Michael Winslow IS the same sound effect guy from Spaceballs. My favorite scene in this movie is when Mahoney is teaching Hightower how to drive. Hightower ripps the front seat of the slugbug out and sits in the back seat to drive. Hightower hits a dude and the dude gets out, all pissed off, goes to the window and realizes the driver is in the back seat and HUGE. He quietly goes back to his own car. Love that scene.

40 years ago. This one along with Beverly Hills Cop. When unorthodox comedies about police were golden. P.A. had so many characters with so many personalities. Great direction and writing for it's genre. 12 of the people involved have passed away, some of them part of the franchise for most of the films. Director of the first installment, the late Hugh Wilson does a cameo (Angry Driver). 1+6 sequels within a decade and the first film was the highest-grossing. The content was dumbed down and marketed to kids as an animated series (1988-1989) with tie-in comics and video games. Also a short-lived series continuation (1997-1998) of the films with some castmembers reprising their roles. All of them are good with their own craziness. Go ahead and watch 'em all.

The idea for this movie came when the producer, Paul Maslansky, worked on THE RIGHT STUFF and needed many cops for a scene. The state provided them with cadets from the Police Academy. When they arrived on their busses, Maslansky noticed that they "didn't look like cops". They were big, small, old, very young, fat, and too thin. The present Police Captain smiled and told him: "We have to accept them as applicants, but nothing says that we must pass them".

That must be nice! Cops in America have a much shorter training. In fact you can become a cop a lot easier than you can become a beautician or a barber! It’s ok though, if they make a mistake when they get to be a cop we have a neat rule that gives them total immunity!

@@MrDanteMasonIt is a short process sir! Most cops don’t even know what law they are enforcing. They just demand people bow down to their authority. I could direct you to hundreds of examples, but I will just say that cops used to require more education. They used to require some education usually in the field of criminal justice. Some cops had 4 year degrees and while the worked got their Law degree and became lawyers. Right around 9/11 we started lowering the requirement and hiring any former soldier. I love our soldiers but a soldier suffering from PTSD doesn’t need a gun and a license to kill!

Good looking out for watching this movie because it is still one of my most favorite ones from the 80s. When this movie was released on March 23, 1984, in the US, I was 6 going on 7 years old in the second grade. I probably shouldn't have watched this and lot of stuff back then at that age, but I did. A lot of kids watched this movie and the others, especially since there was a Police Academy cartoon a few years later in 1988. I believe I somehow seen this movie on HBO or VHS first even though I don't remember exactly when, but I've seen them on both. That's because it took about 1 to 2 years for movies to make it to VHS and sometimes longer for television in the 80s. The movies would premiere on Cable TV before regular tv. Anyway, those were the days. I hope you continue to watch the sequels, at least up to Police Academy 4. Good day. 👍

It's my brother's ringtone every time he calls me. Just to mess with him.

I remember watching the first two with my family over and over back in the day. I haven't watched them since! I should get back to them. I love the theme!

Only watch #2 and #3 and stop there. It gets really bad afterwards. This is a hysterically funny movie!

This is fun. It's been a long time since I watched this movie. I love it when Jen laughs. It doubles the fun. I recommend HotShots with Charlie Sheen. It's a Top Gun parody.

The man who directed this film was Hugh Wilson. He was also responsible for the TV series WKRP in Cincinnati! 😎
