When this movie was filmed, it was partially filmed at Milwaukee County Stadium in Milwaukee, WI. The local rock station put out a call for people to help fill seats for the final game. My friends and I all called in sick to work and went. For the most part it was boring, but the free hotdogs and the vodka we smuggled in made it much more enjoyable. One of our crew can even be seen dancing in the aisle during Wild Thing. I'm glad you did this movie. Thank you.

It's pretty funny seeing that big "WTMJ-4" sign in all those shots of the scoreboard, when that is a *Milwaukee* TV station. (The call letters are because it was originally the television arm of the Milwaukee Journal newspaper, hence "Television Milwaukee Journal" acronymed to "TMJ".)

Why does Jake get to call what pitch? The catcher is the on-field general of the team; the quarterback, so to speak. He's the only player facing the rest of the team, and who everyone else can see all at the same time, so he can direct fielders to whatever positions they should be in (shifted in, out, left, right) considering the batter, the score, runners on base, and what inning it is. He studies all the opponent's batters so he knows which pitch is best to call in any situation. He's the smart one.

@derekhiemforth
@derekhiemforth 2 күн бұрын
The catcher needs to know what the pitcher is going to throw so he can be ready to catch it. The pitcher can't easily signal his intended pitch to the catcher because he's facing the batter. So instead, the catcher calls for a pitch, and the pitcher either throws that pitch or shakes the catcher off until the catcher calls for the pitch the pitcher *_does_* want to throw.

Originally there was going to be a scene right before the final game against the Yankees where we find out that Rachel Phelps was basically playing a con game the whole time: there never was an offer to move to Miami, she just couldn't afford to field a team unless she got the lowest-paid players around. So she personally scouted out as many people as she could who had genuine talent but some massive flaw holding them back, and made up the story that she wanted them all to lose, in the hopes that having her as a common enemy would inspire them to come together as a team and overcome their flaws in an effort to show her up. This scene got cut before the movie came out because test audiences much preferred having her as an actual villain, and whether or not that was the right choice is a matter of personal opinion. But it does clear up a few oddities, like why she never demoted or traded away any players who were obviously improving, or why Miami would have offered to build a stadium that seats 62,000 spectators when even the largest MLB stadia don't go much above 56,000. (The actual stadium that got built in Miami a few years after this movie can't even seat 38,000.) It also means that everything Rachel says in the locker room scene is absolutely true, she's just saying it in a way that makes her look like a complete asshole, which I kinda love from a storytelling aspect.
@cypher515
@cypher515 2 күн бұрын
I do know there was a perception that the more seats you had in the stadium, the more money you could make, because owners once thought there was a limit to what people would pay for tickets. Obviously, owners stopped believing that. But it's telling that Miami's _football_ stadium isn't much bigger than that (65 thousand), and New Oh-Hai-Mark Stadium in Buffalo is going to actually be 62 thousand itself.

He's been doing it since 1971. 14:12 The catcher suggests a pitch and the pitcher can either except it or ask for another. I think it's a broader film than say, BULL DURHAM which has pretentions (Which, I mean... It probably fulfills those pretentions.) of being a true to life film with humor laced through than a straight up comedy like MAJOR LEAGUE. For me, while Durham is probably the better "film", MAJOR LEAGUE is just a crackerjack comedy running on all cylinders. Cast all pull their weight and the script is fun and it's tight and well paced. I think it has entered the pantheon by now for sure.

As someone who played catcher from Little League all the way through college, I will confirm that it is the position that takes the absolute most punishment. And yes, there is a LOT of trash talking but sometimes the umpires are really strict about it and cut it off fast. As for who decides what pitch to throw, usually it's the coach/manager who signals to the catcher from the dugout unless you have a catcher that is really experienced and has been around forever. If you really want to see what goes on "behind the scenes" in a baseball game watch Bull Durham. It's another ultra classic baseball comedy!

Some great sports movies that I love... - Miracle (2004) - Hockey - Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks, the coach of the US Olympic Hockey Team in 1980, otherwise called "The Miracle Team". A true story...and a film that SHOULD have nabbed Russell a Best Actor Oscar nomination, but didn't. Great soundtrack, inspiring, moving, and just awesome!!! - Bull Durham (1988) - Baseball - Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins. A hysterical and moving film about the minor leagues. Some amazing quotable dialogue, especially Costner's "I believe" monologue...which is one of the funniest ever. - Chariots of Fire (1981) - Running - The true story of the 1924 British Olympic running team, focusing on Eric Liddell (Ian Charleston) and Harold Abrams (Ben Cross). Oscar-winner for Best Picture as well as for it's iconic score by Vangelis. It is a slow paced film, but it is one that is worthwhile. Also features an Oscar-nominated performance by Ian (Bilbo Baggins) Holm. Ben Cross played Sarek in the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek films, and his love interest in the film Alice Krige was the villain in Star Trek: First Contact. - A League of Their Own (1992) - Baseball - Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, Lori Petty, Bill Pullman, and Garry Marshall. Directed by Penny Marshall. A story set during WWII when women became pro baseball players while all the men were away at war. A fictious story wrapped in true events. This one is a MUST SEE! - Bend It Like Beckham (2002) - Soccer or Football, as it takes place in England - Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Anupam Kher. Directed by Gurinder Chadha. A comedy-drama about a Punjabi Sikh girl in London who longs to play football, while dealing with her sister's wedding and her conservative parents.

