Tioga Fretworks My guess is that was his intention. The Carlton published 1996 encyclopedia of musical instruments lists it as being one of many bass solos that "embody the "grotesque" nature of the bass."

That was also was my first association hearing this video! Frewe Jaque in minor with little rhythmic variations in punctuation.

The solo was supposed to embody the feelings he felt after coming to home to find his sons dead on the floor. I think it captures that quite well

An orchestral bassist I used to know did a combination of the "D-String" and "G-String" versions. Everything except the last phrase was the former version; I wonder what the strategy or desired effect was?

Barry, there should be no question about the fact it is only for 1 player. My teachers go back to Herman Reinshagen. He played with Mahler conducting. It was one player. August Kalkhof told the same story. End of controversie. Nice playing!

The actual manuscript was originally for the whole bass section. Mahler changed it almost immediately after hearing the first rehearsal. Some famous conductors used the whole section, such as Bruno Walter with the NBC Symphony.

Why would he not use the harmonic in the lower position on the d string for the high instead of having that awkward pause for the shift which devalues the note?

I think I explain that in the video. I almost always choose fingerings (and strings) for musical purposes, not technical. The A on the G string just sounds better than a harmonic. If you look at some of the Haydn solos you will see that I do use the A harmonic frequently. The same is true with the Lt. Kije solo where I use harmonics as well.

I realized when I saw the last segment why you chose that specific fingering. Sorry!!! Thank you for clarifying anyways!

So is it recommended to play this using the G string version?

In my opinion, you can get a better phrasing on the G string (vibrato, legato, no string change) BUT on the D string, it is safer thanks to the D harmonic. So it depends on how stressed you are ;)
