Probably Mahler's most famous composition, arranged for left hand. Intended to be a love letter to his wife Alma, this piece became a popular hit with audiences and is often performed standalone, including once at Robert Kennedy's funeral. It was also featured in the 1971 film Death in Venice. Since this movement was scored only for the strings and harp, the arranger's idea was to similarly limit the pianist's options.
I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about the idea of translating such a grand orchestral piece into one hand, and if I’m honest, I still think there are a few spots where the piano writing could be improved still with fuller textures. However, on the whole I feel the arrangement is quite an effective distillation of the core emotional content of the piece. I’m particularly impressed by the coda, which is about as awe-inspiring as you could ever hope to hear from a single hand.

A shimmering hush comes from the piano when the interpreter has command over how to do more than play notes. Here we witness a superb command over not only the music but the very mystical connection between the heart and fingers and what the heart wants to convey through the interpretation of the music. Such a breathtakingly emotive interpretation has been offered to us by a spirit of music rarely heard in concert hall, chamber or intimate space. Her command of music is to be grateful for, that it exists for us to admire, catch our breath after it being stolen, with a turn of phrase . May you present us your spirit as is the drive for you, but do no harm to yourself. A grateful heart of the listener can not be the response to mute that spirit. A Very Grateful 'Thank You' for sharing your spirit! The Brahmsian.....

Per my opinon, this one-hand arrangement bring this piece kind of "lonelyness feeling" which perfectly matches the original movement's atmosphere

Wonderful in many ways! Did you know this is a great companion piece for issue 122 of Pianist Magazine? One of the features was "Left Hand Focus".

I remember he did. I have asked this question before, even asked for a headphone recommendation. It was something like openback sennheiser.

This piece is not ideal for piano due to its roving harmony lines
