Cheers for the video content! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (google it)? Jesus Mora. They need more than a hug mate. A kick in the backside would be better. Justin is among the top three guitar teachers on You Tube. His free content contribution over the years is beyond anyone else. Back in the day about thirty years ago (before You Tube) I was paying 15 AUD for a half hour lesson with no TABs, backing tracks etc. Now all this tuition is free and you can repeat it many time over in practice. But alas, some people are never happy. I bought a couple of Justin's DVD's some years ago and they're excellent. A great teacher and he's also a very warm balanced individual. They don't come any better than Justin!

This must be one of the most important class ever. I watch it over and over again every now and then, discover new things every time. First, look at those red notes, its a E barre chord. that is if you know E barre, you've already remember 6 notes. second thing is, if you move one or two notes while you are barre chord, you are still doing the same chord in a different way. and you could do some change or riff instead of just strumming it. really cool! thanks Justin.

Been playing guitar for close to 18 years now, took lessons for 2 years when I began, but didn't pay much attention to them because I felt that I just wanted to make MY music, didn't want to be influenced by how "other" people made music.. (these days play fingerstyle in open tuning almost exclusively) but going through all these videos of yours starting from the basics, has really.. kind of open up new aspects to this music world which I thought I had a pretty decent grasp of. you are awesome.

I’ve been playing that as a moveable scale up and down the fretboard as the first drill/scale I do every time I practice. I then go up and down the fretboard with the pentatonic scales and finally a scale I learned from a KZbin video. It too works on every fret. And yes 😵‍💫, I’m one of those people who plays all the scales and drills and can’t solo, I’m going to look at your videos and try to learn some solos. Thanks for providing your lessons. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩵

Wow, I've been playing for decades and only had formal lessons for a year or so when I was in the Jazz Band in HS. Just now realizing that, not only had I just learned one position of the pentatonic scale, I had only learned HALF of the first position major scale! I was bored with them and didn't practice or take them any further. IN the last few months I've leaned all five pentatonic positions (before I started looking at Justin's work) NOW I've got to finish learning position one of the major scale. Fun fun and the neck is already opening up and much more "AHA's" are going off. My mind is ahead of my fingers for sure. Hang in there new kids. Learn it slow and correctly --ALL- of it. Don't be all ADD like me. (or do but work with it--not like it's optional).

I made a big mistake a few days ago, I was playing with the guitar through the lesson and not listening or watching enough, then when I looked up you were talking about the diagram about the scale that would help us doing this, so I went on the website and I have been doing after the diagram a few days and I realized I was doing it wrong the whole time and I almost have it fully in the muscle memory by now, Now I have to adjust and keep pressing 124 124 134 134 124 124, My hands just won't do 24 124 134 134 24 124. Lesson learned. WATCH THE VIDEO FIRST AND MAKE SURE YOU TAKE EVERYTHING IN THAT JUSTIN SAYS, after that you can rewatch as you with with the guitar while playing.

Consider buying a book :) Justin makes great free lessons. I bought a couple of his songs books to help support they channel and they are awesome. The books don't just have the tabs with chords but also have strumming patters and advice on playing the song. Also many of the songs have suggested advanced versions of chords, so we can skill up as we get better.

Funny how when I was a kid I thought the first thing you should learn on guitar is to play the major scale and then play some melodies with it, and THEN would you be ready to try some chords. Justin's course is structured exactly the other way around (rightfully so). I wish I had a good teacher back then to tell me how much stuff you can learn and how many songs you can do without ever playing a single individual note.

+Skage-Z-7 Very true but when I first learnt my teacher pushed me towards scales and improvisation and I never really got my head round chords and rythym. The consequence being I could run xsome nice melodies over a backing track but if somebody asked me to pick up a guitar and play a tune or accompany a song I hadn't a clue. Since then I have had several years without picking the guitar up and now I am starting over but concentrating on chord structure and rythym. (Though I am still working on scales too)

@frnezykiller If you read the description beside the scale pattern displayed on Justin's website it explains why it says "Major (E)". If you'll notice there are dots with the letter "R" inside them. These are the root notes of the scale, the first "R" is on the 3rd fret in the image, or the lowest "G" note in this particular scale. The numbers beside those dots are showing which fingers should be used to play those notes in the scale. To be continued ....

If you pay close attention to the other red dots, along with the dots that contain the "R" or root notes, you may wonder why they are red when they aren't roots. Think about the notes that make up a G major chord, remembering major chords are the 1 (or root), 3 and 5 of the scale, for G you get the notes G-B-D. If you follow the pattern farther, stripping away the black dots, you see the E-shaped barre chord of G. Hence the "Major E" label. Hope that helps.

Yes it's suppose to have F#. C is the major scale without a #. If you learn the circle of fifths, each scale you go clockwise by requires 1 more sharp. So C starts at 12 oclock, has no sharps, G has 1, D has 2, A has 3 etc.

Justin, I've been using your videos for awhile now and did your beginners course. You've helped me learn guitar tremendously! But recently I decided to take real lessons with a teacher to try and take things to the next level, and he gave me a few different scales in multiple positions to learn. So obviously he feels differently about it than you do. I'm so torn on what to do right now because of what you say about learning a solo first in one position makes sense. On the other hand, I feel like I should trust this very accomplished musician who is teaching me... What should I do???

Hi Justin, Thank you very much for this lesson! Are my fingers not supposed to touch any other string, besides the one I am playing, while I practice this? For example if the little finger is muting the A string when I play fret 5 on the E, is that something to avoid, or is that normal?
@pup1008
@pup1008 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think you can avoid it when you are starting off. Ideally you would not want your fingers touching other strings. Try to get on the tippy toes of your fingers. I went through a wonderful spell of actually having the lighter strings ping up under my fingernails! In more advance playing there will be times when you use fingers to mute redundant strings but I wouldn't worry about that now, just look to get a clean, crisp sound.

When you go back up (or down if we’re getting technical) do you do the exact same sequence? Or do you go back the way you came so to speak?
@theOriginalEamou
@theOriginalEamou 4 жыл бұрын
Almighty Bruce go back the way you came. The actual notes on the fretboard are not changing, and whether you are going up or down the major scale the notes are the same (just ‘backwards’ if you are going back down) so your fingers should be in exactly the same places, just in the reverse order! So on the way up you play: CDEFGABC On the way down you play: CBAGFEDC
