She was a superstar in the fifties. She made gospel and spirituals popular across several venues. She was on many TV shows when they were live. Variety shows mostly. Absolute beautiful voice.

Thank you! She was my beloved Grandpa’s favorite. He’d play her records and cry. Grandpa died in 1978. I miss him everyday, especially now. Say a prayer for New York State. 7,000 cases of COVID19, and only enough masks for 2 more weeks. In my city, the hospitals have emergency tents set up. I saw them and cried. I’m an RN, and I’ve never been this scared.

Mahalia was the Queen of Gospel. The greatest gospel singer. Please play more. A good song is Hold Me, Down by the Riverside. Try in the Upper Room and Move on Up a Little Higher

Soooooooo, I have been watching that video of Mahalia Jackson for YEARS and I have an understanding of the words; however, watching your reaction literally brought me to tears. Wow! Mahalia passed away in 1972 and her music is still blessing people! I'm so glad that you were blessed by her voice, her expression and the lyrics! Anything you decide to listen to from Mahalia would be great!

Now you've listened to Mahalia, you need to check out the other two parts to that magic triumvirate of spectacular black women singers. They are Sister Rosetta Tharp, the Queen of Blues, & Big Mama Thornton, one of Rock & Roll's early innovators........and a great harmonica player to boot!! 😲
