If your television doesn't support eARC, and you have an external device providing a Dolby Atmos AV signal, then couldn't you run that signal into your AVR via a HDMI cable, and allow it to act like a splitter by taking the audio portion of the signal, processing it, and then outputting the Dolby Atmos signal to the speakers, while allowing the video portion of the signal to pass on through and out to the television??? Also, I thought ARC could allow one to receive Dolby Atmos audio from streaming services that use the format, which includes Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, because those services embed Dolby Atmos in a Dolby Digital Plus stream, which ARC can handle.

I've tried to set my soundbar up exactly like you said but my LG TV and TCL soundbar don't get on. The annoying CEC keeps changing input when I try to watch a Blu-ray disc and CEC keeps renaming my set top box and Blu-ray player. Does ARC or eARC work for just plugging a game console directly into it, my experience is when I’m streaming from my PS4, the volume was so low (I had to double or even triple the volume compared to rabbit ear antennas). I don’t how many times I turn off my PS4 and it goes back to live tv and it’s literally screaming at me, and scared the crap out of me. I now have a PS5 and trying to set all of this up but not sure if it would even do anything without a sound bar, or if it will make the sound come out louder. Thoughts?

They COULD have made HDMI a superfast bidirectional audio and video pipeline from the start. But, it was originally more about copyright protection than usability and features. They keep rolling out features a little at a time to keep you buying new stuff. It's always been that way. HDMI was supposed to replace ALL the other connections, be SMART and simplify things.

ARC has one downside: its audio is limited to 5.1. So if your gear is not the new and more capable eARC, you kinda have to choose between great audio from your smart TV vs the great control functionality of CEC. Of course, if all your program sources are external to the TV this is not an issue…. but given the awesome capabilities of the new smart TVs, were I configuring a new system today I’d ensure that both the TV and the AVR were eARC.

@@DarkLordDeimos What is your use case for eARC? The main purpose for Audio Return Channel is the get audio from native display or device apps to "return" to your external audio source (A/V receiver, soundbar, etc.). In my case, all devices plug into my receiver and then video out to the TV (no eARC needed) except for my PS5. That goes direct to the TV to utilize HDMI 2.1 features like VRR. But, to get audio to my speakers, I utilize eARC to pass it through the TV and back down via the same HDMI cable that is already connected. Hello, thank you for the video. I have a question that maybe someone can help me with. I have ARC set on my Samsung TV (QN55Q80TAFXZA) to auto. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-NR727. I am running Bose Acoustimass 5.1. The problem is, when watching TV or movie, you can seldom hear a click in the receiver as if it is changing signal output, but then the voices get muffled and you only hear background music or sound effects. I go to the receiver and it changes automatically from say Dolby, to TX Movie, to Direct, etc.. I thought it was the receiver, so I swapped it out for the same one from another setup I have and it does the same thing. So I switched HDMI cables from the cable (Xfinity) box to the receiver, problem is still there. I moved the HDMI cable located in HDMI 1 from the TV to HDMI 2, same problem. My main system has no sound isses but I have a 7.1.2 setup with a Denon receiver. Any ideas how to fix? I was told to turn off CEC, but doing so did not change the sound issue. Thank you.

eARC is part of HDMI 2.1 standard, and HDMI 2.1 supports 4K@120hz (and also 8K@60hz). So if your TV and sound bar supports eARC and have ports marked "eARC" *you know* it supports 4K@120hz just fine. The only thing you have to make sure is to have a proper HDMI 2.1 cable plugged in your TV (eARC audio can run fine on just an HDMI 1.4 cable).

Hi Chris, amazing video. I wanted to share that while your approach for the Xbox series X and soundbar is correct for the HDMI connections there are some soundbars/TVs that are not compatible together and will cause a sound delay on the Xbox when trying to use Dolby Atmos. I experienced this when I bought a Samsung soundbar for my LG cx and Xbox series x. My tv would not let me use the audio Passthrough setting with the Samsung. I then returned the Samsung and bought an LG soundbar and now I can use the Passthrough setting and Dolby Atmos has no delay on my Xbox series x. Might be worth making a separate video for but people are having major problems with this.

