One of the best explanations for multiple topics related to basic scope/rifle alignment and how your scope and base work together I've heard yet. No one explains things from the ground floor up anymore. Well done.

Put a 20 MOA base on a Ruger American in 30-06 with a Barska Excavator scope and with 178gr light loads, I was within .5 minute of not being able to zero at 100. Meaning the turret wouldn't adjust any lower without really cranking on it. Upgrading soon to a 30mm BSA tactical. Just got find a spot for over 300 yards

granted. not exactly a hunting/ 3 gun setup. but... im still sitting on the learning curb as it were. and thanks quite a bit to your channel, im learning a metric shit-ton. lol. theoreticly after 300 yards you've got nothing but drop depending on the load (im using 308) and elevation angle. im guessing a stand alone 20moa is that sweet spot for a do-it-all-good-enough kind of rig.

Hi John, Your presentation of 0 MOA versus 20 MOA bases was outstanding and I got it. I was unclear before your presentation. So, now I understand why the NRA had to shim the scope base for the Oswald 6.5mm rifle before test firing to bring it into range so the old scope could be adjusted to zero. Could you do a video on that subject? I'm sure many would like to hear about it. Thank You, Dennis.

John, Here's the deal. I placed a 20 MOA Base on my 5R MilSpec .308 and then topped it off with a new Scope that I've never used, it's a Mil/Mil Vortex. Anyhow, I shot one shot at 100 and zeroed to the shot. Shot 6 more at 100 and 4 of them made a ragged hole and the other 2 barely touching. Moved to 200yds shot 3 times and didn't even touch the 20"x20" backing, let alone the target. Factory 150 gr hunting rounds, not 175SMK reloads or FGMM. What gives? Is there something else I'm missing regarding this base? Never used a tilted base before. Thx man.
@8541tactical
@8541tactical 10 жыл бұрын
If you were zeroed at 100 and you missed a 20x20" target at 200 yards, then the problem is not the base. Even shooting at the 200 yards target with your 100 yard zero and no elevation correction, you should have been on the backer. Check to make sure all your mounting hardware is correctly tightened. Once you zero, you can forget the base has any angle to it. It doesn't need to be corrected for when dialing your elevation.

Great video. I am assisting a friend with a Barret 50 cal. Tridgicon 6 power. I am not a rifle efficient person, untill recently, so I am a rookie. . He is having the opposite problem as is most common in this thread. He wants to zero in at 100 yds but runs out of adjustment and at that point accurately hits 8" high at 100 yds. Calls Tridgicon they send him a canted spacer for the bottom of the scope. I did mention to him that by being bottomed at 8" high at 100 yds leaves him all kind of adjustment for Long distance shots. Dosent matter he wants to hit at 100 yds. So he asks me which way to mount the canted adapter. I thought and after confusing myself a few times ,, told him that he wants the thickest part of the cant toward the front of the scope. If that is indeed correct I may have a simplier way of explaining how to figure a canted mount. This is how I did it. Seems everybody in here puts their first emphasis on the scope and what to do with it etc. etc. etc. which causes you to have to take into account multiple variables .. To simplify it into one variable I just used the scope line of center as a constant. (leave it alone in your thought process, as in it is just plain fixed) Now in our case we are hitting high when we ran out of the adjustment to go lower. , so we want the thicker end of the canted base at the front of the scope so it will move the point of aim for the barrel down, which is what we want.... In the opposite case if you want to move the bullit hits up then again leave the scope alone in your thought process and use the thinner end of the canted insert/mount to the front of the scope which will raise the front of the barrel. I hope I am not wrong and throwing out a bunch of B.S. One last thing is I have heard that these canted bases are not always reversable whereas the screw holes do not line up in the opposite direction. If that is true do you have to specify this when you order a canted scope, insert, or whatever? or do they even make one for the type we need?thx

If you zero at 100 yards, then that means you will no longer make any nob adjustments, right? You’ll use the reticle marks to make adjustments beyond 100 yards. Why do you need the 20 moa scope mount if you will not be making nob adjustments?

