In this episode, I maiden my FMS P39 Cobra 980mm Racing plane, which will be the first time I fly a plane with retracts and flaps. Spoiler: things go left very quickly.
I appreciate all of the support I have received thus far so keep it coming!
Stay well,
Bris

Great flight! Im so happy you're ready to fly again! Keep it up! Happy to see you've got the throttle cut set up! 💯 Since it sounds like that has a gyro and you're flying in the learning/beginner/SAFE mode, it might be configured to climb at more than half throttle. You could fly it and try it, or bench test it if you take off the prop or have a safe space to restrain the plane and throttle up and watch the elevator. If that's what you've got on this model you can use the throttle to ease the plane down next time.

I appreciate this! I've adjusted the elevator mechanically and now she flies straighter, but I will definitely look into the difference in beginner mode, never thought of that.

Good job on your maiden. Will that radio allow mixing? If so, program a 'mix' of flap/elevator that gives you some down elevator when you apply flaps. Experiment with it at altitude, instead of on final. Also, you may be able to go in and adjust servo travel for the flaps and decrease the percentage. Another adjustment you could try is 'aileron differential' - i.e., on right aileron gives you full up, but decreases the left/down. You have an amazing wife in that she tolerates your hobbies!

Check, if the expo needs to be set as negative numbers on that TX. 30% should be easy to spot, like, if a lot of stick movement will only have minor effect and getting more towards max position. Maybe it does the opposite, namely lots of servo first and then less and less movement. I would program low and high rates and finally, make a flap to elevator mix and change the deployment speed to 2 seconds, this way, the plane can slow down while the flap is still moving. The elevator mix will compensate for ballooning. Consider watching BrianPillipsRC video on the P-39 unbox and setup. The vids are very lengthy and Brian loves to talk - still he is a good entertainer and provides a lot of information, particularly for beginners. His vids have helped me lot in the past. I agree that you were very lucky, but still did a good job given the twitchy controls! BTW: yes, the servos shouldn’t dent the foam as this puts additional load on the servo gear. Even FMS is partially doing a bad job on glueing in parts or servos. If one comes loose, you have to glue it back in or disaster will happen sooner or later. Check if you can reach the control horn screw of the servo and move the neutral position so that max deflection doesn’t make the horn run into the foam, then compensate the difference in length with turning the clevis. If you can’t reach the screw and don’t want to break loose the servo, consider cutting the foam where it is dented, or limit the control throws in the servo settings on the TX. Hope this helps.

This helps a lot Alexander, thank you! And I've watched Brian Phillips videos on the p39 ad nauseum. The sad part is unless you stick thru the whole 9 hrs, you might just miss the critical info you need. 😂 This is why I've been trying to shave down my "tutorial" vids. He and "Camera Crew" are a great team, and I admire them. I've been playing with the expo and mixes, so if i film another flight with it, I'll talk about what I've done. Thanks again!

When i was a beginner i had that radio. i used to have my flaps set with those knobs. The knobs turn slow and the flaps would drop slow and helps eliminates the sudden lift or drop in elevation.

Very impressive my bro! I think those knobs might be your rudder and elevator trim? Easier adjustment on the fly, much like the full scale birds. Nice landing, too.. that nose wheel could happen to anyone

I'd try it without the flaps .you should be able to land without the flaps. Also you have a tendency to land hot. Try slowing down. I'd rather see you stall on your landing instead of so hot.. Keep up the good work and you will get it. Also if you're working on adjusting the servos try the middle holes instead of the tops. If needed you can add some shims under the servos to raise them popsicle sticks work great. Plus you know popsicle 😂.

At a club I learned to land cutting the throttle way out and letting the trainer coast in, then flare to smooth it out. That'd help a bit landing hot. When you're comfortable with a lower power landing, start to get the wings level with bank and line up the plane with the rudder to the center line. Watch the glide angle and imagine where it's going to land, working up towards managing the glide angle with the throttle or flaps. Try it in the sim! ☺️

That's a nicer controller/transmitter, it's good to have functions. It's a bit overwhelming at first but a great starting point. You should do an upgrade like the grom but not too fast it might fall apart, though its a very nice plane. This LCD function style of controller is what you want for your rc cars check the Radiomaster MT12 4 in 1 or Flsky so you can use your recivers you already have.

On a plane that size and weight use only 15 percent flaps if you want to use them at all which I never did. For your expo go to 40 percent and see how much movement you get on your ailerons and elevator which should be very less movement at the top of the sticks. I also would extend the sticks as long as they could go if that is possible on your radio which would give you more expo and a better feel of the radio. I know flyers that won't use any expo because it was too complicated give me a break. You were to high in the landing pattern, make some 100-foot ovals then let the plane drop in. It was good to have the wife as a spotter with you just to be on the safe side while flying in an active parking lot. I was at a flying field one time and a flyer flew into my car which still has its scar.hahahahahaha

Are they digital servos fitted? May be a problem with reciever, if they are analogue servos best to switch to digital. Are you using dual rates? set low and high, if you have a 3 position switch set medium as well.

It's quite common for warbirds to balloon up when the flaps go down. Alot of transmitters come with the option for flap/elevator mix so you can mix a bit of down in when the flaps deploy. Try using half flaps on anything but flat calm days. I admire your enthusiasm but I fear this is going to be an expensive journey for you 😀👍

Do you ever use mixes with RC cars?
@bigbristv
@bigbristv 22 күн бұрын
I've never had the need. I do use a mix for my flaps now on this plane, so they aren't so drastic 😄
@SeanPoulter
@SeanPoulter 18 күн бұрын
It is interesting that this model's manual doesn't have an elevator mix. Depending on the model and flight characteristics, you may find the manufacturer recommends adding some elevator down (same direction as the flaps) to help keep the nose down. They'll also be deployed over a few seconds (2s) instead of immediately.

Another exercise to do is to see how slow you can go before it's called dropping a wing. You have to do it high so you can recover from it but also dropping your air speed without losing your plane into a death spiral. Fly in a oval very slow at a high altitude and keep slowing the plane down to a landing speed. I didn't see anybody make the comment of dropping a wing or seeing how slow you can fly the plane for a nice landing. Since you are trying to teach yourself without an instructor which I was at one time I can see all the mistakes you are making. I was walking onto a field one time with Rocky and a plane crashed about 10 feet in from of him and the pilot didn't say a word he was losing control of it. Bring the wife for those second set of eyes. Goggle the maneuver and maybe somebody can explain it better than me .

I swear I'm only running 50% most of the time. Trying to slow it down is the problem. Comments got it in my head that this thing will fall out of the sky if flown any slower 😶
@SeanPoulter
@SeanPoulter 22 күн бұрын
Ah, there's always gonna be those folks. Get it at least 3 mistakes high and try to see how slow it'll go, safely. If it's got SAFE or similar you can set up a Panic button to recover for you and make it really easy to learn. Learn how it stalls and get comfortable so you know what to expect. Does it just feel mushy and get the nose down, or does it drop a wing? When you're comfortable you can also try a spin or even an "accelerated stall" which is how a lot of people crash their jets banking too hard without 3 mistakes of space. Learn the flight envelope and fly the wings off your toys! 🤟

@benjamindurbin4065 OK, I see now. You get what you pay for. I’ve used a few Flysky transmitters, and while they lack in instructions, they make up for it in upgradeability and function for price. It does what you need it to do. Having seen some of the Spektrum transmitters, I can see why they are nore expensive. But if you only need the basics, the Flysky does the trick. And for cheap. Hope this helps.