Thank you for making this video cuz I've learned a lot! Unfortunately my theater system is so old (it's 27 years old) it still uses Optical for sound instead of ARC

In my experience, I have Pioneer receiver pioneer vsx rs320 5.1, year released 2009 only has optical audio input, so I decided to buy sony bdv-e2100 home teather 5.1 2018 year fabrication because it is HDMI ARC build in, My big surprise the pioneer vsx rs320 nine year older reproduce without lost of sound dolby digital plus and atmos format audio, transfering the back and heigth sound to the sorround sound speaker receiver, so no sound is lost and keeping wide audio dinamic range via Pass-Through in the tv. Meanwhile the sony bdv e2100 almost a soundbar with separated 5.1speaker lost sound in sorround speaker dolby digtal plus and atmos, inspite to be HDMI ARC build in, also it is not wide dinamic audio range capable, the sound is flat via PCM. So I disided to stay with the pioneer vsx rs320 becausa even has better effects movies sound than the sony bdv-e2100, I thinks the optical audio is capable in audio only needs good hardware to reproduce sounds, I still didn´t test earc so far. At the time I bought the pioneer vsx rs320 all receivers had only optical and coaxial audio and analagus either 5.1 or 7.1 and stated to be dolby digital plus bulid in. This was my source sound test www.demolandia.net/cinema/dolby-demo-trailers-hd/page-9.html

Thanks for making it sound very clear and simplified. I've always had trouble getting my system set up right. I current have a series X Xbox through a receiver that doesn't support HDR to a LG tv. I did just order a Samsung Premiere projector and am hoping I can go Xbox and other consoles straight to the projector and either ARC or optical cable to my receiver, so that I can use HDR.

If i use ARC from the TV to a converter the directly to my powered speakers, will the volume be controlled with the TV remote?

Ofc. Because there's no stupid ass standards on anything, And the biggest is type c. All this stuff just make everything so confusing. And I use optical because why the hell not. And my TV does support arc only but I never knew how to use it until now.

I really like ARC,I run it to my tv from my receiver and when I turn a device on the receiver switches to the input for that device,way different from when I was a kid and you had to jump through hoops to get everything setup,now it’s just one and done.

Fantastic video! eARC is really a life changer - I don't understand why people say it is 'cable management' to run your HDMI devices through a receiver just to connect to the TV. eARC handles everything flawlessly and with no distortion to the video signal by running it through an audio receiver/amp.
@RKDriver
@RKDriver Жыл бұрын
eARC has been a lifesaver. Only one remote needed like he said and with CEC enabled you control volume and power off/on. I've been swapping out remotes every few years when adding things like a Roku or new game console. Universal remotes used to be a must but not anymore. A good modern smart TV with eARC combined with a modern soundbar or Home Theater AVR eARC and all is fine. The only problem that still remains is getting certain codecs like Atmos, DTS or DTS-HD to pass from the TV to the sound device. I read that many TV manufactures now like LG no longer do DTS or DTS-HD and just pass the signal as PCM 5.1. Still sounds good but very confusing.

Great video! One thing that I didn’t realize until I got a TV with eArc and a soundbar with eArc is that eArc takes care of lip sync (audio moving not in sync with video) automatically. With Arc I had to mess with audio delays on my Shield, my LG TV, and my soundbar, and I could never get it perfect for all content. With eArc, everything stays in sync!

Question! You did a great job and my question is if I only have one HDMI arc in my tv and three regular HDMI do I need a splitter? I’m using a Apple TV 4K and AMBEO SOUNDBAR? What would you recommend to connect this to make it work right?

TV usually only have one eArc. connect Tv earc to eArc on soundbar...... IF your soundbar has HDMI Input(s), that's where you would want to plug in your Apple Tv.

You need a cable marked "High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet" (HDMI 1.4) for eARC to work, newer HDMI 2.0/2.1 cables will also work fine though

Very helpful and easy to follow , if you know the lingo , helped me with a question as I noticed a Denon receiver would glitch and loose video signal when switching back from smart tv streaming to the cable box on the receiver. I will bypass the receiver and plug everything into the tv inputs and simply use the E arc for sound . Thanks

Wrong!....I have my high end gaming PC hooked up to my TV via hdmi ...only way to get 4k and 120. However I lose atmos ..my tv only has an optical audio out. So I hooked up optical audio output to my receiver so I can get high quality audio however atmos only works with hdmi. The earc port is not an output it is only an input. So u can't do it.e earc ports r inputs not outputs. U can't hook hdmi into lets say input hdmi 4k 120 1 then use 2 the earc port as an output. No tv I have ever seen has an hdmi out..my tv is a 3 thousand dollar sony bravia purchased last year. Solution. U have to have a av receiver that has true 4k 120hz pass-through then you hook up PC to reciever ....then output from the receiver to the monitor. If you do it then way I described with out a 4k 120hz pasthrough then u instantly lose 120hz capability for video but will retain atmos. Can't have both.
