Colleen, I had tickets to the Denver show-and I promise you, anyone who buys tickets to your shows genuinely loves and cares for you. Your vlogs saved me, they got me through my 2020 pregnancy and 2021 postpartum depression that I had to spend isolated at home during covid. You got me through 2 years of my life… I will happily wait 2 months to see you once you have had a chance to heal and rest!! You are incredible.

Yes!!! And, for me, it doesn’t have to be a favourite song. It doesn’t even have to be in a language I can speak/understand. When I hear opera singers hit really high notes and their voice is so powerful as they sing those notes, it makes me feel like I am being lifted from my seat! Every hair on my body stands up and I simultaneously feel huge amounts of joy while I sob!!!! That’s what the power/magic of music can do for me!

I have synesthesia and I see full blown masterpieces when I hear music I connect with, colors I've never seen before or can't recreate on a pallet from music that effects my spirit mind and body. Legit full body chills when harmonies hit the right places. I have synesthesia too. Some songs almost “hurt” to listen to. I love them but don’t listen often because of the feeling. Also when I play my flute, some notes have a color. Funny though because that only happens when playing. No colors while listening/singing. “Hurting” happens in any format.

Hi colleen, the way you describe how music affects you is the same feeling I get when i talk about my special interest like books for example. I have adhd and have a hyper fixation on books. I feel like my body can’t handle the love and admiration I have for authors/characters or book in general. I don’t get that way about music but I think it’s common for typically neurodivergent people to feel this way about something they love so dearly they just can’t contain their joy and excitement.

I definitely feel that way when I listen to my most favorite songs but it’s rare, it has to be I’m having a good day and it’s the first time I’m listening to the song or if I’m dissociating it will happen way more. But I also get that feeling when I’m talking to the people I love and we both can totally understand what is going on in each others mind. It’s like both of brain waves are on the same frequency. I know so weird but I get that feeling more when taking to the people I love than listing to music. 15:02 I love you so much! And I’m so sorry that your voice is doing bad right now but it’s only 6 weeks of so many more years and six weeks from now your babies will do so many more incredible things! @@jazmynecrowe441 I don't think I'm neurodivergent, but I've experienced this (although maybe to a lesser extent)! I especially feel this way when listening to a rock song I really like, like I have this sort of elation that makes me want to run and explode with energy. This is really a great feeling as someone who experiences a lot of numbness in other aspects; it helps me feel alive when I often do not. :)

Hey Colleen. Long time admirer of you. I got nodes my first year starting a bfa in musical theatre. I spent my entire first semester of college not talking. The hardest part was losing something that was my “thing” for my whole life up to that point. The one thing I was good at and built into my personality I now could not do. It was absolutely heart wrenching for me. I journaled and meditated a lot! A LOT! Therapy obviously. But I just want you to know that my voice therapist said “your lucky you got it so young, usually is happens when people are already established in their careers and it hits them so hard emotionally they can’t handle the weight!” So I want you to know this happens to ALL of us. You are not worthless because you cannot sing you are much more complex than that!! 🥰 You are an excellent singer and you WILL sing again. Looking back I realize that what happened to me was necessary to learn going forward in my life. I no longer hold guilt and I wish someone could’ve provided me those words!! So I just want to tell you!! We love you, be easy on yourself! ❤️

I’m not much of a commenter, but I just want to say that you’re not being dramatic and you’re honestly taking this whole ordeal so so well. Singing is my whole life (although it’s not my career; I’m a stay at home mom/ part time behavioral health care worker) but it definitely is my passion. Especially in college and high school it was my whole world. But junior year of high school I completely lost my 3.5 octave range to just a couple of middle notes for about 6 weeks. It was terrifying and I was incredibly depressed. I had always been a very high soprano and did all my school’s competitions and was planning on going for state that year. I cried about it A LOT and my livelihood didn’t even depend on it like yours does! Anyway, I went and saw a laryngologist and thankfully I didn’t have nodes but even though I’m a cis woman, I had a voice change. And my voice dropped to an alto. So I had to completely relearn how to sing, and redefine my identity. Anyway, this was super long and likely you won’t see it, but I just want to validate and empathize that I really understand how devastating this is, and you’re doing amazing.

I agree! A very similar thing happened to me, except i did have nodes and I was SOOO sad i'd never be able to sing again. (&it was just church choir and i was the female lead for the youth kids) I never had to try to hit a note it just happened. Then i had to re-learn how to sing with it and vocal exercises like shes doing now. Im still kinda sad about it, cuz i cant hit the high notes i used to, BUT i can hit lower notes that i wasnt able to before! :) Its about staying positive, and adapting.

