Well NDR Klassik you've done it again. I have always loved the music of Bruckner,and the Wand/NDR performances of this composer have certainly contributed to that love, but I have never been drawn to Mahler's music...until I came across this video. wow, this isdefinitelyy one of the best Mahler 2interpretations i have ever heard. Maybe is the best to follow the score (cause Bernstein just ignores the accelerando) the overall piece is also conducted really well and i just like his intertperations and the orchestra did NOT fall short. Bravo!

Klare und wunderschöne Aufführung dieser spätromantischen und großartigien Sinfonie mit gut vereinigten und perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente sowie herrlichen Stimmen beider genialen Solisitinnen und gut harmonisierten Stimmen beider perfekt trainierten Chöre. Cuando una orquesta interpreta esta obra, todos los músicos están super motivados y las interpretaciones son magistrales. Lo más importante es que el intérprete emocioné al espectador. Gilbert lo consigue. Interpretación muy buena y muy original.

The performance is stunning, but the camera direction is awful!!!!

Only one thing irritated me about this performance... The choir stood WAY too early... They should start standing at the baseline of Mit Flügeln...no sooner... Otherwise a good performance... I had some trouble with some choir directors who thought that it was all right to telegraph the choir at the wrong time... The problem was solved mostly when I went through all the vocal scores and highlighted the passages when they should start standing... Five critics actually liked the starburst effect within the choir while stating that might not have been how Mahler intended it at first...but it was perfection itself... BTW...I had five rehearsals with the orchestra (mostly in getting the timing right)...but 15 with the choir... The trickiest part was where to place the hidden brass section and this took two rehearsals before finding the perfect spot for them...and it involved a view of the blueprints of the auditorium I was conducting in at the time... They wound up in an area 12 feet above the orchestra...but out of sight of the audience...
