Mainstream Media - Douglas Murray Closing Statement

Public trust in mainstream media is at an all-time low. Critics point to coverage of COVID-19, the 2020 election, and the Ottawa trucker protest as proof that legacy outlets like the New York Times, The Globe and Mail and CNN can no longer be relied upon to provide unbiased reporting. Activist journalists are using pen and paper to push political agendas while their bosses lean into the profitability of polarization. Mainstream media’s defenders argue that their institutions offer an invaluable public service that alternative outlets are either incapable or uninterested in providing: careful fact-based reporting on important issues and holding the powerful to account. In a brave new world of “fake news” and “drive by” journalism, traditional news organizations are essential to democracy and a bulwark against corruption, misinformation and the private interests of the powerful.
Arguing for motion was the associate editor of The Spectator magazine, Fox News contributor, and bestselling author of The Madness of Crowds, Douglas Murray. He was joined on stage by Substack publishing sensation, former Rolling Stone contributing editor, and investigative journalist, Matt Taibbi
Arguing against the resolution was the internationally acclaimed author, podcaster and veteran New Yorker staff writer, Malcolm Gladwell. His debate partner was Michelle Goldberg, New York Times columnist, MSNBC contributor, former American Prospect senior correspondent and senior writer for The Nation.
The audience voted on this resolution prior to hearing the debate. 48% voted in favour of the resolution, while 52% voted against the resolution.
At the end of the debate, another poll was conducted. 67% voted in favour of the motion, while 33% voted against it, representing a 39% vote gain for the PRO side.

Malcolm’s behaviour was super disappointing. Certainly destroyed any illusions I held about him. The irony is his behaviour and tactics are almost a perfect caricature of the exact reasons we shouldn’t trust the main stream media.

Apparently he is aware that he did poorly, and in some podcast did reflect a bit on his own performance. He said he should have been more ready and prepared for Douglas’ razor sharp “Oxford-debate trained” abilities and wit. Sadly for him, as Douglas has responded, he is not “trained” in some Oxford debating club. He just listened and learned - even from people he disagreed with. Even so, whatever abilities Douglas has, Gladwell’s own performance is inexcusable. Dishonest, malicious, amateurish. My opinion of him has sunk from indifferent to very low.
@MrFelixify
@MrFelixify 9 ай бұрын
@@TommyGlint Even that reflection is way off. It has nothing to do with "oxford debate trained" abilities, and even if it was, it's not like Malcom isnt privileged and gone to the bst schools. The difference was, He didn't listen to a single word the other side said, and was weirdly stuck in a loop of bringing up that the other guy mentioned Walter cronkite and that that somehow was proof of his white supremacy and racism. It was so fucking bizarre to watch. How is he a journalist?

Malcolm was so disappointing and dishonest in this debate. I'm so glad that Matt and Douglas were picked for this. Tho it would have been interesting to watch Malcolm debate someone he couldn't just smear as a racist and actually have to engage. Its wild to watch someone expose themselves as racist as they're making assumptions about someone and condescending to them because of the color of their skin. Outliers was written by this guy?

I know somebody that is ecstatic about Malcolm and she brings him up all the time. I had her read "the madness of crowds" and she kept saying how it was just like Malcolm's books so when I saw this debate I was excited to finally see him. I am so disappointed... He was arrogant, dishonest, denigrating, and arguing in bad faith. Maybe he was having a bad day, but I did not like what I saw at all...

I turned away from the mainstream media in 1998. Even then it took a half a braincell to see that it was not 'news', but instead it was 'here is what you should think'. Here in Canada I made a little experiment during the truckers protest in Ottawa.... by watching uncommented livestreams made by the people there, and also watching the media's coverage. It was as if I was watching two completely separate events....what I saw, and what the mainstream media told me what they saw...... it was a total joke.

Douglas Murray: "Having different opinions is so 20th Century, this century we have different facts." This is big! For who lives in a bubble, opinions become facts, own illusion becomes an alternative reality, independent of truth, nature or common sense. That's why dialog is hard, almost impossible. Opinions can be changed, but giving up to a reality nourished from delusion is unbearable, a sort of suicide.

George Carlin once said sarcastically "If honesty was introduced into American politics, the whole system would grind to a halt." Seems like it's become the same story in media and news coverage. Nobody talks facts anymore. We have too many analysts. I don't want a news broadcaster to analyze what I heard someone say. I want facts and honesty. There is only 1 set of facts, no matter whose side you're on or what you believe.
