Oh good Lord! I am a firefighter in Indiana watermelon growing area. They are constantly moving hives around by the truck loads. I had no idea the killer bees were this far north. Idk how we would handle this? Call my hobby bee keeper friend and have him use thick foam on them? Maybe clear the area until it is dark and then have him foam them? Have the farmer use a cab tractor use a boom sprayer with a pesticide hover it over the hive? How do you get the bees out of the comb and vehicles? What do they spray around the honey that isn't toxic to eat? Oh the farmers are slowly switching to Mason bees here.

Africanized bees have not been reported in Indiana. They are mostly in Texas and parts of Arizona, New Mexico and southern California. There have been reports of them in Southern Florida as well.

I had my first encounter with Killer Bees in North Texas just outside Fort worth. I was taking pictures of a house when my kids alerted me to swarm that was forming rapidly. The bees where in a water meter box in the ground and just boiling out flying in their circles. I got in the car, apparently I parked right next to the hive, and got the hell out of there. No Stings! Huge win and hell no I'm not going back!

Is there anything that the general public should be aware of to avoid encounters with these or is it just something you have to hope you never deal with? This was the first time I’ve ever heard that they’ve entered into Canada as I thought it was too cold for them up here but I suppose some of the more temperate areas would work (I’m pretty surprised they’ve been found in Alberta). Our family is doing a road trip down to Texas in the spring so this is something I want to make sure we’re mindful of and wondered if there are precautions we should take to avoid setting off a random hive when we’re exploring. Thanks for the hard work you’re doing!

Yes, this happens everywhere now. I live in San Diego and worked at Sea World for years. I remember in the early 2000s every now and then when the music from our shows would start, it would trigger bees that had built a hive nearby no one knew was there. The bees would go into the stadium seating area and would start attacking people due to being disturbed by the music of the show. I've watched videos of bee keepers even back east, I think in the Midatlantic region who suddenly had to euthanize hyper-aggressive hives out of nowhere. Much respect to you guy and thanks for all you do.

I know this is an older video, but why don’t you try using soapy water in a spray bottle? Like the sprayer they use to spray weeds or even the ones that the exterminators use? It sprays a fine mist of soapy water and it works to kill them immediately. You can even salvage the wax from the nest that way because you’re not using poison. I know it wouldn’t work for spraying yourself, but it actually work really well and quickly.

Pro tip from an ex endurance athlete: ALWAYS have electrolyte sports drink. Heat exhaustion gets worse if you drink straight water, because it dilutes the precious few electrolytes you haven’t sweat out already.

You don't need expensive sports drinks, too damn expensive when you work outside in summer everyday, on real hot days a I can easily go through anything from 4-6 litres a day to keep your pee looking a healthy colour. A cheap way of doing it is to put a pinch of Lo-salt in your water - 50% sodium chloride, 50% potassium chloride so it keeps your sodium and potassium levels up. Also found your body actually retains the water rather than peeing it straight out which happens if you drink lots of plane water on a hot day. Doesn't taste the best when it's warm, but it's fine when it's ice cold.

That was awesome, I got stung at least sixty times tonight picking up my double-deep langstrom bee box in the rain here in Texas. It was absolute chaos, strong wind and rain knocked it over separating the two halves, the base and lids. I went over to it wearing just shorts with no t-shirt or veil to carefully reassemble the hive box back upright on the stand. Been bee-keeping for half a decade without PPE or smoke.

It just amazes me that there are still people whom don't realize just how huge and dangerous these colonies can be. I lived in the western Texas Desert for a few years and had run in's with 2 separate hives and was outside when a colony was migrating. I can't emphasize enough how different these bee's are than regular honey bee's as I was born and raise on the south eastern coast and this is a totally different ball game. To paint a picture of just how immense these colonies can be I'm gonna explain the circumstances of the migration event I witnessed. I was out feeding horses and I could slightly hear in the background a hum, and with that hum I could actually feel the air vibrating it was surreal. I had no idea what was going on initially till I glanced out across the desert landscape and there was a black cloud of bee's it was about at least 500 yards away and moving thank god the colony was moving away from where I was. You got to be out of your mind to mess with bee's like this. Venomous snakes don't bother me in the least but these bee's are a serious force of nature so much respect for you guys whom deal with these problems!
