This has been addressed on all models from the factory 2019 and beyond and prior years there was a recall that provided a software update and new AC parts free of charge plus an extended warranty for all affected vehicles. You should have Honda apply the fix to yours if the previous owner hasn’t. Also smelling the oil won’t provide an accurate reading of how badly diluted it is. You should send a sample to blackstone to see the actual percentage. Bare in mind a minute amount of bypass is normal because of how the engine works basically. On cold starts until the block warms up and the piston rings make a tight seal some drops may get by the cylinder walls. Driving the car for long enough after said cold start will evaporate the fuel from the oil pan.
@Sals_Garage2 жыл бұрын
I know about that software update. Thanks for the info. As far as I know they program the engine to run warmer to evaporate any fluids that sneak into the oil. Sounds like a bandaid fix though. I’ll order a black stone analysis for the oil and update you all soon. Cheers

My wife has the 2016 EX-T and I have always changed the oil myself. I read about the dilution and decided to check for myself. I drained the oil and then added 3.7Qts with a new filter. I then emptied the used oil into an empty pennzoil gallon jug. I measured 4.2qts. This entire process was repeated after another 5000 miles and I got the exact same results. 4.2Qts of fluid came out of that engine. I called Honda and filed a claim. Long story short....I ended up at the Dealership where the claim to have reprogrammed the computer and then they changed the oil again. 5000 miles later, I changed the oil for the third time and measured the used fluid. Yep, 4.2qts again. Now I have to go back to the Dealership and have it done all over again. Meanwhile, my wife is driving around in a car with diluted oil. Holy cow! Reading some of these comments I find it hard to believe people aren't getting better gas mileage than they are reporting. I have the 2018 EXT manual 6 speed sedan and on a really hot summer day, I get as high as 48 mpg if I drive almost all interstate and over 200 miles. I'm talking Utah temps about 100F degrees and 80mph on the rural interstates, which is our rural speed limit. Of course in the winter the air density is thicker, taking more throttle to go the same speeds due to increased air resistance. So in the winter I only get about 39 to 42 mpg, depending on how gently I drive on the same interstate driving. I never drive pure city driving, at worse I'd call it mixed city/highway. Summer or winter mixed city/hwy I get around 34 to 37 mpg. The air density in that kind of driving matters far less since air resistance is negligible at slower than 50 mph speeds, so summer or winter temps don't matter much.

Is you thermostat stuck open? Gasoline should evaporate out of the oil in a short time once the oil temperature comes up. I’m wondering if your thermostat is stuck and your engine is never warming up fully? We used to add a gallon of gas to our diesels in the cold weather (-40F or worse) to thin out the oil. By the time the engine warmed up the gas had evaporated and the oil was back to full viscosity. Obviously with modern oils we don’t need to do this anymore.

Hi guys! I live in Brazil and haven't heard of this oil dilution problem here yet, only in USA and Europe, maybe it is not a BIG problem since we have warmer weather and only a small part of our territory (southern region) has an european-like weather. I have a few questions: 01. Are you guys aware of this oil dilution problem occurring in other Honda engines? The L15B DOHC naturally aspirated with direct injection is my biggest concern. Honda City and Honda HRV both use naturally aspirated L15B with direct injection here; L15B7 (turbo) equips Civic, HRV, CRV and Accord. Maybe this issue does not occur in Honda engines with indirect injection due to the lower pressure at which fuel is injected inside the combustion chamber. 02. Which oil does your Honda engine require? In Brazil all new Honda gasoline engines use 0W20 fully synthetic oil; is there any country where another oil grade is used? A few years ago 10W30 mineral oil was recommended for all Honda models.

Ethanol fuels appear to make the fuel dilution problem worse e.g. It was only when my car started using E10 (10% ethanol) that the fuel dilution problem started. N.B. Stopping the E10 saw the fuel dilution decrease. Flushing the engine out with a product called "Ring Free" helped as well. Had exactly the same problem except worse (used E10 for longer) on my sister's car i.e. Started using oil despite the mechanic being unable to find a cause. Flushing out the engine stopped the oil use. We presume that the rings got gummed up. 🙂

@MichaelCzajka Жыл бұрын
Here's what we worked out happened: Burning ethanol creates oxidised byproducts. The oxidised byproducts polymerise into a sticky goo which gums up your engine. The rings in particular gum up and don't seal properly. That's why more fuel ends up in your sump and dilutes the oil. 🙂

Just do your oil changes more often, there is no fix to this issue, the cylinders are small enough and with a turbocharger and a direct injection fuel injection, this causes oil dilution, to fix this issue, an engine teardown is required, maybe replace the piston rings with something better in terms of separating fuel from oil. What I do is I just change my oil often like 3000-5000 km is enough to avoid severe wear. And Honda claims they fix the issue by making the cars idle higher, so when they recalled the cars, the Honda techs, all they did was just update the car’s computer (ECU) to make the engine idle higher on cold starts.

Hi, I'm from another country "Panama" and I saw your channel, my country is extremely hot and has a variable climate, "deeply tropical". I want to get a manual SI 2018 Coupe that has 14 km (I think it would be something more than 8000 miles) that is the same as yours, but that "oil dilution" thing is the first time I hear it and this is going to be my first Honda in life, I come from a Kia Picanto and a Hyundai Tucson, therefore I know ZERO about Honda and this calls my attention a lot. @Sals_Garage2 жыл бұрын
The previous oil change before that was near 5 quarts. The oil has a strong smell of fuel as well. It is a very real issue that Honda is trying to bandaid with a software fix that makes the engine run hotter on purpose. Mix that with the unreliable AC system and It makes me not want to get another Honda again.
@Kagemusha3202 жыл бұрын
@@Sals_Garage Its just weird that everyone else is having these issues with thier Hondas and I am not. My oil level is consistant, my oil never smelled or smells of gas, I've never had a gas smell in the cabin and my oil drains, when measured, are consistant. This almost leads me to belive it can also be a quality control issues from factory with the engines. My 2018 FK7 has had Zero recalls or TSBs. not even the faulty fuel pump recall that most FK7's and FK8's had. but only time will tell I guess. With that said though, I have adapted my habbits as much as possible to avoid the oil dilution issue, which honestly should not be a thing. And when I got my FK7 new I followed the break in period religiously. so idk.
