This video offers the most useful & practical advice for actually deciding on the proper height of scope rings for all rifle platforms or set-ups (hunting, AR, long range precision, chassis, etc). It doesn't blather on about generalities. Instead, it speaks to real decision making and covers all relevant variables affecting the final decision.

John, when it comes to ballistic calculators, how important is the "sight height" ? Is it from the center of the bore to the center of the reticle?

My rifle is a Weatherby Vanguard 30.06. I’m using a picatinny 20moa rail. The scope I’m about to mount is an Athlon Optics Argos BTR GEN2 6-24X50. Please advise me as to the rings height I should use.

The only thing the 60D has thats better is a faster auto-focus and afull 9 points of ref. but that doesnt justify the fact that its 2x as much. Check out DigiatlRev TV's channel. they do good reviews onelectronics and have a bunch on the Canon cameras.

Hi John, I'm putting together a 700 SA on a LSS chassis with a Magpul CTR and .75 cheek riser. I'd like to mount a HDMR on it and thought a Larue LT-120 (1.285" above the Picatiny) would be better suited than a LT-111 (1.535"), but now I'm confused since I just understood it didn't mater so much with AR style stocks?

I have a Ruger 10/22....is it stupid to put a Nikon Prostaff 2.5-10x40 scope on it? My other rifle is a Remington 700. Which rifle would you put this scope on?

Hey John, Mounting up an SWFA 10x42 on a Rem 700 I found that the ocular/ eye lens comes in very close contact with my action. I was wondering what is too close? My previous Weaver scope had a much smaller eye piece thus no issue. Any thoughts? Hate to go with really tall rings, but still need to clear the action.
@JohnMcQuay

If you can slide two pieces of paper under it, you should be fine. If you actually have contact, it's no good.

EGW or nightforce picitany rail is what he has. It will have your scope HIGH >.... too high for my liking As I found out. I will go with low Wiern scope mounts for scope rings.

Thanks for the video so as long as I have an adjustable cheek piece like xlr element chassis a standard AR larue tactical scope mount will be fine because I'm always worried about getting low rings and having my face in an uncomfortable position

great video.. very inormative.. you didnt disscuss the scope's ocular clearing the bolt in boltaction guns.. some bolt actions have a wider bolt open than the R700 and that needs to be taken into account.. good luck. :)

I wish this video was out when I built my 700. I built it blind and didn't do too bad. The Weaver medium height rings might have been better but, I just slapped on a cheek pad to bring my eye up.

JM Why not take a caliper and actually show these newbies by measuring the scope & penny stack (great technique) i.e. take them thru each step. It is the KISS principle of instruction and I am sure the Marines use it...the Air Force did. Don't take my suggestions as anything other than trying to correct the 3% human error and get your presentations to the perfection they approach. Thanks for sharing what I know did not come easy, with those that might be competing against U. Sign of a great MAN.
