours of fighter combat. If you’re new to warthunder or haven’t hit your comfort zone in the air yet, my 3 biggest suggestions are 1, bind 2 buttons for up and down elevator that you can utilize while looking behind you (makes defensive flying so much easier) 2, warm your self up to taking really hard deflection angle shots, the more you can shoot from an angle above or below the enemy in a 3d space as opposed to having to get RIGHT behind them, the better. 3, get used to abusing your flaps in almost any fighter, they are extremely powerful as long as you remember to flair/pump them when you get near the rip speed for them.

Just treat the Fw 190-s as they were American. Huge guns, huge speed, no turn. Treat the Bf 109 as something in between an American and a Spitfire. Moderate turn, moderate speed, good guns. Spitfire are moderate speed, good turn, low guns. 4230kg loaded weight/ 30.86m2 wing area gives it very low wing loading of only 137kg/m2
@gideonokun55386 жыл бұрын
Exactly, size is not the same as mass! A good example could be the Tempest mk2 vs the Sea Fury FB11. The Sea Fury is small compared to the Tempest, but its mass is actually a tiny bit higher (just a tiny bit). One has to consider the combination of material, construction and size in order to get a rough idea of the mass an aircraft has. If you want know how good the sustained turn rate of an aircraft is, you should consider not only the wingloading, but also the powerloading. Turn rate at corner speed, however, is allways difficult to predict...

I believe I have made a number of these mistakes, albeit not consistently. Generally, I do try to BnZ properly, keeping an airspeed advantage, opening up distance, etc. However, I tend to have a lot of trouble setting-up good kills, and I've realized I really don't understand how to in a BnZ fighter. Most of my engagements follow a pattern of Approach->Pass->Miss->Disengage, which is not only frustrating, but I also don't really understand what I should be looking for to help turn those misses into kills. Even some of my "best" performances tend to result in me ending the game with no kills, either left behind by my team or outnumbered heavily by the enemy.

I have found that the noob wobble is somewhat effective in AB, with many low-skill players around. Because of the enhanced flight models on the aircraft, the speed lost is not very critical and I have been able to minimize damage from someone I would not have been able to get away from normally, living long enough to even secure another kill or two in a giant furball. However, if playing RB, it makes sense to have more of a priority on surviving than getting as many kills as possible before jumping in your next aircraft like in AB.

You have to pay to win. Also, you are console user like Xbox one, you must get the gold membership. The game is not worth it, people take it way too seriously. But that is modern gaming culture.

Okay. Never give up your BnZ advantage. That’s my biggest problem I always feel like I almost have my guns on target and try to dogfight

Pretty much always comes down to knowing you and your enemies plane use your planes strengths against your enemies weaknesses

I mean when I play war thunder it’s not like I memorize which plane is good for vertical dogfights and which ones have better horsepower I just play

The "Noob wobble" is actually kind of effective against low ammunition planes if you've got enough speed, as then they run out in RB and have absolutely no chance of dealing with... anything.

One plane I do that a lot to is the P51 mustang, and in some cases it has worked.

The only way to learn is to play more, and learn from mistakes. I've done many of those mistakes myself. But I don't know anything about planes or flying, but the more I play the more I know the advantages and disadvantages of the aircraft.
@sulphurous26566 жыл бұрын
I believe it's due to the players being oblivious to other and their own aircraft's capabilities. The first rule of warfare is knowing your enemy, after all.

Thanks to YTers like Jengar & Magz I've become a better player. yet after all the vids and months of watching, it still takes a very long time to actually recognise where you are going wrong and begin to correct ALL of it in a single game. Despite all these many many months I'm still at the intermediate stage of going from 'experienced newbie' and 'passingly good', while trying to cut down on my 'raging n00b' spikes. I did just want to play this for fun and not spend hundreds of hours learning the strengths and weakness of 600 planes in the game, but to rise above BR 3.7 and not uninstall through frustration this is precisely what you end up doing through experience, if not direct study.

In general the biggest mistake is that they settle for the situation the enemy is putting them into, instead of working to get things to work to your particular advantage. Example: Dont settle to a p 47 head on....lure him into it, but dodge, try to take things into a turning/dodging situation, make him loose altitude, and you will eat that p 47 like nothing. People complains about german p47 spam, but they do nothing to diminish their influence, they just follow the 47s game, and they die. You gotta work to your benefit, and not give in to the convinience of the enemy.

"Spitfire pilots seems to be used to being the most maneuverable thing in the sky" That is very true for me, and which is why I am always afraid when I get matched against Japanese, as I did started out in the Japanese line and know very well how easy it is to kill Spitfires.

The examples you showed us were planes who did not perform well in vertical turns, but what about something like a BF 109 that has vertical turns as their strengths? What are some rookie mistakes that pilots do in those machines?

The “Noob Wobble” if it’s spinning, is not stupid, it is strategic and lowers the chance of getting hit

And as we can see, all of the mistakes stem from the same roots. In order to avoid them, you'd have to break off and get away. But that is boring. You've just engaged a target, maybe even scored a hit, you're having fun, so why stop having fun and breaking off? Comitting to a target is more fun than not and therefore people will try to finish their commitment, even if their plane was not designed to do that. Which is why American planes are usually either regarded as "bad" or "boring".
@MagzGTV6 жыл бұрын
"so why stop having fun and breaking off?" - Because getting shot down by an aircraft that you had no chance of beating in a situation where it has all the advantages thanks to you handing them over is even less fun than breaking off, positioning yourself to your advantage and killing said aircraft. In the end we all want to win and find winning fun, there is no point in trying to push an engagement if it's only going to give you a swift trip back to the hanger.
@laisy9616 жыл бұрын
I found the problem is those people's defination of "fun" involve constant Hollywood-style action, even if it put themselves in a bad position. I remember asking some players why they fly low altitude with 109s and 190s instead of climbing, their answers are basically "because it take forever to get in an engagement and its boring"
@julopabene87366 жыл бұрын
MagzTV I know that, you know that. But that requires you to use your head and not fly with the adrenaline. And a lot of players fly with the adrenaline, because they don't think about the battle, but just in maneuvers. There should be an incentive by the game to get people to use altitude for example, but you don't get any score for climbing to alitude, keeping the enemy from that altitude or getting into the fight after your entire team has been annihilated at low altitude.
@MagzGTV6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, That's why I made this video. My hope is it will get the people that watch it to think about how they are flying and consider the situations they find themselves in rather than just reacting. Adrenaline has it's place of course but it must be refined with a little thinking.
@gideonokun55386 жыл бұрын
Getting kills and winning the game rewards the player with lots of RP and SL. I don't see any missing incentives... On the contrary, I've met plenty of scared Bf109 players spending lots of time climbing 3km above me, wait for me and/or my friends to kill all teammates, dive on me, point the nose back up as soon as I look in their general direction then stay 5km above me and lose the game because they feel so uncomfortable giving up altitude for just a few seconds. I don't feel like there should be insentives for them to add 5 more kilometer to their potential energy bank. I think it would help a lot more if people just got more comfortable with their aircraft and its abilities (and inabilities). :)

By spinning if you were going straight, would go through your aircraft, thus bringing it down. If you roll then the bullets will zip right past your plane
