Gotta love it how ppl think gardens happen overnight!! Doesn't work like that!! It takes years!! Time and finances and manpower are the key ingredients although sometimes not always available too help build up gardens!!

I had a dump truck bring me a load of top soil. It was cheaper for me than buying bagged although I would recommend mixing it with something. I didn’t have 2 strong young men to help me fill mine. Haha.

Beautiful garden! Just an FYI...If working with perlite again in the future I recommend wearing masks or taking some sort of precautions to avoid it getting into the lungs. It can irritate and harm the lungs. The garden is looking great. I really like the layering idea! Thanks for sharing with us! Bless you and yours! 💜

Looks very nice. I love my raised beds. Easy to weed and takes less water! Built a few new ones this year, put rotten wood on the bottom too. Now I have twice the potatoe and twice the corn space. Harvesting potatoes from raised beds is so much easier! Get buckets and fill while checking for potatoes. As you put the dirt back, layer with nutrients and mix it all together for the next year. Enjoy them!

Sorry for a third comment, 😅 but I just have to say that you guys are so inspiring. I feel like we get hardly anything done on our 1.5 year old homestead, but then I realize how much y’all have done one step at a time in ten years and keeps me going and looking forward. One day at a time!

Looks like all of you had a wonderful time at the swimming hole. I bet everyone was hungry and tired after that, I know whenever I went swimming when I was young, I always was so ravenous afterwards. Your kids are such hard workers, very well behaved and kind. I think a lot of city kids could learn a lot from your children. It has been so miserably hot here in Indianapolis. I know it has to be hot there in Missouri and especially not having AC. Love the kids nicknames!

My husband and I used pine boards as well. After 6 years they are still doing great! Will you have time before frost in your area to grow kale ? The young men do a great job !! It’s been terribly hot here in my area the entire month of July. Chores are limited to morning and late afternoon.
@1000sofroots Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad to hear that your pine garden beds are doing great! I have some kale starts growing at a friends house (they have air conditioning), so I'm hoping they do well and I can plant them as soon as it starts to cool down. Hope you get a little reprieve from the heat soon. Blessings.🙂

Be careful with that Kellogg's brand soil folks! The first year we bought it, it worked great. This year almost NOTHING grew. So I tested it. Very high PH: 12+. High potassium and phosphorus. Zero nitrogen. And I have romaine lettuce growing all over where I didn't plant it so I'm guessing that they pulled this year's dirt from lettuce farms. I've seen other KZbinrs with the same issues with this soil.
@1000sofroots Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. Maybe we will finally be able to get a good beet harvest.🙂 Our soul seems to be low in phosphorus. Hopefully all the composted manure we added will help bring up the nitrogen.👍

I love seeing this! We will be going this next year. I have a question. I noticed you didn’t put cardboard under the beds themselves. Is that intentional? Will the grass be suffocated enough with just the stuff you put in the beds?

Yes, that's the hope. We do put paper down in beds that are shallower than a foot.🙂
