Why he was ever hired given his criminal background is beyond me. Once Miya complained to her employer, the matter should have been immediately investigated and he should not have been given access to her apartment. I hope the family sues the property management group for the apartment.. As a women who has been stalked, it is a terrifying experience that creates constant fear and anxiety for the victim. It should be taken more seriously as any other threat to personal safety.

What was his criminal background? If that was mentioned in the video I missed it. But people with criminal records have to have jobs, and low-skilled jobs have to be filled, so it would have to be something very serious to reject someone from a job like that. However, I agree that they should have investigated urgently and prevented him from being able to enter her apartment as soon as she complained.

@@icturner23 He threw a weight through the window of a woman who rejected him while he worked at another apartment complex. Yes, people with criminal pasts who have served their time and have been rehabilitated deserve jobs, but a violent predatory criminal like him should not have had his position. How was he rehabilitated? He should never have had the access he did and given his past, the management company should have taken her complaints more seriously.

@@icturner23 I'm "vulnerability cleared" in Canada and thought\ it has nothing to do with my maintenance job (a building full of ladies my age) I do not want to have access to ANY apt. without someone with me at all times. Maintenance does not need easy access to someone's apartment: the fire dept. has access keys and police will just kick the door in on any "wellness" check by an ambulance team. As a former maintenance tech I can say it was absurd how much access to residents apartments they have. The management company had very strict rules about privacy but very rarely enforced them as they were headquartered in a whole different state. The demand for maintenance jobs is very high so they'll hire just about anyone these days. edit: Rest In Peace Miya, the apartments could of did something to prevent this, perhaps they should be held accountable as well.

A coworker of mine just told me about when she was in her twenties, her neighbor was murdered like this. R*p3d and k!11ed by a maintenance man with a rap sheet a mile long. She believes the only reason why it wasn’t her was because she had a German shepherd who was fiercely protective of her and would always growl and snarl at the maintenance man in particular-there would be no way he could get in there with that dog. I suggest to all single women, especially if you live in a risky area, you MUST get a dog also, ADT so you ALWAYS know when your house is opened. At the very least, a very loud, aggressive chihuahua. Preferably a shepherd or Doberman.

Really glad you covered the types of stalkers, Dr. Grande! So important. The police aren't very helpful when it comes to these crimes, unfortunately. A woman in my city who had video of her stalker breaking into her apartment didn't get any help. The cops finally did something when she had to shoot the stalker when he broke in again. The book, 'The Gift of Fear" talks about how the police don't help enough and the author, Gavin de Becker, has been working to try to change that. He came up with MOSAIC Threat Assessment Tool. I hope things get better in this area. I also wonder how voyeurism can play a part in stalking

Just thought you'd like to know that they want people to end up shooting somebody, that's why the cops don't do anything in most jurisdictions. The trouble of this too is they are overwhelmed with requests and understaffed. I dealt with someone harassing and knowing a lot of my personal info. At some point my friend yelled at me and said I need to call detective because I should not wait until someone kills me for them to analyze what happened. Long story short… I spoke to a detective in city of LA and was told they are understaffed and unless this person has threatened my life and I have full proof of that, nothing they could do to even start investigation. Per their words they got a lot of cases like this and could not tend to each one and would focus on those whose lives were in immediate danger. Problem is stuff likes this can turn quickly and your stalker can show up randomly etc. Anyhoz, it’s super complicated .:(

Thank you Dr. Grande for presenting this stalking case. It illustrates why employers must screen potential employees and look into their criminal background. I worked for a grocery store and a jewelry store that both did extensive background checks to make sure that I was honest and would not steal. I even had to pass a psychological test for honesty. In this case, the property mgt company should be sued for negligent hiring and supervision.
@TheBOG3

Wow! To work in a grocery store? I had a marijuana conviction, applyed to Kroger and filled out the application honestly. When the manager read the application and asked me about it, I told him what happened. He then proceeded to rip up my application in front of me and handed me a new one. He told me to fill it out again but this time to leave the conviction off the application. I was hired. This was in West Bloomfield, Michigan, a known wealthy area of one of the highest income per capita counties in the entire U.S.!!! I guess if you're a good looking 20 year old, who still looks like a teenager then that's all that matters to them.
@whodoesntluvpapas
@whodoesntluvpapas Жыл бұрын
That's incredible. It makes sense (for the jewelry store) I guess. I always wondered how they vet people and deem them trustworthy. I think this method could be applied to several other occupations, too. That being said, I took some "personality" tests while applying to two separate places. I was completely honest on the first one, and didn't get a call back. Then when I realized I was taking the same test again later (the 2 places where owned by the same company, which I didn't know at the time) I totally lied and just answered with what I thought they wanted to hear. Worked like a charm, got the job.

Why on earth would a management company give maintenance or security the ability to enter someone’s apartment at any time without their knowledge or consent?! If you’re going to have work done, that access needs to be time-limited and with verbal consent from the occupant. Stalkers are scary enough, don’t make it easier!