I just got an HS Precision 2000 HTR .338L and plan to put a Leupold Mark 5 7-35X 56mm scope (100/50 MOA total travel on it). I want to zero it at 200yds, but still use it occasionally at 880 (1/2 mile) or 1000 yards. The tech support at Talley said I would be OK with a 0 MOA pic rail for no hold shooting. After watching this video, I am not so sure. Thoughts?

To put it simply, a 20moa drop in base, makes you raise your crosshairs 20moa to get back to zero at close range. Now, when shooting LONG range, you have that extra 20moa you can drop your reticle to meet the bullet (since drop is greater at longer distances). Dont forget when trying to understand this. The further you shoot, the more your bullet drops. If the scope starts out angled down, this is like a 'head start' so to speak.

So basically, an angled scope base starts you "in the hole" in your adjustment so to speak, so you'll be limited on close shots but you'll have more adjustability when you really stretch your rifles legs at longer ranges. Pretty much sums it up? Thanks for the video!

Back when I didn't have a lot of building experience, I bought a 20 moa rail for my 270. My local ranges are 400 yd maximums. So for my circumstance, I'm better off without a 20moa rail because I will probably never shoot further distances. Keep it simple right? Unless I build a gun that shoots slower rounds.

Hi there. Joe from NY here. Great video. I have a Marlin 1895 22" bbl that I have owned for years. I have tried 2 different scope mounting systems the latest being a pic rail with weaver tactical 6 screw rings. Scope is a leupold VX III 2-7 x33. With both of these setups The rifle will shoot 6" low at 60 yards with Elev. adjustment maxed out. I love the rifle but have been frustrated trying to zero at 100 yds. I do not want to shim the rear of the base. Do you think A 20 moa base would help solve this problem. I believe this whole situation is caused because the receiver is canted. I have leveled the rifle then put level on receiver and it is apporx. 1/8 " lower in the rear . THank you for your help and keep the great videos coming!

Most guns should have a built in 5 Degree rail not 0. The scope height of 1.5" + 2" of bullet drop at 100 yards = 3.5 MOA of UP adjustment off optical center. And most guns seem to have some barrel droop. The rail and barrel are not made in perfect alignment that is usually 1-2 MOA. I've had a few guns with 1" scopes that I ran out of vertical adjustment due to the barrel rail being so far off spec. I've never needed a Negative rail always a 10-20 MOA just to get that 100 yard zero and keep close to optical centered on the scope. Burris signature rings take care of that issue on those particular rifles.

Hoi John. Great video again! Question: I did some math and according to that I would need to raise the rear scope ring by 1.6mm to get maximum distance out of it. In that case I would only have 3 clicks down left (1 click being 1/4 MOA). Are there drawbacks? I heard it would be better to stay within 1/4 to 3/4 of height adjustment. Otherwise the tension spring inside would be to lose and cause the recticle to move free. Is that true? I am aware I would have to make sure that my shims would be tapered. Thanks in advance for your answer!

Interesting... I just ran some math. My scope has 23(56 total) MOA adjustment. Shooting .308, on a 300 yard zero, my scope has enough adjustment to handle just under 800 yards. If I was to add 20 moa mount the scope would then have enough adjustment to handle somewhere between 1000 and 1100 yards. Question is do I really need it? Realistically I'm going to shoot at most 200-300 yards on a normal basis. The scope is on a 16" barrel shooting 1.5 moa. The gun is only effective out to 600ish yards.

+1 on the short vids, much easier to fit into work, kids and all that stuff. How about some field trip shows? Maybe a show on a typical range session? Multiple camera angles, showing a frame inside a frame with different points of view? The differences in a bolt vs semiauto? Just some ideas. What drills you run through during practice, how you set up as far as equipment, targets and what have you. Thanks for the great info, looking forward to more.

