Ok. Awesome structural pack stuff aside, can we talk about this episodes sponsor? Is this products existence evidence enough that maybe Tesla's approach to in car controls is maybe _too_ minimal? I feel like I'm the only one at times who actually prefers physical buttons and dials for standard in car controls (AC, temperature, fan speed, etc) as they are often the things that I would want to change while driving and a touch screen is just not tactile enough when really my focus should be on the road.

Its a beautiful design. As in : "OMG! I totaled my Tesla! Want to buy my battery? How about a motor? The wheels are still good. Recycle the rest." The steel top and aluminum bottom on the battery guarantees, if there is a fire, it will drop onto the road before melting into the cabin. The bottom of the pack is a fuse. That's better than steel on the bottom and aluminum on top.

The structural pack is pretty much what I expected. You can't actually weld the cells to the pack housing due to all the different voltage potentials present, so you have to fill with a dielectric material like the foam.

One major point that people are going to be seeing a lot of fake information on is the recycled ability of the 4680 battery pack system period Both Elon and Sandy made it very clear that these battery packs will easily be ground into microbits without disassembly of any kind and using a process of heating and separation that Sandy called floating similar to fractionation in a refinery tower, all of the components will be separated and recovered and be fully recycled into new batteries and packs, basically once the components are separated they are individually equal to extremely high grade or from a mine, because they've already been processed and purified so this will be extremely efficient recycling and the batteries and pack system made from the recycled material will be absolutely equivalent to new batteries made from or taken from mines

A functioning structural battery pack alone is amazing. Knowing that this is the first iteration is almost a relief since Tesla stays innovating. Finding a totally dry manufacturing battery process would be significant! Let’s hope they solve it!

One advantage for the consumer is, if the battery degrades to below the threshold for the warranty, Tesla will have to swap out the whole battery pack, meaning that you will once again have 100% SOC. I have heard of other manufacturers that only change smaller parts of the battery to bring the car within warranty limit. So the car goes to 69% and they change only the worst performing cells to bring the car up to, say 72%. A downside is, i would imagine that recycling these batteries will be a LOT harder, than if they had not been "set in glue" like that.

What I wish is the 500 mile with the active air suspension and an air line for tire inflating or deflating for a true Off Road Model W, also bigger wheel wells for allowing bigger off road tires, and for them to be able to be hidden while driving in low ride highway mode for efficiency reasons. (Also the two level sun roof automatic covers with a 50% obscuring mesh and a heat reflective protecting screen with heat trapping mitigation that also has insulated bottom for not burning the passengers in case of touching it.)

Watching Tesla's cars and soon trucks evolve reminds me of the era of planes. No one at the beginning of the era of planes had any idea of all the changes and innovations that happened every day, week and year to get to where we are today. From wooden frames covered in cloth, with 3 wings then 2 then 1. Who can say where we are going to be in 10 years or what breakthrough will revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. Enjoy the ride I say!

Isn't the 4680 supposed to exceed the performance of the 2170, based on what Elon and Drew said at Battery day? I know this may take some time to get there, but you said the 4680 isn't supposed to exceed the performance of the 2170, but I thought that was what they claimed as the goal.

The energy density also depends on the end-of-charge voltage which is under Tesla's control. They might be backing off on the charge voltage in the short term to improve cell safety; over time, as the cell design improves, they can charge higher and get better energy from essentially the same cell.

That literally felt like watching the result of someone who rushed to get his job done as there was some arbitrary due date. The core idea is great, but the execution suffered from some quick fixes. Still, I am intrigued by the new battery design. The finished product looks so massively engineered that it becomes hard to imagine any complete failure. Down to the cell level these battery backs look incredibly robust; it is like seeing all known failure points vanish at once. How does such a battery even explode or die? Probably the cooling could be improved in several ways, and yet I am sure that the implementation will work as long as there is no failure in the cooling system (seems a bit more single point of failure susceptible as the rest). Where would that thing even break? Trucks don't cut it, that would take a cartoon sized boulder or star wars light sword to imagine.

NO BETTER BATTERY DENSITY than the old cells. Ugh. The MB EQXX has a 747 mile range and battery density of 400 Wh/L. MB says a car using this battery will be for sale in 2 years. There is no way Tesla can call the current MYLR, "Long Range," if it only is capable of a "measly" 330 mile range. Some batteries made by CATL in 2023 will have a 620 mile range and 10-80% charging in 10 minutes. I just can't get over the original paltry range of the Model X at 80% 220 miles (which was realistically about 100 miles at 80mph) and the M3LR which at 80% of 330 and at 80mph will be about 160 miles. That's it. We are talking about peanuts improvement here. The original Model X (the flagship model) was only able to get from San Francisco to San Jose and back ONCE. For some people, that is only 1 commute and then needs to fully charge. The current MYLR couldn't make it twice without charging at the destination.

Tesla would never vent the battery heat out of its housing, the heat pump works partially by using the systems heat generation, meaning all that insulation is there to prevent heat from escaping the pack in any other way besides the cooling system it was intended to, while adding structural support. The better they do at designing within those parameters, they better these cars perform in cold weather.

No. As a metallurgical Engineer I can assure that dumping batteries into liquid iron will just cause the nickel, copper, cobalt to dissolve into the iron. This makes these metals really hard to recover since they become substantially diluted. Lithium and aluminum will dissolve into the slag as oxides and they too will be substantially diluted, probably impossibly so. Graphite will all be oxidized to carbon monoxide and that’s the end of it. Manganese will probably dissolve into slag too but some will be reduced to metal and dissolve into the iron. This would in no way be considered a viable process by just forcing the concentrated elements into impossible chemistry to ever recover them economically.

The plate contains the batteries, but also straps the passengers to the battery pack. No one does it like this. With most rollover accidents, the ICE is dropped and other parts go flying off. Reducing angular momentum. The latest Tesla designs have fewer parts and passengers attached to the battery pack. Wondering what real world accidents will show.
