My friends would always argue about the engine output numbers while I tried to explain them how gear ratios matter. They never listen. I know they are from that majority of the audience who make decisions listening to typical car reviewer, who hardly talk about the technical stuff. Well, as a kid from 90's , i learnt this from a game called NFS Underground 2 where you could tune your car, learn fuel mapping, and gear ratios. This is the first video i have watched on this channel, and i had to subscribe. Brother you dont even have to ask people to subscribe, the purist will subscribe cause this real shit. Another great review, no nonsense masala edits, zooms and pan. Phenomenal conclusion, always wanted a jeep style vehicle. But kept delaying the purchase for all the reasons u mentioned. At one stage zeroed in on gurkha, then on jimmy for daily practicality, then on thar and now rox. If I have a deep pocket I would book my gurkha, Scorpio n and jimmy. But I have a shallow pocket with many holes, I guess Rox would be my way at 49 years old... Can't delay my purchase to my grave😂. Ur conclusion rightly nailed it....

A small addition to Thar history - in 1953, along with CJ3B, Mahindra had also bought the license, design, dies and machinery to build Jeep M38. M38 is the father to both Jeep CJ5 & Mahindra MM540/550. But for some reason, despite possesing them since the beginning, M&M only used those design 30 years later in 1985 when they launched MM540.

Best and most Detailed review of the Thar Roxx. The bits comparing it with various options like Gurkha 5 Door, Jimney, Creta etc are very articulate and bang on. Keep it up. The Thar Roxx is a great improvement over Thar 3 door, and it will sell a lot, but is it better than the Gurkha for my use case is the big question for me. You can't as a buyer improve much on the Thar Roxx, but can do a lot of customisation with the Gurkha to make it serve your purpose better.

For off-roaders, the hub and the core issue of course, is the crawl ratio (42.23 and 45.43 for the Roxx & Gurkha resp.). Here both the Roxx and the Gurkha put out similar figures of torque at the wheel in crawl mode (14358 and 14993Nm). The 1st gear ratio at 3.963 & 5.16 (Roxx & Gurkha respectively) which are crucial for crawling ability, also give a hint of the engine rpm (in the different cars) needed to maintain this crawl ability. And as you mention, the higher engine tune of the Roxx ends up giving a massivev edge (15625 Nm) to the Roxx when push comes to shove🙂. The relaxed engine tune of the Gurkha should also result in less stressed engine scantlings of the Gurkha during normal off-roading. This argument among engineers/ buffs often becomes circular - the Gurkha engine is many decades old and its fundamental thermal stress numbers will also be corresponding. The Roxx on the other hand has an engine which (one may assume) is more or less state-of-the-art and Mahindra will have done their sums right - so no danger of over-stressing scantlings even during enthusiastic rock-crawing. Here one must doff one's hat to the Rubicon, with its (so far) unbeatable crawl ratio of 100:1 (it used to be 84:1 a few years back). It has been fascinating deep-diving into the nitty-gritty of the Roxx/Gurkha tech specs. Till now I would chew the fat with folks at T-BHP, but now Tripaccino certainly offers a worthy alternative. And as a retired Marine engineer, I can just say - let the tribe multiply, the more the merrier! Amen

I live in Himachal and I don't intend on doing any off-road for the sake of it but I could really use one in the winters when it snows heavily here. The other use case being reaching some remote places my FWD can't get to. I have not driven any of these before. My 4wd experience has only been in a gypsy and bolero camper 4wd. Since these 3 approach off-roading very differently which one do you think would suit my use-case of snow and mud the best ? Thanks.

Thank you for the detailed technical review, a small query with reference to weight of 4*4 vs 4*2 diesel variant and what will be approx difference in fuel economy of 4*2 vs 4*4 for diesel automatic ( if driven in same RWD mode) given the difference in weight and engine tunning (152 vs 173 HP and 330 NM vs 370 NM)

Excellent analysis as always. I had checked the vehicle few days ago and everything you said was on point. They could've improved the 2nd row ingress and seating and floor layout. Getting in for taller and aged people is a challenge.