Scopes tend to be more predictable in terms of adjusting dope when they're allowed to stay within their 'mechanical zero.' With that said, any advantage you can get to allow it to stay within that area of mechanical zero when shooting long range, take it. An angled base will give your scope a "head start" so-to-speak. So instead of having to dialing 25 minutes up on a flat base, mount a 20 moa base and only dial 5 on your scope..the gain? More predictable glass, and 15+ moa in your back pocket

@bkfreas- If, at 500 yards, your point of impact is 66 inches below your point of aim that's 13.2 MOA low... In all honesty (sorry guys hate me if you want) don't worry about the extra .047.... IT'S LESS THAN A HALF INCH AT 1000Y FOR PETE SAKE...so for now, omit it. That same 13.2MOA low at 1000 yards however, is now 132 inches and the same '53' clicks if that helps...keep the questions coming if you're still not sure.

Could you please share some thoughts on the equipment used in tactical matches? You did show your Eberlestock and some of the content. It would be interesting to see more of that type. Specifically I am curious on your ideas on how to carry mags, wind meters, dope card, bore snake and other equipment that you need quick access to during the match.There are tons of specialized military style rigs etc, but are there alternatives? Perhaps some thoughts on clothing, headwear, gloves, rtc. too?

Question- I am running a 20 moa rail built into the gun (Larue OBR) with a Leupold Mark 6 3-18 scope. It has built in 20 mils of travel. by my math thats about 68 moa of travel (20x3.6=72 / 1.047= 68.76). What I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around is this: I have it zeroed at 100y, and gave myself .1 mil of down travel when I reset the zero stop, which leaves me 19.9 mils up travel...I would still only have 19.9 mils up travel if it was a level base correct, so what did I gain?

think of moa or mils as a giant circle. Mark a point in the center then draw two lines on there own plane relatively close together all the way to the edge of the circle. You will notice as you move from the center dot to the edge the farther each line gets from each other. This is what is occuring with MOA and MILS.

A question from the admin or any 1 on this channel is if a sope has 120 moa's top to bottom then some experts says that to utilize all moa's u must have a 60 moa base So now how to find in millimeter or in inches that my scope base has 60 moa's Those experts also says that from rifle top (where the rail, ring base then rings r attached for scope) to the scope base u must have at least 1.5 inches gap or distance or height Any video reference or answer here

This was very helpful. I just bought my last rifle that I feel, I will ever need, and I bought a scope for it. I had no idea what MOA would be best. Thank you for helping me understand and look at it through a different lens (no pun intended). I am more confident with what to purchase now. Thank you again.

@roady7420 sorry, hit the wrong button. That last, . 047 of an inch matters. But most scopes are not precise, and at the extreme end of adjustment can be different then the middle. It's best to test it at the range.

Hi John, would you use a 20moa one piece scope mount on a Mega arms 308 project you did? It's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it ?

I have a Zeiss v6 6-30x50 once zeroed at 100 meters I’ve only got 12 minutes of lift I’ve been told I need a 20 Moa rail to allow me to dial down internally refit the ballistic caps and it’ll give me back more minutes on the lift, is this true what I’m being told

hmm... so (all things perfect) 20 moa base + 20moa mount= 40 moa elevation and zero using the top 2-3 mil dots at 2-300 yards ? i know nothing. tagged for thought though.

I wonder how this would effect the ring height? Flat scope base, lowe ring height , would a 20 MOA base require medium height rings?

yes that is correct. or 13.25 moa relatively. because technically moa equals 1.06 inches at 100 yards. for learning purposes your are correct.

Thanks. I just picked up a Remington 700 SPS Tactical AAC-SD based on your review. I am now looking into scopes and base. I am leaning towards the Bushnell 6-24x50 scope. The Bushnell looks like it has 70 clicks of adjustment which is really only +/- 35 clicks. Most of my shooting will be between 100 and 400 yards but I'd like the option of going out further. If I get a 20 MOA base, would I still be able to shoot 100 yards with this combo or would I need a 0 MOA base?
