@@dhinton1 It was a massive bluff on Sisko's part, and it was done to play upon and exploit Eddington's one weakness, his desire to be the hero in his own story. If Sisko was going to truly be ruthless, he would have fired the torpedoes AT the colony and wiped it out, rather than on the opposite side of the planet to give them a chance to evacuate. Worf, Kira and Dax were shocked because none of them had ever seen Sisko go to this level to defeat an enemy, and at the time none of them knew he was bluffing, and whether or not he was actually going to take out every Maquis settlement as he threatened to do. Not even Dax who has known him the longest.

The reason I say the tractor beams instead of the engines is because the inertial dampeners. The engines are going to give an certain amount of thrust. Adding the extra mass of the Galor-class starship would slow them down, but would still be possible even with weak engines. Usually the force of the engines is spread out across the entire ship because of the dampeners. The tractor beam, however, needs to be strong enough to pull whatever the force needed is through one tiny emitter.

@@NotContinuum I would imagine the power output required for Quantum torpedoes would have been more than the station could handle. Pound for Pound, a starship has far greater energy output because of its Warp Core. Without a warp drive, a space station would require far less, which then comes at a cost for such weapons. ESPECIALLY if you have to power a much more massive collection of phaser arrays.
@floppydisksareop4 жыл бұрын
@@k1productions87 they use the same antimatter reactor as far as i know, but DS9 being an unholy mismatch of Bajoran, Federation and Cardassian technology and also originally a mining station, probably didn't have conduits strong enough to operate any stronger armaments without frying a few fuses(like fuses are a thing).... Also, wouldn't a torpedo launched from a slingshot have the same effect as a regular launched one? If so, no energy problems, they are just probably too hard to make
@k1productions874 жыл бұрын
@@floppydisksareop Didn't they refer to DS9's reactors as fusion reactors? Not the same as a Warp Core. Torpedoes in Star Trek are a tricky thing. They were originally energy weapons until Wrath of Khan retconned them into physical warheads. The only ship we've seen that could launch Photons and Quantums from seemingly the same tube was the Defiant. Otherwise ships like the Enterprise-E had different dedicated tubes for the two. This presumes different requirements for the different torpedoes, even though the devices themselves are roughly the same size. I'm sure Federation starbases use matter-antimatter reactors, but that is not the same as a "Warp Core," as traveling at warp has much more drastic requirements than powering a starbase. That being said, the giant mushroom Federation starbases are MUCH MUCH larger than the rather flimsy Cardassian ring thing.

Enterprise was there in this episode but left before the wormhole was discovered (station was of no strategic value until then). Bigger question is why the 4 Galor class warships at the end of this clip didn't just seize the station now that they knew there was a valuable stable wormhole there. Maybe Dukat was too ashamed to try it after Sisko had just saved his ass.
@floppydisksareop4 жыл бұрын
Or because they've just lost a war and don't need the Federation starting one more over the control of the wormhole. If they had blasted DS9 for the missing ship, that would have been retaliation and would have been smoothed over by diplomats from both sides, as noone needed a war. You can't just smooth over lost territory as easily as a lost station which destroyed one of the opposing force's military vessel...

@@amybrennan6972 There was another more practical reason for switching to stenciled spots over a forehead bump; Farrell's skin reacts poorly to prosthetics. It's the same reason Jadzia didn't take part in the Klingon infiltration in "Apocalypse Now".

I cant understand how the Federation didn't act on this aggression, as firing on a federation station is an act of war.
@thegreenmanofnorwich4 жыл бұрын
It's a Bajoran station, though. The federation just administers it. I can't imagine that with the Federation or the Bajorans would be keen on armed conflict before there had been a chance to fortify the station, especially in view of the importance of the newly discovered wormhole

This was still the TNG utopia era. The Federation did not learn to stand up for itself until the Dominion war, and then it was almost too late.

Because they were pansies; also Jassad claimed to be there because he believed Dukat's ship had been destroyed, which furnished the "provocation" to fire on them. It was much better once they had the "Defiant," because it didn't take hours or days for Starfleet to send a ship from over there to over here; if they had had the "Defiant" from the beginning, those 3 Cardassian ships would have thought twice.

I find it funny, O'Brien wasn't on the station that long and he's all over that Cardassian tech like he knows it back to front. I'd just once like to see a Starfleet officer with a service manual open flicking through some pages saying something like "Does anyone know what page the shield section is???"
@Spacegoat924 жыл бұрын
@@jasonbriski5048 That ain't good writing at all, if anything it showed a lack of thought. It's a bit different being a war veteran and being an expert on enemy tech, he fought for the Federation, not the Cardassians. Like if they mentioned he did covert work on Cardassia or something like that it would be different, but he is just an ordinary Starfleet engineer. And even if he did know stuff about Cardassian tech, 10 years is a very long time in technology terms and one can become rusty very quickly if you're not around that tech all the time. It's totally different technology in a totally different branch of service. He's gone from premier cutting edge Federation flagship, to backwater barely operational mining station of a completely different species. It would be like having an American Iraq war veteran and then station him on an Iraqi oil rig and having him to know the systems inside and out just because he fought the Iraqis 10 years earlier. It doesn't make sense. Even in the same country and same job, if you change companies, unless they are using identical equipment to what you've been using, you need to re skill. Humans can't even go from driving automatic cars to manual cars without having to learn to use a clutch, and even that takes time! It's always been something that's bugged me on Star Trek, whenever they board an enemy ship or station, even if they've never encountered them before, they straight away know what buttons to push, and how to straight away find out the status of the systems, They can automatically read the language without any issues. Even on Star Trek 3 and 4 when they captured to Klingon Bird of Prey, they showed Scotty having some difficulty in figuring out the ships systems. O'brien went from different technology, different species, different system layout, different language without even so much as a hiccup. Like even if he had a laptop or tricorder to interface with the Cardassian systems, that would have been better, but no, he jumped straight in and Mary Sued it. I just don't find it believable from a human skill point of view.

Once I got into DS9 I realised it's by far the best Star Trek Series. No, it wasn't what Gene envisioned with not everything being able to be settled with words and mutual respect. It was more "what would people be willing to do to protect those morals and people, what would people do when faced with people who don't accept those morals and view of the universe". Bajor was the best setting for it, The Dominion a bastardised enemy of the Federation and Gul Dukat being THE BEST written Star Trek villains yet (and honestly one of the best in TV history - he just isn't given the credit). The crew were also amazing. Seeing non-Federation crew work with Starfleet long term is also an underrated beauty. The almost (as Eddington said) insidious nature of Starfleet grow on Quark and the like was pretty cool.
