That store deserves kudos for utilizing that Betta system. Every store I have ever visited have Bettas in the cups, and I bet most die just sitting on the shelves as if they are dry goods.

JPOIII1985 yeah, you gotta offset that against the narrow range of stuff we have available and also the obscene prices we pay for things like cleaner shrimp, yellow tangs etc
@JPOIII19857 жыл бұрын
Yeah, good point. Like he said, I def appreciate a $30 price tag on cleaner shrimp a lot more after watching this haha
@DamienBuckley7 жыл бұрын
JPOIII1985 I hadn't actually realised until he mentioned it in the video that they don't allow Coral imports to Australia. I've been watching all the BRS & other videos & seeing everyone's tanks and lamenting the range of stuff you have available in the US. I just thought it was down to cost. The coral aquaculture industry is only in its infancy too. As a matter of interest, a blood red shrimp here will set you back A$180…
@billforigno7 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the ever elusive Gramma loreto! "Haha. Mate, I could probably order one in for you at about $120... on a good day," a Queensland store owner responded after I asked about the lone specimen frolicking in his display. In recent years this particular species has apparently seen an introduction into a domestic captive breeding program, so hopefully G. loreto will start seeing a price drop over the next 20 years or so.

Deer park is nothing compared to coburg
@reconnaissance73723 жыл бұрын
@@ranilperera6127 Deer Park aquarium kills Coburg, Deer Park is the best Aquarium in Melbourne by far. It may be small, but they have the best selection of Coral and Marine Fish in Melbourne and restock weekly. Super knowledgeable staff, Coburg has too many young workers who have no knowledge in either freshwater or saltwater. Coburg and Deer Park have both grown a lot in the years these comments were made but Deer Park is my go to local fish store. I have seen staff fail to sell their tanks because they explain to customers that the hobby is more advanced than the freshwater hobby and I think they are very humble and show a lot of integrity for their store because they could just throw someone a tank for a quick buck and not give it a second thought but instead will explain to people what they need to do and some people can't handle it.

I get confused, which isn't a difficult task, but has the reef keeping industry agreed on an adequate filtration system for a reef aquarium? I have seen so many different filtration types, some promoting a refugium and some just a sump. Then there are the media reactors? I just wish there was more consensus on what works, and what does not.

I think it is a minor miracle that many of the freshwater species exist in stores around me today. From talking to a number of fish store retailers around my town in Qld, many no longer source ornamentals from overseas due to the financial burden that quarantine laws impose on orders, as well as outright prohibition of certain species. They instead order from domestic breeders. In effect this may mean that the vast majority of the few foreign species here now would not be available without broodstock brought to the island long before legislation made them unprofitable to import. It may also raise a question about long term gene pool viability of domestic stock...

Cleaner Shrimp prices are shocking!!
@playinragz6 жыл бұрын
“I’m All for higher prices on yellow tangs” says you. It’s been 25 years since I lived the SW world. I’m shocked, stunned and disappointed of today’s prices and techniques. “Fragging” especially makes me sick! Ripping off the customer with tiny pieces for inflated costs. A frigging fist size corals now diced up to make 20x the cash. And the prices are just stupidly high. Australia has corals for sale the right way. I thought about starting back up until I seen the new age aquarists con. Now it’s just gonna be a 20 gal. Star polyps, 2 clowns. My old wet dry says stored. I see all these new toys for reefs. I wonder why? It’s gimmick equipment to make people look cool. Julian Sprung showed us the only thing a reef needs, skimmer and lights. Maybe I’ve become a “Old Timer” unable to accept change. Then again, change isn’t always good!
@ReefBuildersVideo6 жыл бұрын
Do you suppose we collect 20 corals instead of one colony which is then shared with 20 Aquariums?
@playinragz6 жыл бұрын
Reef Builders lol no debate here, you were in elementary school when I was trying to ban cyanide from reefs. I’ve always been a proponent of expanding the home aquarium with healthy and honest people. I haven’t seen a reef in 20 years so I’m stunned. If frags survive I’m all for um. Just don’t like the prices! Or Farms that make $$ before anything else. Idk enough about today’s aqua life for sure! You Vids have corals we dreamed of years ago thriving that’s just awesome. If you can imagine a time warp into the future, that’s what I’m going through now. VHO and MH lighting to LED’s, it’s mind blowing! Your passion shows in the Vids like the tanks on display. We’re on the same team! Like any team there’s disagreements but sharing the same goal is what matters. Keep up the good work!
