That is the the great thing about Mahler. All his works are his best. It totally depends on the mood one is in. Sometimes I think it is the 6th. Then for a long time I was convinced it is the 9th. Then I come back to the 1st. Then I keep on being swept away by the 2nd. And then I return to the 3rd, and say to myself: "Nothing beats this". Only to fall in love with the 5th a month later. It keeps shifting and shifting.

At the time of composing Mahler came with these tiles in the manner of symphonic poem. He dropped them at the time of publication: I. "Pan Awakes, Summer Marches In" (itself as long as a Mozart or Beethoven symphony!) II. "What the Flowers in the Meadow Tell Me" III. "What the Animals in the Forest Tell Me" IV. "What Man Tells Me" (mezzo-soprano solo) V. "What the Angels Tell Me" (children choir, mezzo & no strings) VI. "What Love Tells Me" I think they still work.

Say what you like, how good is youtube bringing us so many great versions of this magnificent symphony? I've listened to Lan Shui, Bernstein, Dudamel, Andres Estrada, Abbado, Rattle, Barbirolli, Jansons, Haitink and both Jukka and Esa Pekka. All the orchestras they led were brilliant although Jukka needs a little passion I believe. However, love them all as I do, I have never had such a big tear in my eye as I had listening to these wonderful people. Comparisons are odious but, if there is a more magnificent symphony than Gustav's number 3, please let me know!

This is a relatively quiet and fine version of 3. The ensemble is very tight, the alto Ms. Mumford seems proper for the strength of the lower registers required, although she mispronounces some of the German, which seems "fresh" for some reason, and the kids are alright. I suppose much depends on the sound recording, but the tones are crisp and bright coming from a smaller scaled orchestra, which is all to the glory of the players. This is one for the history books, definitely. And thanks to AVROTROS for putting it up.

Can’t believe the audience at the end of the symphony. It seemed, not one knew when the song ended... and I think that was outrageous! For an orchestra who was able to place sounds in my ears and make me tear up at times, there should have been a timely standing ovation.
@Quotenwagnerianer
@Quotenwagnerianer 4 жыл бұрын
What the hell? They were extremely attentive. Stenz kept his arms up. He didn't want them to break out into applause right after the sound was over he wanted them to remain silent for a moment. And they waited until he lowered his arms. Anyone breaking into that silence would have behave like an oaf.

John Bolton should be used for the Mahler anvil - FFF. And someone please lock Trump in a room and play the 4th and 5th Movements 24/7 for a month. If the Alto soloist doesn't reach him (O mensch. Listening to the recent performance of Mahler's 3rd symphony led by Esa-Pekka Salonen, I feel it has the same problem as this performance. In a word, both performances are lacking in some kind of passion or energy which the performance by the hr-Sinfonieorchester has.

I actually think that the Salonen performance on KZbin is one of the best I have heard. Salonen has an impeccable sense of balance, the sonorities blend and the voices come out perfectly. Mahler is by nature massive and emotional, and I would rather a beautiful and controlled sound than a conductor who happens to look more 'passionate.'

Actually this is an uncharacteristically bad version of three. Especially in the opening, it's ponderous and, when the brass loses tempo, cringeworthy, mistake-filled, almost laughable. They should have practiced much more before attempting this. I'm sure Mahler fans will be non-plussed, as this is not the way Mahler wanted it reproduced, sorry to say. Strange for an orchestra from Europe to be playing so slowly.

I do not believe it is ponderous, or should I say slow. It seems that the other Mahler 3 postings on KZbin are about the same running time, in fact, this one is a little shorter than the average, or should I say faster. Tempo is a matter of interpretation and you either like it or do not. In any event, I am enjoying this recording.