Same with my voice. I have a high soprano & dropped to an alto between like 7th & 9th grade. It was after an illness that included laryngitis & maybe hormones too, idk because I never saw a Dr or anything but I was soooo sad & ended up dropping choir because I lost confidence in my singing

Totally feel you here on the effects of music. Especially musical theater. If been into musicals since I was little, following all the actors along their musical journeys. Just went to nyc and saw 5 shows in 4 days and they left me breathless. Like I fall in love with the shows and the actors in them. It’s just a beautiful thing to see your theater idols ya know. Keep your deep feelings going girl! And get well soon!

Yes, I feel that same way about music (especially my son's music). I worked in theater for many years and there is nothing like literally feeling the vibrations in the air of the music and absorbing the energy of the performers. Tap dancing does that to me too, I have actually gotten so emotional watching a master tap that I cried. It's ART, that's what art is meant to do - to send your soul out of your body into a realm of wonderment.

Hi Colleen! I totally love hearing you talk about the feeling you get when you listen to music that you love. I don't get the same overwhelming inside-out feeling that you describe, i get more of an excited, warm , floaty buzzing feeling in my belly and in my cheeks, and it makes me feel like i'm floating on a cloud. It's so cool to me that humans feel music in such different ways!

I am so sorry about your voice! You need to know that this six weeks will be very hard for you and provide you the space and time you will need to transform, grow and come out the other side. These trying times contain your medicine.....what you will need to develop further as a performer and person. Trust this, Colleen! You got this! Accept it and know that there are so many pearls to come out of this. Introspection and silence helps us to grow!!!! I am proud of you! I am rooting for you! Embrace the path!

Hi Colleen, I am so devastated for you. As an opera singer, I know exactly how horrendous any kind of vocal injury can be. It’s so frustrating and demoralising not to be able to sing for any length of time. I feel so awful for you! Just know that this is not permanent. Your vocal chords will thank you for this period of rest, and I guarantee your voice will come back stronger than ever! Any sort of straw exercises will really help (as I’m sure you already know) & the semi occluded vocal tract exercises that I’m sure you also know about. Also when your voice is coming back, singing through everything in that semi occluded position (through a straw or blowing through pursed lips) should really get everything to work again! SOVT stuff helped me so much last summer when I was singing with little to no speaking voice and on steroids and antibiotics… I could actually sing! It was like magic. I’m sure your coaches will help you with all of this, and also you probably already know a lot of it. Much love and solidarity. ❤

Seriously, ! take the doctors advice! Sending prayers. God bless. Yes. When a piece of music touches your soul, brings tears to your eyes, and it feels like it's tearing you down and building you up at the same time. That the world is a better place for that 3 minutes and everything is alright at this moment. That's what music can do. Go Maisy Jo! GO! So proud of you.

No you're definitely not alone Colleen 😂 That intense urge and sensation your entire body feels, from feet to head, from head to toe, when your favorite song comes on, or a song that holds a lot of weight, and the passion and love you feel for music just oozes out of you and moves your body parts in uncontrollable ways? Yes, I've definitely felt it. I completely understood, my body has gotten goosebumps, my back, my thighs and arms feel it, the hairs on my neck stand up, I definitely am a passionate music lover so I can understand. Also, I dance a lot, so I'm almost by nature I just *have* to move my body. Even just listening to powerful lyrics that makes you emotional. Or instruments and sounds. Music is so powerful. In any way shape or form, it holds a lot of power. It's a beautiful thing, you're not alone I definitely feel you

you put into words what I've been trying to describe about music for YEARS. it's why I send people I care about Spotify playlists as part of every gift I give, why I randomly share lyrics/chord progressions on my social media stories, & why if I hear a song that perfectly describes an experience or reminds me of someone, even if we haven't talked in years, I send it.

I absolutely feel what you feel with music. I also understand about not being able to sing along to a song if you’re sick or your voice is injured. It’s awful!! Love you Colleen! Praying your voice gets all healed up really soon!

The description of your full body reaction to music at the end fits really well with neurodivergence and increased sensitivity to various vibrations and sounds. This shows up with both ADHD and the Autism spectrum, and can be expressed through different areas for different people. It really shows the spectrum of neurodivergence for humans and I love all of the variation! This is a big part of what makes the human body so fascinating to me.

I have quite a few songs that I experience viscerally to the point of wanting to either “live inside of them” or “inject them into my body”. It’s so funny because my best friend and I were just talking about this a few weeks ago and we started sharing songs that made us feel as you were describing. We talked about how not even full songs can make us feel this way, but sometimes it’s a single line, ad-lib or instrument that triggers something in our entire existence that gets us excited. I hope everyone gets to experience that feeling on some kind of level because it is so spiritual and so amazing.
