My mom relaxed my hair when I was 4 years old. My mom told me my hair was too thick and she didn’t want to deal with it anymore so she relaxed it. My hair use to break off a lot and I use to think it couldn’t grow past my shoulders. My hair was really damaged until I did the big chop. After I did my big chop, I did a lot of research and I learned how to take care of my hair. My natural hair is long now and this is the longest my hair has ever grown. I learned to love my thick 4a natural hair all though it took me awhile to unlearn that only straight hair is good hair.

My mom said the same too me when she relaxed my hair at 5. I been natural since 2011 and I had to learn to care for my natural 4b/4c hair too.

The funny thing is my hair actually looks the the relaxer boxes now that I don’t have a relaxer but get keratin treatments instead. When I relaxed my hair it NEVER looked like the box

I can 100% believe that! I have seen women with keratin treatments have some of the smoothest hair ever! Although it seems to initially be very expensive, it does seem to pay off. Do your curls come back after your treatments? Thank you for stopping by and commenting!

I agree relaxers do not hide hair texture. in fact, ur hair should never be relaxed bone straight the professional rule of thumb is it should be 80% looser than ur natural hair texture. I went relaxed about 1 1/2 years ago after i just turned 17. not because i wanted to hide my texture or because i find natural hair hard (in fact i find it WAY easier) but cus i was looking for smth new during the pandemic. but before i did it i spent 3 months researching relaxed hair so i knew exactly what i was getting into and how to take care of it. although i agree relaxer boxes are deceiving, i think its irresponsible to put a chemical on ur body without doing some form of research.

i also dont like bone straight hair and have always preferred the kinky straight look so i think that also contributed to why i was not disappointed

I was always cognizant of the fact that my hair would never look/behave like a white persons hair. But instead of embracing it I saw it as there being something wrong with my hair/something wrong with me. Now as an adult I realized that the differences are just that. Differences. Everyone is different. Everyone’s hair is different. Even ppl with similar textured hair have many differences. I am trying being a heat trained natural right now. I just want an ease of styling and weekly maintenance . I love my natural hair I love how it looks and feels and how it behaves as I move. But it required constant maintenance. As far as texturism goes, white women were pushed as the standard of beauty so it’s normal to feel inferior with textured hair especially if your elders embraced that texturism. I prefer the kinky straight look as well. My hair only get bone straight silky with relaxers. Texture is a good thing.

The women in the relaxer boxes actually were natural with silk presses. Yung baby tate was on a just for me box and was natural when she modeled. And other women have came out and stated their hair was silk pressed

@@kmj2000 Now I feel even worse now.. lol ..All I needed was a silk press at the time. Relaxer never relaxed my hair correctly. My stylist and mom would say. It didn't take well your hair to coarse. @@Sondreyah08 I feel similar. I wanted my hair like the girl on the box and it never came out that way. That's part of what made me go natural. I felt relaxing was pointless because it never came out the way I wanted. I had my first silk press this year and it looked even better than the hair on relaxer box.

Those women on relaxer boxes usually have fine texture hair, flat ironed not relaxed, and are mixed race that usually have 2c through 3b hair type. If they black they usually have are 3c through 4a hair leave it w a silky oriental wig.

My parents never relaxed my hair. Been natural since birth. My mom always thought relaxers would mess up my hair, so she never did it. If I wanted straight hair she would just flat iron it. But most of the time my hair was just curly and still is.

I got a silk press for the first time in my life this year, and I was amazed at how silky it was because I NEVER got that silky look when my hair was relaxed. But I think you're right, keeping some texture is probably the best while going straight. All I need is for the strands to be straight enough that they don't form knots and snag on each other, I don't need a super silky look, plus I won't have to worry about breakage. I'll still be able to do the textured styles that I like.

I always thought it was just me not achieving the bouncy sleek result with relaxers 😅 I did a big chop and stopped relaxing my hair during lockdown and my hair was flourishing with the help of Aloe Vera, Black Castor and Hairfinity. My hair now reaches my armpits. But wash day with virgin hair is a significant struggle and I am very tempted to relax it again because it tangles so much that I can't brush it🙃🙃

i'm ngl, i think my hair slayed when i was relaxed, but i prefer being natural purely because i hate the burning sensation, no amount of basing with vaseline or whatever else ever saved me from it, so i just cut it out and i like my hair as it is. and it also slays but on the topic of being fed a dream, if i want my hair i'll just get a silk press, but i neverrr got my hair quite as straight as i wanted it/expected it be with only a relaxer without just as much effort as i do trying to straighten it now anyways. if i wanted it to look straight when relaxed, i still had to blow dry, flat iron, and either wrap or rolling up throughout the week for basic maintenance. which is really no different from the process of straightening my hair as it is now and lowkey a silk press gives me the straight look i had in mind better than what a relaxer gave me. So it just felt futile to keep getting a relaxer when i wasn't getting the look i expected in the first place and it hurt to go through the process of relaxing as the cherry on top. So I indeed did feel like i was fed a dream by the time i was old enough to decide if i wanted to keep a relaxer lol. And despite what some relaxed girls try to claim, being relaxed is an effort too, im a low maintenance natural so i dont do all that hours doing hair and being a product junkie stuff... at the end of the day its all about choosing your poison cause whatever you do having beautiful hair takes effort, but what does do is probably suit whatever their lifestyle is easier. I'm happy for ppl who are going back to relaxers and living their best lives. the natural hair community spread a lot of crazy things that people "should" be doing, and i think its probably the main thing that scared most of these girls away from staying natural when i look through some of their content on places like tiktok, the main things are ppl saying stuff like "i want my time back" and "i was wasting money on so many products", basically listening to the natural hair community even tho a lot of the times ppl was loud and wrong because nobody knew what the hell they was doing back then. So if being relaxed for them makes them feel beautiful and happy in their hair and they feel like its more suitable to their lifestyles in terms of maintenance, all the power to them.
