Your Mahalia reaction is on point. She wasn't one to rely on runs or histrionics. She was able to connect to the lyrics and used her voice to connect those expressions to her audience. I can't count the number of times I've listened to this performance but I can say it touches me every time I hear it. You being an actor knows that great story telling begins with connecting to lyrics and words in a meaningful way. That's what Mahalia did as "the Queen of Gospel" Great video as usual!

Correction. She knew which audiences to lay the vocal pyrotechnics on and which ones to be more subdued with. This recording was actually at Bethel Temple in New York in 1963 which was a more upper middle class Baptist congregation. So while she ‘cut up’ a little, she was still tame compared to other church performances that haven’t been widely released. I’ve been privileged to hear some private recordings of her in churches and TRUST ME this is “mild church Mahalia”.

It’s the power of the Holy Ghost and she sang with the conviction of being a true believer.. not a show... They didn’t have or know anything about runs or histrionics...She sang to the Glory to God.. God given gift not a game or show... check out her sing at the March on Washington.. or at Dr Kings speeches.. I grew up listening to her.. I was blessed to be around my grandparents and great grands.. She was their champion through Christ Jesus...we she sang she did mean it ...

YES! Mother Sang that thang. It's all the hurt and pain we endure. And when told you can feel the conviction in it. Mary J Blige also posses that spirit to spirit realness.I grew up in a Old time religion Church and have heard some of the most beautiful singing utterance of the Soul as it's called. I wake up with this song on my Heart sometimes. My life wasn't easy but when I look back I see has carried me through EVERY storm Chile. The good He brought my way

There's no one who could deliver a song like her - the sound is so full, even though it's just her and a piano! You're right, the video quality doesn't matter, because her delivery is so dramatic and builds to the shouting crescendo. I may be wrong, but I think her name is pronounced Ma-HAIL-eea, not Ma-HALL-eea. And if you can sit still through something like that, maybe you're dead. Her technique builds from a simple, controlled, straightforward approach to an ecstatic conclusion.

It wasn’t a show with her it was life experience with God... That’s nothing that can be made up or manufactured ... That’s the power of the Holy Ghost....I’m afraid we are losing that... or connection to Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...You need to check out the version of that song at the March on Washington....check out her singing at Louis Armstrong’s retirement.. She sang Just A Closer Walk With Thee... You only get what she has through the power of the Holy Ghost. That comes with a real and true commitment and relationship with Jesus Christ. Focus on the relationship with God...
