The Mahlkönig X54 Allround home grinder is the first home grinder made by the iconic brand! These are my thoughts and first impressions of the grinder. Mahlkönig did send me this grinder for free but did not pay me nor did they have any input on it's contents.

Here are my thoughts and first impressions of the Mahlkönig X54 Allround home grinder! In the video I mentioned that this grinder is $749.00 however you can find it anywhere from $599.00-$749.00 online right now depending on options. Mahlkönig did graciously send me this grinder for free but they did not pay me or have any input on this video. Let me know your thoughts on the X54, thanks for watching!

Excellent grinder after using it for 6 months as a single dozer and without issue. What I like about the grinder : 1. Quality / solidly build 2. Produces very fluffy and consistent grind 3. Very quiet. Probably the quietest grinder I had used 4. Easy and fast to switch between espresso and filter grind settings 5. Easy to get into the burrs for cleaning 6. Portafilter fork is very sturdy and well designed and easily switchable. I have seen quite a few KZbin video reviews. All I can say is that they do not give enough credit or justice for this grinder because they have not understood the design behind. Everything aspect of the grinder is designed for a reason which I can appreciate clearly as a user. Even the cup is designed to be big for filter coffee. Not to aid the Portafilter. It is a all ground grinder. So for anyone looking for a all ground grinder, it is probably one of the best in the market for home use.

Got mine for $509.15 directly from Mahlkonig (Black Friday). At that price I’m really happy with it.

The only burrs available for the 54mm platform is malhkonig special steel, ditting from the Baratza Forte, and the Baratza ceramic burrs. Nice review! I think it is a nice grinder. Looks like a “Honey I shrunk the Peak/K30” 😂

Great video! As a former x54 owner and advocate I agree that's it's a killer grinder, however personally I found that if you have any thoughts of single dosing this is not the grinder for you. The issue for me came down to not being able to grind fine enough when single dosing. This grinder is meant to have a weighted load of beans bearing down on the grinding chamber so when you single dose I don't think it's able to maintain grind size consistency. Heck, I even designed a 3D printed weighted plunger and bellows but that wasn't able to solve my problems. Great example would be not being able to pull light roasted single origins (when single dosing) at just off burrs touching. I do wonder if I got a lemon in terms of burr carrier alignment, but it was maddening never being able to pull the shot I wanted (1:2 ration in like 15 seconds lol). So now I have a Baratza Forte and I'm a happy man. It's also the same burr size as the x54 but a bit more clarity. I do know people have swapped in the baratza/ditting steels in their x54 to achieve that. But yes, this grinder I think is good for about 85% of people + cafe's that need a low cost decaf grinder. Also happy to answer anyone else's questions here in the comments.

Thanks for sharing! I too have 3D printed the single dose parts and played with it but I just didn’t like single dosing on this guy. It’s a really good grinder for general use and like you said maybe being utilized as a decaf grinder for a cafe, but other than that I can’t see many “enthusiasts” getting into this grinder. That belong said, I’m willing to sacrifice a little in taste to make up for it in workflow which is why I’ll probably keep it setup for espresso only.
@TheAlexRosas
@TheAlexRosas Жыл бұрын
@@coffeenerdaaron agreed. I also found myself rotating between with decaf as well for the wife so trying to go back to my reference grind size was very tough. 54mm SSPs would be lush though
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
@@TheAlexRosas I can see that being frustrating. I think this grinder is better left setup for one coffee or brew method or only having to make slight grind adjustments.

It's not the first time I've read what you mention, but in my experience I haven't found it the case. The grinder seems to do well single dosing for me, with really no retention if I let it fully run out. If dialed for a single dose, the grinder gives consistency for me shot to shot. Interesting on not being able to go fine enough - I have my X54 calibrated to burrs touching on lowest setting and on light single origins I can choke my machine easily.
@coffeenerdaaron

I now have mine calibrated to just off touch at setting 1 and now it definitely goes fine enough to choke.

I really want to buy this grinder. Just a couple of things holding me back. It’s only 54mm. If there was an X64/65 they’d have owned the prosumer market. The second is the motor. It seems very low powered compared to quite a number of other similar grinders. 120w vs 250-300w doe the competition. It’s probably why it’s slow to grind. The dosing cup should really fit a 58mm filter which it doesn’t. And finally the hopper is too large for home use. A 250g should be standard and the larger one should be extra not the other way around. Still on the fence 😢

I’m so on the fence about this one. I really liked my Ceado but most models that I like are out of my price range right now. I feel like I wouldn’t hesitate on this grinder so much of the burrs were 64mm. Just seems like I could get either a higher quality espresso or a dedicated filter brew grinder. I don’t really need a two in one.
@coffeenerdaaron
@coffeenerdaaron Жыл бұрын
I also wish it was 64mm! Do you need a grinder more for filter or espresso? The new Timemore grinders seem to be very good, I bought an 078.

I have this grinder. I was not happy with it for filter coffee, until I aligned it! And it is shocking the difference. My v60 showed a layer of fines on top and then it disappeared and I get more consistency. It’s more similar to my comandante. Before it was a hario slim … long story short. Align your grinders it’s a world of difference!

@@rodrigosepulveda175 thanks! Agreed aligning a grinder makes a huge difference and I always align my flat burr grinders. The reason I didn’t for this video is that I just wanted to show its performance right out of the box. I have since calibrated and aligned which didn’t take much since 54mm flats don’t typically need as much shimming due to the smaller diameter, but it is better, however I still mainly only use it for espresso 😝

Sorry for the delayed response. While it’s not designed to be a commercial grinder I imagine it would probably last a while I’m like a small coffee cart or something like that. As long as you clean and maintain it of course! But to be sure I would recommend reaching out to Mahlkönig customer support and get their take.
