Good advice BUT (as a singing teacher for many years and teaching breathing exercises (diaphragm and intercostal) the intake of breath should be done through your NOSE, not your mouth - and exhaled through your nose if it feels comfortable) If you breathe out through your mouth there is too much water escaping. If you can let the breathe out slowly it is better. If intake is to the count of 5, a slow exhale should be to the count of 10. It may take time to build this up but it is REALLY worthwhile. Thank you SO much for your concern.

Totally agree with you...As a Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapist i can say that breath in should always through nose not through mouth.

Even though my experience isn't virus related, this technique can help calm panic attacks if you're having one and feel short of breath. In through the nose, out through the mouth. I'm 22 and healthy but I do have severe panic disorder and often it feels like I got the wind knocked out of me but this video and comment is pretty much what I do to steady my breathing. This is a really helpful technique and I hope more people see it!

So glad you explained this. It's worrying that the Doctor is demonstrating the in breath incorrectly.

Hi - thanks for the advice :) Is there any chance you could do the video again to demonstrate, with someone filming you? And - if this potentially makes you feel dizzy, should you demo it sitting down? Older people may try this standing up, get dizzy and fall down. Finally, it wold be good to see how you lay down at the end and where the pillow is - with a demo. I work in non formal education which is why i'm commenting - the advice is great, and for some people to see it demo'd clearly will really help. Thank you!

We didn't make the video, and are sharing it as requested, so cannot remake - but your points are good ones. I guess these guys are pretty busy trying to help patients at present.

Is there any chance you could add either captions or some written instructions to this video? This would help those of us with hearing impairments.

I'll investigate if KZbin gives me a way of doing that Kate. We didn't make the video, and are just sharing it at the medics request.

This is very helpful I’ve had a cough for two days now. Two questions; how often should I be practising this technique, and what if I can’t even draw a deep breath and hold it for 5 seconds? Thanks in advanced.

I wish I knew Ben, but we're not experts, and merely shared the film as the medics requested. I'll see if I can find further info, but I may not be able to. Sorry I don't know more.

Sorry Sandra, we didn't make the video, and are just sharing it at the medics request. We'll have to leave that to your interpretation.

Sandra it means you have to place a pillow beneath your stomach/tummy, while you lay down.

I don't know to be honest Jasmin - we've published the clip but didn't make it - guess its about trial and error for each person.

can you demonstrate what you mean by "a pillow in front"? Do you mean lying on a pillow? What position should your head be in?
@LifeTheBasicManual4 жыл бұрын
Sorry Natalia, we are sharing the video as requested, but are not experts and cannot advise on it.

I would guess: put the pillow under your upper chest area to hold your face clear of the bed. Obviously you if you put your face directly into the pillow you won’t be able to breathe.
