@@ThomasD3595 Kat, some years ago, was Gail’s video partner in everything presented by SCG. However, we never got to see her because she was always behind the camera, filming that day’s episode. They appeared to have a wonderful relationship with a lot of good-natured teasing and joking back and forth, while their expertise and professionalism always shone through. They ‘traded off’ each other really well, with Kat’s knowledgeable questions and observations, followed by Gail’s summary explanation. They provided the somewhat rare combination in tutorial videos of fun along with informative content, enjoyed by many thousands of subscribers. Suddenly - one day - the studio was uncharacteristically quiet. Kat was nowhere to be seen - nor her infectious laughter heard - with nary a word of explanation from a much-subdued Gail - or from anyone else at SCG for that matter. She was sorely missed, as is Gail now.

I wonder why they produce them in China. I might be picky, but I would rather pay twice the price for a German-produced grinder. € 1000 would not be too out of place for a Mahlkönig.
@jjg196313 жыл бұрын
@georg walt I wonder if they can’t? Why ‘tarnish’ your brand by shipping a product of less quality just because it is for the home market. I would love to see those calculations.
@jjg196313 жыл бұрын
@georg walt they do, but every Apple comes from the far east. Or do they produce their top models in the US?

Mercedes once merged with a brand that, in my opinion, was not up-to-par to Mercedes and adopted their ways of cutting cost. Evidently, many people agreed Mercedes models from that era was the lowest point in terms of quality, including their flagship S class that was made in Germany. It should not matter where a product is built as long as the company maintain the usage of quality parts and has stringent quality control. Once they cut corners with cheap parts, it will be bad regardless the place of manufacturing. Apple is the good example, even they are manufactured in china, they made sure the parts they are using is good quality, and their QC is strict. Now with US-China tension, they have started to move some production to Vietnam, but I expect quality will still remain the same, because of the standard that is set in place by Apple.

@@MrMklasse fair enough. Maybe I should have said that they should not have compromised on materials and just crank up the price. As this pricepoint in combination with the plastic materials (at least that is what I read and hear in reviews) does not give me a good vibe. The gap between this model and their cheapest commercial grinder with 65mm burrs is factor 4. For a prosumer like me that just does not make me confident and if you look at the S-64 Automatic from ECM, which retails around € 900,-, Mahlkönig is giving the perception that they made way too many compromises to get to € 499,-. In my opinion as a potential buyer.

It's cheaper to waste a few ounces of coffee than it is to buy 2 separate grinders. I'm good with that. Also, regarding build... the entire body is metal, except for the very top portion that you pointed to.

What are the internals like? What are the burr carriers made of? What type of gear system does it use? Direct or Belt driven? What are the gears made of? What’s the retention like? What’s the grind speed? Are there different burr options? Etc…You never get to some of the more important stuff when it comes to a grinder at this price range (really any price range).
