From a huge change in plans for the 401, to getting some work done on it, to meeting a special fan, we are covering a ton of stuff in todays episode! Both of the Joes take care of removing the gear and the rest of the cleanup of the nose while Jason gets set up to get our new Cessna 172 off of our trailer. The next day we go over what ended up happening with the FAA in regards to the 235 crash as well as talking to a special fan. After that we introduce a big change for how this project will be done and a hint at what next episode might be about!

My guess is because KMQS (Chester Co. airport) has strict noise abatement procedure guidelines, according to their airport remarks and airport info plate. All that engine testing and running up they were doing just outside the hangar may have caused a complaint to be called in. There are homes just outside the northeast boundary of the airport. They also strictly keep helo operations to the west side of the airport and don't allow hover taxiing on taxiway A (the main one parallel to the runway).

Really enjoying your channel. I too would like to know why the FAA opened an investigation on the 401. As for the action the FAA took against you is actually a good thing. With remedial training on complying with airworthiness directives, that will help you in the long run. When I worked for our local FBO, we used a software program called ATP to track AD's on our fleet of aircraft as well as customers aircraft and never had a problem tracking AD's. ATP is also the same program the FAA actually uses at their FSDO offices. Its an easy program to use once you catch on to how it works. Looks like you are making good progress with the Cessna 401. I take it that Hobbs meter in the baggage area was for the Janatrol combustion heater. Had fun restoring the one we had in our Aero Club's Beechcraft B55 Baron, but I got it working again. Seeing you clean up that baggage area brought back many memories. We did a lot of heavy maintenance on the Aero Club planes at Wright-Patterson AFB when I first started working there because all the planes were in really bad shape. The FAA was threatning to shut down the Aero Club because the planes were so poorly maintained, which is why they hired me to help turn everything around. By the time the Aero Club closed in 2012, all the planes were in full compliance with AD's and the FAA was very happy how we turned things around by developing a good maintenance program for the fleet of aircraft we had. We always invited them to come over to inspect us to make sure we were doing everything correctly. They were really great to work with.

I also really appreciated hearing one of our alphabet agencies reaching out with a helpful hand rather than a heavy hand. We can all learn and be better by cooperative efforts. Rules always make rebels and that is no doubt costly. So in saying that this is the part I am most thankful to witness during this episode. Keep up the hard work and enthusiasm. It likely has something to do with the lack of paperwork for the maintenance of the plane. Without it all the time-limited parts would have to be replaced and all the change notices would have to applied. I don't know if licensing it as "Experimental" would circumvent this but flying this thing doesn't seem possible and has never been addressed. Following the money might also be worth verifying.

I think you really need to be an AP/IA to direct this project, and rebuild aircraft in general. I understand there are provisions for supervision by a mechanic, but just to understand the legality of repairs and acceptable methods of repair and inspection. I wouldn’t want the liability of that aircraft after it is signed off as airworthy (I’m talking as just being the owner/operator) unless I completely understood what is going on. When you put this stuff (trying to salvage an abandoned airplane) in front of the public you may not be doing general aviation any favors.

Lets try to land the 172 with those odd shape tires! Might work better than the 235 flat tire :P Anyway, keep up the great work guys! Every video has been amazing and you are coming up on the 1 year for the 401! Way to go, and keep it up! EDIT: Yes I'd love to hear about the story about the 401 complaint.
