Again…. Amazing, entertaining, educational, top notch quality work dude! Like everything else in life I do not believe that there are gurus at anything. What you see is years of experience, practice and tons of learning from your mistakes. I know first hand. I’m an engineer by trade and have 26 years doing this and have seen just about everything so they pay me great money for my experience. That cannot be had in a day or at school. Thanks man

Chris we used to do a similar type job back in the 80's. They had one of those rolls crack after a piece of cerawool ended up between the shaft and roll somehow. Never saw anything like that before or since...

Hey Chris, question for ya. Have you ever experienced any internal stress issues while machining? Some of those billets are significant and I'd think every once in a while you would cross one that starts acting up the more you machine. Have a good weekend. Thanks for bringing us along.
@ChrisMaj
@ChrisMaj Жыл бұрын
If you mean like cracks then no, but sometimes I'll be roughing some big piece and the shaft is perfectly straight. Then you do some different material, you take one small cut and the run-out is all over the place. It has to do a lot with the type of material, heat treatment and stress relief.

It's no secret. I was born and raised in Poland, did almost 3 years of trade school all manual machining, didn't finish it though, cause my parents decided to move to US. Got here at 17, went to high school for 2 years, luckily I even graduated, but I knew college wasn't my thing and with only 2 years of English, college would have been hard. For couple of years I have worked here and there not really thinking about machining. Then I ended up in this shop, mostly manual machines. They had one vertical cnc machine which they got me running after a year or so. Poland is all metric so I had to learn imperial. Forward 25 years, and I'm still in the same shop but almost all cnc machines. I think I have gone through 4 lathes and that vtl in my videos. I know it's a long time in one shop but I like it. We do a lot of different stuff as you can tell from the videos, it's only 15 minutes drive from my house whichisplus. No one is breathing on my neck, no crazy production work. So yeah, that's about it.

Oglądać fachowca przy pracy to sama przyjemność. Mam dwa pytania. Pierwsze, czy 4340 obrabia się dużo ciężej, niż 4140? Mówimy o Q+T do 34-36 HRC. Drugie, zastaniawiam się dlaczego wybrałeś akurat CNMG, a nie na przykład KNUX czy inną geometrię do ciężkiego toczenia zgrubnego. Czy wynika to z jej uniwersalności? Pozdrawiam serdecznie :)
@ChrisMaj
@ChrisMaj Жыл бұрын

Turning to a ± 0.025mm tolerance on a Ø384mm shaft .... that takes a pretty good machine - and a pretty good machinist with lots of experience (if you hit those tolerances that is:) No thanks, I wouldn't like that stress. Pity these tradesmen - in most societies - don't get the respect (or remuneration) they deserve... because of ignorance I suppose.

How long can you keep one cutting edge, before it fails in such hard material?
@ChrisMaj
