The remote Revillagigedo Archipelago off Mexico’s Pacific coast is a hotspot for giant mantas that interact with awe-struck scuba divers. Scientists with the Pacific Manta Research Group are studying the local population using photo ID techniques and acoustic tags which track the movements of these mysterious fish. Experts from Pelagios Kakunjá are conducting experiments to see if the filter-feeding rays are impacted negatively by microplastics, tiny pieces of toxic trash that float in the ocean.

Wow how very special - we are so consumed by our lives and all the trials and tribulations especially in this era of Pandemic we lose track of what is happening in the far depths. It is the dedication of these few people that shine a light on our eco systems and the sheer beauty and wonder of sublime creatures such as the Mantas and how their very existence affects mankind’s future.

How great it is to have Dr Robert Rubin showing us his masculine, scientific ability to be able to connect with the Windmills of his Mind... there is no wasted day at sea. I have been loving it since I first waded into the waves at Costa Mesa in 1958. I was seven years old. I would like to work with Dr Rubin, helping to prepare healthy, tasty meals for his crew. Listen again, to Dusty Springfields song, Windmills of Your Mind.

The world needs so much education on litter, alternate options for plastic. Countries send their products all over the world so no way to know where the litter came from. We should look into the eyes of all animals and make better choices as humans.

how is recognizing them as conscious "not good science?"
@eschwarz1003
@eschwarz1003 4 жыл бұрын
yes, I thought they did the "mark test" that is done with many animals to test recognizing themselves in a mirror and thereby deducing self awareness. A Manta tried to awkwardly turning multiple times to look at the mark on his belly and whatever else (cant really touch it). It is a hard thing to determine which is probably why he said that
@vedicardi

you could hypothesize they have consciousness but they certainly didnt concretely prove it.

Ana, thank you so much for your concern. The mantas so often do not change their movements when tagged, most of the time they don't feel it. It does hurt us to watch when they flinch! But without tags, we would not know how often they move between islands. That data helped UNESCO, and Parque Nacional Revillagigedo, to understand the need to create a no-take boundary that included all of the islands, so mantas and sharks can now swim safely anywhere within the archipelago. As our research continues, we find them traveling to the mainland, and we are watching to determine the season and the pathways, to determine whether their movements are predictable enough to ask for conservation measures there. - Karey Kumli, Project Manager, Pacific Manta Research Group.

Ana-It is unfortunate that both rays in this video flinched. There are other clips where the mantas don't react, including one where the tagging diver was checking whether the tag was going to stay on.