I had a stalker. We were just friends through a Facebook group. He’s 20 years older than me; his children are my age. Also, he was married. He doxxed me and called my home phone, wrote letters to me, I blocked him on my phone but he would call with a different number so I had to keep blocking him. He would leave the most disturbingly deranged and violent VMs. I saved all of that and tried to file a restraining order twice but since he hadn’t physically harmed me (and he claimed to be disabled) they weren’t granted. I changed my phone number and moved and canceled all social media. He harassed my now husband and his family, threatened to go to my mom’s house. You name it, he threatened it. Stories like hers are so tragic. She was barely older than my daughter. Her family must be devastated. It breaks my heart. I wish there was more that could be done to keep women safe.

Maintenance came in to repair it while I was asleep, maybe had to go get something, so they left with everything a mess and no note or anything. I was very uncomfortable with them walking by my open bedroom while I slept. I also had to pee and the toilet was in the tub!

Hi Dr. Grande: thank you for all you do: I really enjoy your videos. There's a case in Mississippi right now regarding a young man (by the name of Cory Patterson) who unlawfully commandeered a plane at the airport he worked at (as a lineman), threatened to crash it into the Tupelo Walmart initially, but then kept flying it in a rural area for another 4+ hours before crash landing in a field this past Saturday. Many people initially speculated this to be some kind of bonafide terror attack, but since then it has appeared that it was seemingly due to some kind of a suicidal mental breakdown: as all family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances who have commented on the case have said he had a clean background: was an upstanding, amiable, loving person, and that this was completely out of character for him. Additionally, police and a few of his family members got ahold of him by cell phone while he was flying and were able to talk him into not carrying out his threat (was reported that his family was the most effective in persuading him). Police then had a private pilot on the phone that was instructing Mr. Patterson on how to land the plane at a nearby runway, but Patterson aborted this attempt shortly before almost landing and continued flying. Around 30 minutes before the end of his flight, and while he was clearly running out of fuel, Patterson managed to post on Facebook that said he loved his family, it wasn't their fault, and that he never actually intended to hurt anyone, ending with "Goodbye." However, not too long after, he miraculously was able to land in a field unharmed and with relatively minor damage to the plane. He was apprehended without incident and is facing charges of grand larceny and making terroristic threats. What has been interesting is that the response from the public has been quite varied: with many people taking on a sympathetic view of Patterson giving prayers and other encouragement, and well wishes for him to get mental help: while many other people condemn him vehemently proclaiming that his actions were so terrorizing that an explanation of a mental breakdown was no excuse in the slightest and that he deserves no sympathy and should get life in prison (or something along those lines/similar sentiments). Other people's perspectives have been a mix of those two responses to one degree or another. For me, what is interesting is here we have someone who was intending to commit suicide in such a public and potentially destructive way but through some miraculous circumstances survived: and now there's a chance to find out what was going through his head: especially regarding the threat to crash the plane into Walmart. It makes me think of the incident in Washington State in August 2018, where Richard Russell (another person with a relatively clean background with the act being out of character) commandeered a passenger jet and flew it around erratically before crashing it into a sparsely populated island, killing him. When things like that happen, it is really unfortunate that no one had a chance to evaluate such a person and find out what is going on in their head and how to help them: but here, that same type of person has survived! so I am very eager to find out what was going on with this individual. Is it possible that he truly never intended to crash it into the Walmart? however it seemed clear that he wanted to commit suicide so if he was feeling that hopeless (plus whatever other dysfunction that was going on in his head) than I could see how maybe he didn't care at that point and was going to do it possibly to take out angst/hurt/rejection he had experienced in life. Or was it just to get attention to shake severe depression/feelings of loneliness/mental numbness associated with his mental illness? And then, one also has to take into account that he could have carried out with his threat even after talking with police/his family but he chose not to- which I think some credence needs to be given (shows that the good in him/rational thought was able to win over his previous destructive mindset and intentions). I wonder what your perspective is on this regarding these factors: the psychology of someone who is suicidal and tries to do it in such a dramatic and public way, the reasons why someone in such a state and who has no history of violence towards others would make an extremely harmful threat, whether such a threat is always fully intended or more a ploy to get perceivably needed attention, and how much of these actions can be attributed to true maliciousness or mental/emotional dysfunction that warrants more leniency. All the best.

People don't seem to have a lot of empathy for women who live alone. I've witnessed neighbors and hoa meetings where eyes were rolled and paranoia was claimed in reference to a single woman complaining about maintenance men. I've had lawnmowers let themselves up to the gated upper part of my deck and pop up 6 feet away from where i was in my kitchen in my pjs. For no reason. Another time, a landscaper asked me if I live alone and if i work, and if i work from home. I just made a mumbling noise and reported it to my hoa. They ignored me and asked if maybe they had seen tree branches to clean up. No reason to open my gate! Women, regardless of how your landlords may respond, still report it to them and let others in your life know. I'm sorry we all have to deal with this.

ONE THING about the Anti-Stalker strategies I have to disagree with. Taking a "Self-Defense Course" is just a bad placebo that MAKES people feel empowered, but does a poor job of preparing one for a combative situation. I have to insist that one should train in a Martial Art seriously, for about 1 1/2 to 2 years minimum. Regardless of the style or school one chooses, training holistically in a Martial Art will better train the mind and senses on how to be mindful of their surroundings & avoid dangerous situations. Be well.

