You are right about what is appropriate. You very correctly adjusted your finish to meet the needs of the client, not some purist who doesn't have a horse in this race. Your explanation of learning to "leave well enough alone" is also very true. Great job under the circumstances.

Hi Ross, the contamination is silicone from modern spray polish. What I leaned as an apprentice was that you needed to strip to top (as you did) then you dampen a cloth with methylated spirit , then light it , this burns off the the silicone within the wood. We used todo this outside, or with plenty of space. Greetings from the UK

I love how you explain everything so thoroughly, including why you chose the finish you chose! This table will be able to be loved and used for another few generations, I'm sure!

Tks for uploading and the hard work getting this project out the door and back to the customer. Fully understand the acrylic finish. It's definitely best choice for the customer. You did a number of good decisions restoring this table. Greetings from Germany.

When I saw you start with the shellac, I thought bad choice for a dinner table. Nice job 😁🇨🇦

Still amazing, Ross! You're a true wizard. If ever I have any antique wood furniture in need of restoration, I'll be asking for your address.

Ross, great job in a tough situation. Been there. Silicone contamination is tough. I also agree with your description of finish choice. The finish must protect the antique so it can remain an antique. It was in poor shape due to the choice of finish. Shellac is almost always best utilized as a sealer/toner/blocking coat when furniture will actually be used and not just looked at (museum behind glass or a rope). A lot of times I will see antiques refinished with shellac as people claim they can tell the difference between it and some form of more durable converting finish. It is folly and almost always not at all in the best interest of the longevity of the piece. Even us pros sometimes have trouble differentiating the different finishes on pieces without chemical rub tests. But hey, it gives us refinishers guaranteed future work.

I’m trying to understand the orange peeling. Your comment mentions silicone. Can you help me understand what someone did that cause the wood to be contaminated?
@davecornette61883 жыл бұрын
@@donnaml8776 Usually silicone is introduced on furniture through polishes, cleaners or waxes. The orange peeling is just the phenomenon of the coating being repelled from the surface due to the contamination. Mohawk for instance makes silicone free polishes. These are all that should be used on furniture if you wish to polish it. Waxes are easily removed 7P during the stripping process or by using a VM&P naptha wash or mineral spirits. Waxes should be silicone free as well.

It’s beautiful! It’s now all the same color. Remember the middle was one color and the ends another. And now the top matches the base. I really like how it came out. And I like that the owner didn’t mess with the sides. I mean it’s from the 1800’s right. It should have some signs of age. QUESTION: what causes Orange peeling or fish eye? You said the it’s something going on with the wood. What did you mean?

some type of contamination , such as silicone polish

Would more layers of shellac before applying the acrylic have helped with the orange peal effect? I only ask because a friend of mine had similar problems and after taking everything back did about 20 layers of shellac with a pad and it came out beautifully. They didn’t apply any acrylic either but then it was only a small occasional table.
@rosstaylorwoodworking7283 жыл бұрын
no , once it is sealed off it shouldn't have caused any more issues . i went with the dust coat of spray which instead of extra coats of padded shellac to further seal off the contamination . a shellac finish is fine for a side table that is not going to get hard use

It looks great! What made you choose to use a water based finish instead of poly?
@rosstaylorwoodworking7283 жыл бұрын
i have been using the polycrylic for 30 years . the main advantage is it dries very fast and easy to apply . oil based finishes take a long time to dry and attract allot of dust . i have tried oil varnishes and they are tricky to apply correctly .

Could all the fish eye be caused by oil contamination into the raw wood itself?
