That's a really important thing that you've mentioned: when you really speak a language you don't only say words ands sentences but you think the way natives do! I think this is essential!

That's really helpful. I feel listening to the real talk ( no matter it's news or talk show or even advertisement ) really help me improve and maintain my foreign language. But I didn't feel the same way when listening to songs. I was told that some people learned certain language by listening to the songs in that language, but it was just not working for me. I could be so distracted by the melody and paid little attention to the lyrics, let alone some lyrics are in broken grammar and just confuse me.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial8 жыл бұрын
Singing along songs, or rap songs is a great way to improve your pronunciation, but it is impossible to learn a language that way. There's like only 50 - 100 words per song. That is really very little.

The more languages you speak, the harder it gets. Especially when it comes about similar languages such as Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese
@milanpaudel96247 жыл бұрын
on the contrary, more you learn its gets more easier.
@carlosochoa47152 жыл бұрын
Milan Plaudel. You are completely wrong. Initially you learn similar languages faster, then you struggle with mixing them up. Best example is Spanish vs Portuguese. Sometimes I still do Portuñol a few times when I speak Portuguese (my Spanish is stronger). Add Italian and it will be worse.
@carlosochoa47152 жыл бұрын
Alex both yes and no. The more you speak the faster you'll learn new languages but you will also struggle to maintain them.

Combining two activities at a time is a really useful tip as you have mentioned. Enjoying the process of learning instead of expecting an idealized result always works.What I admire about polyglots is that they are independent thinkers. Most of them have their own way of learning or practising a new language.I only speak four languages and want to learn more of course. But I know deep down in my heart if I was living in Europe this learning process would be totally different... like being able to travel without a need of a visa☺️and to communicate with other people. Listenin,reading also works for me but talking face to face with native speakers is essential I believe. I congratulate you for your hard work, talent and dedication... Peace from İstanbul to all the language enthusiasts,polyglots and humble, intelligent people...🙋🙏

A way you described, Vladimir, seems to be a bit passive meantime, for me anyway, the hardest pice in keeping language on high level of fluency is to maintain being creative in it what is practice means to speak, construct sentences (written as well). For me, best work conversations but there's a question: how to find enough time, it's pretty hard when I know just 2 foreign languages and been learning another 2, so I guess it would be impossible to try this with 19. I guess we would gladly all hear they above few learnt languages it doesnt require constant practice but becomes all the time avalible skill :') But the more time elaps, the more I notice that my learnt languages become poorer and simplified, unfortunately.

Hello vlad - very much enjoying your content you put out! I'm learning my first foreign language as a native English speaker. You've said that in learning Italian you just picked up 'the old man and the sea' and began just translating every word you didn't know. As a beginner this would seem quite challenging to me. Is there a particularly technique to reading novels to get a grounding in a foreign language i.e. the particular story, is it in first person etc - thanks again, and no worries if you can't reply
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial8 жыл бұрын
Hello David. Thank you for the comment. The Old man and the sea was not an ideal choice to be honest, because it was full of fishing terminology, but I chose it because I knew the English version pretty well and thought it would be easier for me to read in Italian - and it was. Italian is really not that hard for English speakers and I think very suitable for extensive and intensive reading studies. It is a very transparent language in the sense that it contains so many cognates that a lot of sentences simply make sense even if you don't speak Italian at all. Also, its spelling is very regular, what you read is what you say and the pronunciation, save the trilled "r" is not that difficult either. You will not sound as a native speaker of course, but people will understand you. I like reading, because you are not limited by anything only your free time - you don't need a teacher, conversation partner, don't need to follow a class schedule etc. Maybe you can use intensive and extensive reading as a supplement to your studies and try to figure out Italian on your own, treat it like a riddle. I like this approach much more than having someone tell me all the rules that are in the language. You can read about them of course, I just like to discover them as they appear naturally either in regular speech or books.
@davidbest34088 жыл бұрын
Cheers Vlad, I appreciate your well detailed response. I like the idea of a riddle and have found that going through course books to be extremely tedious in how you are presented with a canned dialog with lashings on grammar on top. In a sense, working from the top down approach seems more effective,no? I'm armed with a copy of io e te' here which I have read in English before so for now I'm gonna throw away the course books and start on this. I would hope that you produce a language course in the future, Vlad. I'm sure it would be a whole lot more useful than some of the guides available out there that focus way to heavily on themes i.e. fruits and veg, items of clothing...Is that something we can expect from you ? :D
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial8 жыл бұрын
Actually yes. I would love to:) Just today I had a one hour brainstorm session with my good friend who is a world class tennis coach to try to find out what the parallels are between movement learning and language learning and see what he uses in his coaching that I could use in my teaching. The goal would then me to somehow implement all that into my course. I would like to make the first course in Mandarin though, I don't know how attractive that would be. I realize this will be a huge task so I was even thinking of starting a fundraising campaign. I'll try to do a bit of planning and see what I can do.

@FINcLoAk8 жыл бұрын
Well explained! Personally i try to approach the languages like that. Still a novice what comes to learning or actually speaking languages. More like "absorbing" than learning... Keep up the good work mr. 🙏🏼 btw. Do you ever counter the situation where you struggle to find words in Slovak. Perhaps even have forgotten totally? Because of maintaining the level with multiple languages. Or the word pops first into your mind in different language.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial8 жыл бұрын
Hello. Of course it happens. Maybe not totally forget a word, but suddenly not know how to say it. It happens to everyone. It's enough to go abroad for a few months and not use your native language.

Hello Vladimir! I find your channel interessting. 😀 Well my mother language is german. I think i speak a good english. Well the russian language.... i have only basic knowledge there.... probably there is no possibility for me to speak it and like a blockade... we had to learn it at school. However I find it wonderful what you can do. And i hope you could show a bit how you maintane your knowledge in all those languages. 😀 Like telling us something about a book, you have read. Like the introduction of a book in the languages it was written? Or you could do a Interview with a native speaker in his or her languages about a cultural thing. In a way i would like to see, how you do all these things. Well it is just an idea, if you want to do it. 😀

Hi Marina. Danke sehr:) You have to search the web a bit and ask around. I prefer national radios and TV stations as they tend to be the most professional ones. I just listen to all talkshows I can find on the websites of these national TVs or radios for a few hours and choose the ones I like the most. As for looking for native speakers, I luckily have enough friends who are native speakers of the languages I speak, but there is a website called italki.com which I use from time to time too.

I think a good way to maintain multiple languages would be to think in a different language every day. Like, one day you could think in Italian and then the next day French and the next day Spanish and just keep doing that until you've thought in every language you know each day and then you can circle back to Italian

Thank you very much:) I have 2 native languages and the rolling "r" is in both of them so I didn't have a problem with this sound and unfortunately do not know how to explain to you too well how to pronounce it. I heard that one way of getting it right is to start slowly saying "d" and then "t" and saying them faster and faster until you get the "r". I don't know if it works though. Just heard someone say it:)

As you mostly refer to official languages any thoughts about multiple dialects from the languages you already know like Mandarin and Taiwanese Hakka?
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial7 жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm not sure I understand your question too well. You mean specifically the Taiwanese version of Hakka (台式客家話)? Or Taiwanese Hokkien (台式福建話/台式閩南話/台語)? Or Just Hokkien in general (福建話/閩南話)? Either one you meant, I think Hokkien, Hakka and Mandarin are languages and not dialects and I would do the same thing I said with the video regardless of whether it would be a dialect or a language I think.
