As a new drone video shows, a major eruption almost ended in disaster, as a group of volcano spotters with more than 20 members climbed to the crater rim and was almost swept off the crater by the volcanic eruption.

Hi Silki. When I was a late teen I lived in Mammoth Lakes Ca. There is a place called Hot Creek there, it is in a caldera with a lake in it called Lake Crowley. I am an extreme sports guy from the 80's. I would walk up the creek and find the vent. I would dive down into the water until it became too hot to take. The sounds were unreal coming from the earth. Super intense thunderous bone rattling vibrations you can feel in your teeth. That was intense feeling.

I reside here in Hawaii and I want to explain why the people in this video should be checked into a mental hospital asap. In 2018, when we had eruptions from the Halema’uma’u Crater inside the Leilani Estates, there was a homeowner that was outside in his backyard when he got hit by a lava bomb and we had a tour boat that got a lot too close to the eruptions and a lava bomb just larger than a basketball went through the roof of the tour boat and injured a bunch of tourists. A lava bomb is like getting hit by a 120 lb bag of concrete that is on fire like a bag of lit charcoal that is all stuck together but weighs as heavy as concrete. That homeowner that I mentioned earlier, he was wearing a pair of Levi jeans and it burned right through his Levi jeans but crushed one of his legs at the same time. The lava was sticking to his Levi jeans, burning into his leg but would stick to his hands as he was trying to knock the lava off his jeans. He lived but probably something he ever wants to ever talk about. Even a 50 lb bag of lava hitting you at more than 80-90 mph, the last thing you’ll remember is that really loud sound of a thud of it hitting someone’s body. You just can’t make this stuff up, it actually happened here in Hawaii in 2018. Mahalo❤

@MarieJackson-sp3be it's sad that because people didn't know back in pre vulcanologist days that these systems were still active, but dormant and so people built their homes near to the fertile land that surrounds volcanoes thinking they were in a great place to raise crops to feed their families, and then generations down the line they're in danger. Its so easy for people who dont live near volcanoes that depends on their livelihood to say "they should just move". But it's so easy in practice! I feel for the people who've been forced through economics to have to stay in such places.

Crazy! At the tender age of 10 and with my father and a group of tourists I watched the temporary lava lake at Surtsey, off Iceland from about 250 yards. Close but in this instance as safe as these things can be. The wind was blowing towards the crater so fewer nasty fumes, and as the lava was very runny it allowed gases to escape and not build up so that the eruption was in a predictable, steady state. Beautiful but moderate explosions of glowing rocks every 20 minutes or so, and a lake of sulphurous fire straight out of the Book of Revelation! What, for a 10 year old boy, was not to like? (This was August 1964 btw, Surtsey having appeared out of the sea the previous November).

I think for volcano eruptions insights it would be nice to calculate the inside volume of the earth several times times per day using 3D geometric data. Magma will come out if: earthcrust shrinks faster than inside , inside expnads faster than crust, there are deformations/vibrations/vibration modes/shapes etc. of the crust.

They are so lucky. I live/born in Oregon and now live Washington. I tell you, when St Helens blew, it took a Big chunk of the side out with its exploding upward as well. Then we had a river of ash that killed a man that lived near it in the river of ashy mud and tree debris. So, they're incredibly lucky. It could have blown at the top and out the side. @@bendy6626a few years ago there was some intense volcano activity in Iceland I watched quite a bit of video footage and interviews right from so close to the lava flows themselves. Still outrageously hot that the lava that looked like it was so hot it was red and glowing but people with young kids were dangerously close and touching it with things and cooking marshmallows and trying to see if they could cook hot dogs. What?! But I saw it with my own eyes. BUT I wanted to mention yes drones were starting to be used to get great footage of these volcanos however if they were flown to close the heat would get to them and they went down.

Looking at the slope they're running down, it's strewn with boulders and it's covered in volcanic ash. So one could deduct that eruptions often hit that very slope where they were.

The job of government isn't to be a nanny. If people want to go jump in a volcano, that is their business. The government can not restrict people from danger. Safety is illusion; whenever you hear government say for your "safety", substitute "control". Leave it to government regulators and they will require people to have a license to operate stairs, or walk on sidewalks without full body protection and tracking. Perhaps there ought to be policy, that rescue workers are not obliged to rescue those deliberately putting their lives in danger, especially if this also means putting the rescuers lives in danger.

Why in the name of God would you go look over the rim of an active volcano, did they bring a virgin or something??