To answer your question about the batting order. Each team before the game gives a list of players who will be playing and what the batting order is. Once the 9 batters are set in order the order does not change. You can substitute a batter for someone on the bench. But once that batter has left the game he cant be put back in. The other question. About a ball hitting the scoreboard. Generally yes that would be a home run. Most ballparks have a yellow line on the top of the wall or sometimes across a tall wall. Anything that hits above that yellow line is a home run even if it bounces back on the field for some reason. The foul poles are also in play and hitting one of them counts as a home run as well.

When I was researching baseball for a play I was working on, my brother sat me down to watch this movie, and explained things as they were going on. At the high point, when Taylor calls his shot, I asked my brother: "Can he really do that?" "Yes," my brother smiled. "But only once." A book I have called "Nine Sides to the Diamond", devotes a chapter a piece to every position, explains what's expected at each position, and gives tiny bios of famous basemen. It's a cool book. For the catcher, he explains as is done down below in these comments: the catcher is the only one facing the field, and who can see what's going on. So he's the one to direct the pitcher.

The announcer "Just a bit outside" is the famous Bob Ueker. He was a catcher in the majors, and used to announce for the Milwaukee Brewers. He has done some other acting as was a beloved player for his sense of humor.

Bob Uecker is a real play by play announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers and he was also a TV actor. Most of the actors in this movie including Charlie Sheen played baseball at some competition level. The batting order is the order you bat in. It can't be changed or it's an out for batting out of order. You can bring in another player to pinch hit. Once the ball goes over the wall or yellow line if it hits something and comes back onto the field still a homerun. The stadium was the old stadium the Brewers played in so not filmed in Cleveland. You will like Major League 2 plus Caddyshack 2

Baseball stuff - the catcher is like a QB for the team on defense, is a single voice to learn the other team's hitters and know how to attack them, as well as knowing his pitchers and what they do well. Their input on the pitch is more of a suggestion, the pitcher can overrule them. It's still a homerun if the ball reenters play; if the ball clears a predetermined height within the foul poles it's a home run. Basically speaking of course. Batting orders can't be changed, but you can substitute someone off the bench in any spot if you also consider where they'd have to play on defense. Sometimes you sub one player in just to hit and replace that person later for defensive reasons.

The Catcher is like the Quarterback in baseball. That's why he gets to call what pitches get thrown. He can also call for defensive positionings. It's typically the Catcher who does most of the research, watching film, and reading the scouting reports, of the opposing team. Baseball teams can have captains, but usually in an unofficial capacity. It's usually a veteran that the younger players look up to.

The manager submits his starting lineup before every game to the umpire. The manager can and has the ability to put in what they call a pinch hitter. A pinch hitter can go in a bat for one of the starting line up guys. The manager can also put a pinch runner in the game. And yes. If the ball hits the sign and the sign is obstructing the ball from going over the fence then it is a home run. A home run with the bases loaded is called a grand slam.

Lynn is played by Rene Russo, in her film debut. You might recognize her from the Kevin Costner golf classic "Tin Cup"…but more likely you know her as Thor's mom. Klu Heywood ("Handlebar") was played by an actual former MLB player, as was the Yankees relief pitcher, Duke Temple. However, for fun, Heywood was played by Pete Vuckovich (a former pitcher) and Temple by Steve Yeager (a former catcher). It has now been Taylor Swift's entire life time (35 years) since this film came out…and the Indians still haven't won a World Series since 1948. In all of professional sports, they trail only the NFL's Arizona Cardinals (who won the 1947 NFL title [before there were Super Bowls and when the franchise was stil the Chicago Cardinals]) in longest time without a championship. Maybe they need to start worshipping Jobu?

I graduated HS in 89, and several friends had jobs at the Universal Cineplex at Universal City, so for two summers I saw tons of free movies every weekend. That being said, most were more than forgettable especially ones I would see at the late showing, as I would often nod off. But having seen what was probably hundreds of movies, there were a few diamonds in the rough and Major League was one of those films, as it was just another freebie at the time(that I had no idea was any good). This is easily one of the best sports comedies ever made and it easily sits near the top with the likes of Bad News Bears(OG), Caddyshack, Kingpin, Bring it On, etc. While part 2 wasn't as good as the first, it is more than worth a viewing, as it had its moments so for sure give it a chance if you get the time.

The thing about sports movies, sports tv shows, is that you really don't need to know the sport hardly at all; certainly not care about it. Honestly, most of the time, sports fans make fun of the sports scenes because the sports look really so obviously unrealistic, the situations are outlandish, and the actors are very clearly not athletes (most of the time). But sports just works *so well* as a natural story arc: the ups-and-downs of a season, with the goal of making the playoffs serving as a natural climax, or if the team is going for the championship, the either the Final series or the Championship game (in baseball, basketball, and hockey, it's a best of 7; in football, just one game). And the relationship between teammates, the arc as they grow from teammates to a family... and then either overcoming together and winning it all, or making a valiant effort and coming up *just* short... it's a perfect framework for a story. Never dismiss a sports movie or tv show just because you don't like the sport; the vast majority of the time the sport isn't the point, it's about relationships and struggle, whether the character(s) eventually succeed or fall short.

Yes using various substances on a baseball to get a little extra movement on the ball is a real thing. Former MLB Pitcher Gaylord Perry was infamous for doctoring baseballs/throwing spitballs. He pitched for 21 seasons and retired at the age of 45, he was inducted into The Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.

Part of this was filmed in Tucson, where I'm from. I was only a kid when this was filmed. I don't know which stadium scene it was, but there was an ad in the newspaper for background extras needed for the audience. But my aunt said it was too hot and she didn't want to be in the sun for hours during filming, so we didn't go. Unfortunately I didn't appear in my first film until 2011, decades after this film came out. I'm glad I did though, because now I'm living the dream, making movies here in Arizona. It's only a minor regret that I wasn't in Major League.