Isn't possible that Armando may also have had FASDE? I have worked with these types of young people and noted their impulsivity, simplistic way of thinking that sometimes leads to funny outcomes when committing crimes. As for stalking I certainly have had a stalker pursue me since we were both Grade 9 classmates. Several years ago I read a true story written by a British professor who had a persistent female stalker try to ruin his career and walk right in front & the side of his house frequently and stare at him through his windows! How does the mind of a stalker work and when does this type of behaviour tend to start in terms of age?

This is such a sad case that could been handled with greater care by the management company. I use to be a property managers and a lot of owners/ management companies would just hire anyone at certain points. Unfortunately I had to work with ppl who had been on the Sx offender list or ex cons. They would make the same mistakes they once had again. I decided to quit after realizing the company would doing nothing if it saved/ earn money for their business. On my last day I even had to preform a tourniquet due to one of my residents being shot at by a random drug user. Had a mental break downs for up to a year after leaving that job. I was sxulized a lot and even touched without my consent. It's not an easy field to be in. There needs be much more Tennant Protect laws. I always suggest residents have cameras in their apartments.

I had 2 situations when i was stalked. The first was when i was a teenager in my home town and went for a walk in the park. A strange man kept walking after me and i wasn't sure if he was fallowing me ir not. I decided to stop and face him (from a safe distance of course) and he tried to hide his face. I returned to my walk and noticed he was fallowing me still.. so kept walking through streets were i could find lots of people and searched for a policeman. Fortunately i found one and told him what was happening and pointed directly to the stalker, and the man runned away. They couldn't get him but Police was positive he wasn't familiar and wasn't from my town. The second situation was nasty. I was already an adult and was working. I met a stranger in the internet (i usually only would chat with people from other countries because i like to learn about different cultures). This time i was fooled and the guy was from my country and i already had given more details about my life than i should: he knew my first and last name and my job. That was enough for him to find me, and believe me he had to phone to every single similar institution in my country to locate me, but he did it. How i found out that he located me? He went to my workplace trying to pass as an old friend from university. Fortunately that day i was not at work and my colegue got suspicious. He told me the man was much older than me so he couldn't believe he knew me from university. I told my colegue what happened and we alerted security so the man couldn't enter our building and i had a special place to park my car in ways i wasn't in danger. But the man didn't gave up. He found my personal phone number and sent messages all the time (i didn't answer) and he kept sending flowers to my workplace... and i got so stressed that my personal life went down the hole. My partner wasn't understanding and end up leaving me and even blaming me. I was alone and in fear and authorities couldn't acuse the stalker of nothing wrong they said. I had to change job, city, contacts and made a complain to PJ (it's like your FBI). I sent them an e-mail explaining what was happening to me and told them if i ever go missing you must look after this guy. I think i gained safety changing everything in my life but i know that if he wanted he could locate me again because in my country, there's not even 2000 persons with the same job i have.. 10 years passed and fortunately never heard from him. I don't know if PJ did something about it or not. But i still feel always suspicious about everybody. I hate stalkers from my guts.

I hate to say this, but property management is one of those fields where so much goes wrong. I know people who have had guns and knives pulled on them, and I know employees who have characteristics consistent with personality disorders. They continue to work at the properties where they are assigned, no matter if they are mediocre and make life hell for the people around them - simply because the company too often feels that it’s too hard to replace them. This is especially true for maintenance. Thank you for covering this sad story. It’s horrible that this young woman lost her life. I wonder if the property management made any policy changes after this? Sadly, I doubt it.

Stalking is a subject everyone should be aware of so thank you for posting your analysis. I lost a work friend to spousal stalking at the end of the 90s. It is difficult to prove and stop stalking incidents; however, being (somewhat) prepared can make all of us safer. Installing monitoring devices in our homes and apartments assists in reporting someone (such as maintenance personnel in this case) coming in/out of our living quarters while we are away and offers assurance no one has entered and/or is hiding/waiting for our return since we're able to monitor any activity while away. Simple tools such as a high lumens, mini flashlights (200 lumens) and a pen offer some defense if needed, that is, the flashlight can temporarily blind an attacker and a pen (God forbid) can be used to strike if attacked. Unfortunately, we do live in a world where we are forced to learn and take protective measures. After my work friend was shot in the parking lot of our workplace, advisors came in and told us what "could have been done" although she had reached out to the courts over and over again without getting any real help. It's easy to say what one should have done after the fact and then it's too late.

He told me " God told me, we were to be together, to be married." I told him "God told me to run and get away from you." This man would come to my place of work. The police had to be called. He would park outside my parents home ( I lived at home). He would come to the door and ask to see me. He would call me, follow me. Finally, I called the police, they asked if there was a weapon on the property?. I said yes. They told me to show the man the weapon, threaten him about what would happen if he ever came back. Then the officer told be to find another church to go to. Sure enough the man came back and I did what the officer said . My sister and I left the First Baptist church of Downey and went to a Baptist church in Belmount Shores. Never heard or saw this man again. Truly a frightening experience.
