Same with French: She still has enough of an accent to feel that she's not a native speaker but she doesn't make most grammar mistakes most foreigner (and most french speakers as well to be honest) make and the way she pronounces her EUHs is incredibly spot on, it's the most parisian sounding euh I've heard in my entire life^^ EDIT: I'm Belgian so I'm used to hearring Flemish people speak french and I was expecting her as an Afikaans speaker to have some type of Dutch-like accent but she sounds vaguely Russian to me

Lindie Botes HOW DO YOU LEARN LANGUAGES ESPECIALLY "CONNECTOR" WORDS LIKE IN, THE, AT ETC HOW DO YOU ASSOCIATE WORDS WITH THINGS THAT ARE SAID PLS RESPOND
@hughmungus996 жыл бұрын
you can just look up words that are "connector" words. Every language has them and they are an essential part to sounding like a natural speaker if you want to learn it properly. I don't speak any japanese but I always her the word "ano" and figured it was a "connector" word. In english there is so, anyway, um, uh, as i was saying, by the way, etc. and in french there is euh, mais, alors, si, genre, en tout cas, quand même, d'abord, soit, ou, etc.

It's not hard but it ain't easy to learn another language. I'm bilingual and currently in the process of studying Korean. Learning is like a hobby. You need to have passion and dedication. It makes it more fun and less of a pain to study. Spend whatever amount of time you think fit to study that certain language. You don't have to study every day, but you need to keep your schedule consistent. Don't give up and keep learning. Language isn't just a language, it's culture. The way you speak, your tone and expression are a part of that language. You learn how to behave in that certain culture and new things. Always ask for help from others and be open minded. You'll be able to speak, write and listen to a language fast. Edit: I'm also planning to study abroad in Korea. It'll be a challenge and really out of my comfort zone. But I know I won't regret making this decision later on.

I forgot all of my German when I was in the US for a bit during an exchange year in highschool (it had been declining before that as well, cause all my freetime was english books/movies/internet etc and then it moved to thinking/ dreaming in english as well. When I was in the US i could not use German. (Passively understanding was fine of course) I once had to write an email for example. I couldn't remember the simplest words. After 30 min staring at the screen I wrote it in English and put it through a translator. I also couldn't talk to my little sister for example, cause she didn't speak English yet. My german was completely gone and after returning to Germany it took me a few months to become reasonably fluent again. But since I still mainly think in English my German is a bit weird nowadays and I quite often don't know words. And thats just 2 languages xD (I needed a second foreign language for 5 years to qualify for high school graduation, but I took Latin and never paid attention and was always just barely above failing, so that doesn't count.) I am learning Chinese now though... cause I am doing a gap hear teaching English in Kindergarten in China. My Chinese definitely isn't as good as hers. It is good enough to order food...

This is really inspiring! I love that you really are not afraid of making mistakes, you just give each language your best shot. It really helps learning languages when you just dive into them without the fear of saying something that may be incorrect. I usually don't feel scared talking in different languages, except for Japanese. Probably because I love that one so much that I want to be perfect at it.. which as a consequence makes me really shy in conversations and holds me back from progressing faster!

That's very reassuring, thank you! I think I have all the vocab in my brain somewhere, it just takes a while to "fetch" the word if I'm having a conversation. In reverse, when someone is speaking to you first, it's a lot easier. Your Korean and Japanese pronunciation are amazing! Indonesian may seem easy at first, but even the natives struggle with it on college-level education because we normally speak our own local language outside of formal settings.
@kokos12093 жыл бұрын
I am Serbian and this is so relatable. Serbian is extremely difficult even for native speakers and you'll never hear a native speaker tell a totally grammatically correct sentence lol. The worst part is that majority of people don't even realize they are making grammar mistakes because they have been speaking that way their whole life and nobody really cares if you make grammar mistakes so I guess that's a plus for foreigners who want to learn Serbian. Also, vocabulary waries a lot from region to region. Sometimes even me, a native speaker can't understand what another native speaker is saying.
@alifrahimi47013 жыл бұрын
If they speak local languages, that probably means their native languages are their local languages, NOT Indonesian, most Indonesians don't speak Indonesian natively
@Punyulada2 жыл бұрын
I think what a lot of non-maritime Southeast Asians do not realise (not sure about Malaysia, but definitely true about Indonesia and the Philippines) is that Bahasa Indonesia and Filipino are not languages majority of the population natively speak -- most people in these two countries are native speakers of a local language (as I am, I speak a local language of Sumatra as my native language) and the "national language" is a lingua franca intended to serve as an intermediary language people in the country use to communicate with each other especially when their native languages are so divergent. Add to this that the Indonesian side of my family has not lived in Indonesia in a few generations, and my Bahasa Indonesia functional skill is virtually non-existent: I can understand both written formal and informal Indonesian to a certain extent, but actually speaking it? Udah.

Actually she made some small errors on a basic lvl in what she said,but that's fair enough,considering that at that time she hadn't really been using the language for some time,from what she said. And by saying that she has this little difficulty having conversations with French people,she might've meant strictly understanding what they say to her. 'Cause idk about her,but for me French is still very difficult to understand when it's spoken at a faster/regular-ish pace and I don't need to have my mind occupied with half as many languages as she does

@@Riot076 moi aussi ! MDR I've got no problem in reading and writing; but when it comes to listening, I have a really hard time trying to keep up with their pace. And then there's their contractions, I don't get their contractions half the time and they're doing it so often. Also, I seem to struggle with indentifying the boundary between two words hence I'm entirely lost for a couple of words when that happens. Guess it'll come with practice.
